What bugs me is that they are practically the same thing. I don't want to have to buy a 3DS when I have a perfectly fine DS........but at this rate I'm going to have to.

While the exact nature of the fairy type doesn't seem to have been revealed yet regarding its interactions to the other types, there is one hint...

Based on the trailer, Gardevoir, now Psychic/Fairy was seen using Fairy Wind (Presumably a fairy move) on the Dark/Dragon Hydreigon and hitting for super effective damage.

So we can presume that fairy type is either super effective against Dark or Dragon, and not resisted by the other.
I personally think that fairy being super effective against dark is more likely, although given that the trailer also showed the fairy Slypheon attacking Haxorus with Moonburst, a confirmed fairy move, it's also possible that it's super effective against dragons as a meta-game remedy. (Although the scene between those two were cut before it could say "super effective" or not.)

Iwata confirmed during the Direct (and it's since been added to the site) that Fairy is effective vs Dragons. Other strengths and weaknesses are to be confirmed.

It's effective agenst ice too.

Also, a new trailer has appeared.

I note the 1-vs-4 battle there.

You're kidding me. Fairy is super effective against Ice too?

So much for hoping that Ice would get something they could defend against other than their own type.

I can envision them being weak to Steel what with the traditional fair folk weakness to 'Cold Iron' in mythology.
