[dStahl] This is where Romulan Republic captains have an advantage. Not only can they pilot their exclusive Warbird class ships with singularity cores, but they also gain the ability to command ships of their ally, much like Kira Nerys would command the Defiant while still wearing her Bajoran Militia uniform.

Romulans also gain access to the Fleet Ships of their chosen ally as well as any Romulan Republic only Fleet ships. They can also fly any limited edition lock box ship as well.

All that really means is if you want your fed or KDF character to also have access to Romulan ships, you'll probably want to re-make the character as a Romulan.

Too bad you'd lose any equipped ships that way. So time for them to sell more character slots to players!

So if you're starting a new character, what reason do you have to not make a Romulan, aside from purely RP purposes?

On the bright side, I get that they're doing everything they can to encourage Romulan players to make use of their unique "faction" features, so hopefully those efforts combined with obvious character slot limitations will result in less of an impact of the inevitable tidal wave of Romulans in rainbow Odysseys.

Also, one thing that did not escape notice was the mention that Romulans are going to have cloak bonus traits, which if nothing else will hopefully encourage more Romulan players to go KDF to maximize their usefulness. I'm also curious to see what alternatives the Remans get, as I'm strongly considering making one of those, since one of the most surprising things Cryptic got right with this game was managing to salvage that entire species into an actually engaging and compelling people after the trainwreck that was Nemesis.

Speaking of the Remans, I just noticed this:

[dStahl] All accounts will have the ability to unlock the Reman species, which is an exclusive species to the Romulan Republic, in one of two ways: they can either purchase the species unlock, or they can earn it by achieving maximum tier in the Romulan Reputation with a captain of any faction. A FED or KDF captain that has already achieved max tier in the reputation has already unlocked the Reman species and it will be available for them when they go to create a new Romulan character after May 21.

Soooooooooooooo I guess I need to get that last Romulan rep tier knocked out.
