That's still kinda shitty, though, because I don't want to play a sequel to a game that works under the assumption that I lost during my playthrough.

It's like if they made a sequel to Super Mario Bros wherein Mario and Luigi fell into that big pit on World 8-2 and died, resulting in the eventual fall of the Mushroom Kingdom, the horrible deaths of every character in the franchise, and Bowser transforming into a hideous monster bent on annihilating all of existence, and now I have to play as some jackass I've never heard of as all of this is slowly revealed to me. Then, years later, Nintendo re-releases Super Mario Bros with new levels that tie the two games together and charges me ten bucks to play it on a phone.

Cross is a neat idea that could have been excellent if 1) they hadn't fucked over Trigger through plot implications, 2) they had cut the cast from infinity jillion down to the 8ish who have any plot relevance whatsoever, and 3) they had written better battle music.

Like, Cross supporters like to talk about how "oh you don't have to use the other ninety billion if you don't want to" but the fact is that each individual character acts as a development time vampire. They had people assigned to working out model assets, animation, game data, and dialog for a fiesty, middle-aged single mom, an animated voodoo doll, and a turnip. Every single one of the characters I mentioned could literally be taken out of the game entirely - like, scribbled over in each of their appearances in crayon - and NOTHING WOULD CHANGE.

Cross was a case of trying to do too much with too little preparation. A fresh remake/rethinking would have the potential to be excellent, especially if they manage to include the Chrono Trigger cast in a manner beyond "Oop, they died somehow."

I still don't get the anger over paying 10 bucks to play it on the iphone. It's that, or 40 bucks to play it on the DS.

Yeah, rereleasing something and charging more than you're willing to pay for it is really meh. There are about half a million other ways to play Chrono Trigger.

Aside from Partners in Time, Mario games don't have anything to do with time travel, which is the whole point of the thing.

I'm also wondering when was Lavos ever not a being of mass destruction.

I'm not saying Cross is perfect, nor have I ever done so, but your metaphor could use some work.

No, it works fine, because it's using an example of something else in a semi-related medium with comical changes to liken it to the real-world developmental process involved with the subject at hand. If you wanted me to compare it to something exactly like Chrono Cross, then an analogy wouldn't have been used so much as me just plainly stating that Cross is a pretty terrible sequel, which wouldn't have been as fun.

But if you liked fun, you wouldn't be defending Chrono Cross. DOHOHOHO!
