Making it happen.

Initial impressions:
-New megabeasts are hardcore. The Worldgen process kept going and going and going. I had to stop it in year 808 when I saw there were only 4000 people still alive, compared to the 7000 people a few hundred years prior. When I got to the Embark screen, I saw that the elves were extinct. Possibly the Goblins as well, but it's possible that Toady has simply chosen not to list the always-hostile races on the neighbor list anymore. I can't wait to actually fight one in Fort mode. -My Expedition Leader "likes Elk Demons for their terrifying features". ELK DEMONS. -There's still a lot of "YOU HAVE STRUCK MICROCLINE," but the game no longer pauses when you do, nor does it center it on the event.

Started up a new world in this, played around with Adventure Mode a bit, then went and started up a new fortress. Right away, I got a message telling me about a cave collapse. The game zoomed in on some random underground region and nothing happened, so I took note of where this was and went to check it out with a miner once I'd settled in.
Turns out there's a massive underground cavern on the right half of my site. It's got a tribe of six reptile folk. They're incredibly hostile, possibly because I put a hole in their roof. Also, this might be the first fortress of mine in a long time that actually collapsed. I'm running low on food due to a lack of fish, the farming is taking too long, and a naked mole dog just guzzled down almost all of what was left of my alcohol. |

Also note that the Mayday tileset is still incomplete, last I heard.
Most dwarves, if not all by now, have sprites, but you're out of luck on most creatures and/or monsters. Unless Mayday really put his work in. In that case, disregard this post. (I'm playing with the April 2nd version of the tileset. >__>)

According to his own site, v.31.01 has a bug with regards to graphic tilesets which prevents him from releasing a stable update. "Until that bug is fixed, if you're desperate, try looking for temporary solutions on the forums."
So probably any temporary release thus far is just porting the old tileset into the new format, but not yet updated with new creatures or such. Edit: d40? No idea where that came from. Version .31.

Well, it's good to see that one thing about DF hasn't changed: Rhesus Macaques

I'm having a problem in my Fort and I was wondering if anyone else had run into this; or knew what the heck changed. I've found several veins of Lignite; but it won't let me refine the Lignite into Coke at a Smelter (I've burned a few logs of wood to provide fuel).
Has anyone else experienced difficulty with Lignite in the new version? |

The bugtracker does not list that specific problem, far as I could tell.
May be worth filing that as a bug after you've confirmed that this is repeatable. Incidentally, version 0.31.02 is up. Some crash fixes and raw reshuffling.

Combat in this release seems to be a bit strange at the moment. I can aboslutely crush every part of a creature (including it's eye lids?) and it will still be alive. Creatures (both Dwarven and other wise) tend to live a long long time, more than they probably should in combat.
Plus Crossbow training and use still isn't exactly working. I quite like the caverns, but I have to use worldgen parameters to make them much flatter and not a spaghetti junction with a zillion Z level floors to effectively navigate. I found the bug that makes Dwarves melt in the rain hilarious.

I keep deleting my old worlds and making new ones with each new update.
This latest one, I decided to follow some advice from another person on the DF Forums. I took no picks or axes, but took plenty of copper nuggets and coal and kept my anvil so I could forge new ones on site. The problem? I forgot to bring stone to make the forge, furnace, and smelter out of, and evidently even if you tell your dwarves that they can use copper nuggets for building, they won't touch them at all. If I can hold out until fall I might be able to trade for blocks, but I doubt my dwarves will survive that long. Shame too, the site's got two rivers *and* a waterfall, and I was planning on building my dining room in front of the latter. EDIT: Found out the problem! The stone list has copper twice; Once as copper bars, and once as copper nuggets, and I was enabling the wrong one. Last edited by Roland; 04-18-2010 at 08:07 PM. |
