I don't do resolutions, either. However, there are a few things that I intend to start doing or do more of this year than I did last year.

For starters, I am going to start reading, research, and development of my thesis. This will probably have top priority.

I also want to do more creative writing. I have several short stories and novels that have lain dormant for a year or more, it's time to pull them out and have another look at them. Sadly, because I work and go to school for a combined total of around ~50 hours per week, and with the added amount of work that will go into my thesis, this will probably get put on the back burner again like it usually does. Doesn't stop me from wanting it, though.

If it's reasonably possible to do it given what's filling up the rest of your time, by all means, go for it, but if things go into a crunch, this is the one thing that you answer to no one but yourself for and can pick up and resume later.

These are all goals I've been working towards anyways, and New Years is a good time to remind myself of them, I guess.

1) Get a new job: 5 years in retail is long enough. Too long if, like me, you have no desire to climb the career ladder in that field, and are still working in the same peon job you started with. It's time to get out and into another job.

2) Go back to school: May or may not be tied to #1, but it needs to be done. I've put it off long enough. Rather I can score a grant, scholarship, or something other kind of financing, or bite the bullet and take out a student loan, it's time to get back into school. Sure, I probably need to figure out what I need to do with the rest of my life first, but I've been putting off going back to school for years...it's time to stop doing that.

3) Keep losing weight: Overall this year, I've lost weight. This is probably one of the few times I've accomplished this feat in my entire life. Now I just need to keep the scale going in the right direction. I've already cut back what I'm eating, and have recently started to exercise more. I just have to keep up what I'm doing.

4) Get back to writing: I've really sucked at writing this year. I even skipped National Novel Writing Month, something I've looked forward to the last few years. I've got all these ideas bouncing around my head, and I really should devote some of my free time to putting them down on paper. I'm not convinced I'm a good enough writer that I could get a book published, but it's a nice hobby to have other than video games, TV, and Internet forums.

5) Try to work into a normal sleep pattern: Really, staying away until 3-4 am and sleeping until noon can't be good. And if I'm working and going to school, it's probably not going to be in the cards, anyways. Might as well start to work myself into a more "normal" sleep pattern.

Like I said before, these aren't really New Year's Resolutions per se, as I've been working on them for awhile, but it's a good time to get recommitted to those goals.
