Alicia was my fleet-footed serial killer in the first game*. She could sprint ahead and murder the entire back lines without a hitch while my slower shock troopers were left gasping in her dust. I think scouts accounted for about 80% of my kills and 100% of my murders.
*I mean, her ecstasy after each kill does not hint at mental stability.

I found it strangely progressive, in a way. Alicia was a fairly feminine, maternal woman with deep compassion, a cute crush and...a genocidal streak of annihilating dozens upon dozens of soldiers. It also, however, contributed to a sense of dubiousness in the cutscenes when Alicia would be all like "OMG I hate the thought of killing people, even enemy soldiers." Actually I think in my interpretation Alicia just pretended to give a damn about deeper issues around Welkin because she desperately wanted to get into his pants, all the while secretly harboring darker desires. It's sort of a gender-reversal of the traditional storyline where the guy pretends to not be a bloodthirsty killer in order to appeal to the cultured girl. In this case, Welkin's all sophisticated and pacifistic and searching for morality while Alicia's like "Yes, I agree, war is evil, I am everything you want in a woman, so sleep with me...and please ignore the downtrodden cries of the souls of my defeated foes as we make love." |
