Space. The final frontier. These are the voyages of POS Industries. His continuing mission: To convince the lot of you to nerd it up with him in Star Trek Online for the low, low cost of absolutely fucking nothing!
On January 17, STO goes publicly free to play, with some notable limitations to those who haven't paid, of course. It mostly follows the same model as Champions Online, where you get some nice extras for having a regular subscription and many of the other goodies are available via microtransactions, but none of these restrictions really limits one's ability to progress through the game, though it does make it a bit more of a pain in the ass. Also, anyone who previously had a paid subscription can begin playing for free as of yesterday, which is what I have opted to do for the time being. I'm also in a longstanding, active fleet (read: guild) full of nice people who are always looking for new members and I've got invite privileges. We also have ventrillo if you want to turn off the crappily integrated Vivox voice chat that will be pumping ads in your ear constantly so long as you aren't a paid subscriber and fleets for both Federation and Klingon players. This is especially a plus as, at endgame, cross-faction teaming has been made available for the special task force missions (read: instances), which has really been a boon to the experience of playing Klingon-side. So, any interest here?
