According to director Tetsuya Nomura, Noctis will not have the "Cloud-like" personality that people are currently expecting. Instead, he will be a type of character that has not yet been seen in the series, one which Nomura has wanted to try out for a long time. Nomura says that Noctis will have a strong and distinctive personality, and will absolutely not be a "silent, gloomy little boy."

Edit: For that matter, this entire project is Nomura's baby and he's been given a ton of freedom in it, or so it seems. It's had an incredibly long development time, but from the look of things, that's because they didn't put a time limit on it so he could crank it out to his own personal standards.

In a recent Dengeki interview, Nomura explained that Noctis isn't cool, but rather an ordinary young man who acts tough because he feels that it's his duty to protect his kingdom and its citizens. As a result, he sometimes acts rashly or overestimates his own strength.

So, from Red:
- sense of duty and pride
- hides his insecurities by acting toward his ideal of "cool"

from Zell:
- overconfident
- rash


Honestly, given those are two of my favorite characters, I think I'll like him well enough. If you watch the trailer, his voice parts sound pretty darn upbeat while all the action is going on while still retaining a bit of innocence to them and not getting into annoying territory.

At first when I heard that it will have a "Kingdom Hearts-like combat system" I was immensely disappointed. What I enjoy of Final Fantasy is how they remix and come up with new battle systems that I still enjoy.

But after watching that and going through some second opinions, I have decided that this looks cool and I'm alright with this. Totally hyped for it and this was the reason I bought a PS3.

Well, Cloud himself wasn't Emo, he just had mental problems (memory loss, secondary identity adoption, mind rape) but he actually was a kind of gung ho "I'm gonna do it!" who at the beginning of things, didn't have the actual ability to do so. Even when he's deluded and thinks he's a SOLDIER, he still has a very Go Get 'Em personality, and even after his whole mental trauma and his desire to kill Sephiroth, he's still the dude who goes on a date, plays dress up, rides the best g'damn chocobo in the world, and has a fairly kooky personality.

Advent Children, the director admitted retooling the character to the perceived "emo" of Cloud that most people had as a popular conception.

This new character seems interesting if that's how they're going, because we're going to get a guy who acts Squall/SOLDIER Cloud/Lightning, who is really closer to Tidus, he's just using that 'gloomy' persona to protect himself from others, and as a result is lonely.

We'll probably find out he has a bedroom full of Chocobo dolls, Esper figurines, and Final Fantasy Unlimited DVD's, and goes to bed wearing Mog pajamas, secluded deep in his home. And when he invites people over, he shows them a fake room lit by dim candlelight and bookshelf full of Nietzche and Machiavelli, with a teapot and a gloomy violinist.
