$499 doesn't seem all that steep. It's a mediocre [hardware specs] but fairly future-proofed gaming device and all kinds of useful media jazz too. Well, unless you have to buy like four of them because your warranty juuuuust ran out and hey what's that ring mean-

To be fair when the red ring of death became common the warranty for the 360 was extended to like, 5 years so those that got it also got replacements.
