So the other day I learned something that made me want to smack my brother upside the head. Apparently he says his new daughter "will never be allowed to play video games", despite the fact my nephews play them all the freakin time without any real limitation. Its simply because she's a girl and it was stupid my brain hurts. My sister-in-law plays video games herself. Heck OUR mother occasionally recounts the glory days of arcades (admittedly she never played consoles but my point remains)

Of course my immediate reaction was, and to his face, like hell she isn't. I'll give them to her myself.

They had her ears pierced when she was like 6 months old. Which I'm told is a thing now? Its not a big deal I'm just like, did you think maybe she wouldn't want earrings?

In any case she's growing up in a house with three older brothers. How "girly" do you really think she'll be?

If the brothers are allowed to play video games, then she should be allowed to choose for herself whether she wants to play too. Obviously, keep the games age-appropriate, but let her decide if that's a hobby she wants to participate in. Maybe she'll like it, maybe she'll decide they're not her thing. But it should be her decision.

That makes it sound worse. That should at least be something she gets when she decides on it.

But shit, raising a family isn't the Sims or the Chao Garden, and if your brother keeps taking that approach then he risks kids either rebelling against him later or finding themselves at a social disadvantage when the controlled environment they're raised in does not line up with the world outside, leaving them lost because all they know is the skewed domain of their childhood.

Saying "X child is going to have Y interests because I say so" is right next to Fundamentalist Christianity but without the religion to cherry pick out-of-context logic from.

Why does he not want girls to play videogames anyways? Is it just because "its not what expected of her gender" or did he dig up some weird phony research that says videogames makes girls crazy psycho or something?

Oh and yes, I agree with everyone else about the infant ear piercings. Giving them names or baptisms before they know who they are, fine. But doing things that screw with their body even in the slightest way is just, ugh.
