Yeah... I mean, in FF8 a major plot point was that they all came from the same orphanage. The concept that one of them JUST MIGHT NOT BE AN ORPHAN is a spoiler in itself, though I guess that's out there anyway.

Where the heck does FF9 stand? I mean Zidane was made, not born. Same goes for Vivi. Legend of Legaia avoids this with the main character, but both characters that join you later suffer from it. Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross avoid this with...Well, nearly everyone in your party. Except that both Crono and Serge don't have fathers.
Star Ocean 3 appears to avoid this entirely by starting with a goddamn vacation with the protagonist, his love interest ( who may be his cousin. She refers to his parents as aunt and uncle ) and the protagonist's parents. Her parents are still alive, too, but they're somewhere else...Until all those parents die because Earth gets destroyed. Whoops. Last edited by Ryong; 10-23-2008 at 05:10 PM. |

I'm not sure the whole point about FF8 is valid. As for FF9, Zidane had an adopted father, the leader of his troop I believe. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure.

No, see, it totally is because Squall and co all came from the same orphanage and were raised by Edea. That added a bit of a personal note to their fight (until it turned out that it was Ultimecia all along, which I thought was stupid). The fact that Squall actually had a father - one who left him in pursuit of greater interests - sort of highlights the fact that most of Squall's attitude stems from abandonment issues (see also: Ellone, aka "Sis"). In addition, a lot of the game is also centered on Laguna's story... mostly to provide background information. The thing is, Laguna's characteristics sharply contrast to how we see Squall act, implying that Squall would have been a very different person if life had gone just a little better for him. He even says at one part that the person he is on the outside is just a mask to distance himself from people who might hurt him again.
And thus concludes today's story analysis of a game most people ignored because they didn't get the junction system.
