Wow, so much great stuff here. I haven't looked in far too long.

I've just finished the draft of a little something, but I'd like to get advice on it.

It started with the current Avvy, seeing it had a shopping theme.

To give some context, I uneccesarily complicate everything I do. As such I have multiple versions of Arhra running around for reasons of paradox and one ended up as a (reluctant) demonic minion to Rhiya.

Rhiya and I were joking about Rhiya taking Arhra III on a shopping trip to get more minion clothes and it demanded to be drawn. It's probably had the most groundwork out of anything I've done.

First the pose test:

I went to the trouble of doing some rough (already out of date) character sketches to get an idea of looks. Since Arhra III is a demonic minion, I needed something that looked miniony.

Eventually I settled on far too many belts. It seems to emphasise the chestal region an awful lot though...

On the plus side, I finally worked out how that crazy hair actually looks from the side:

The trial with short hair didn't work so well. I need to learn to draw hair better.

Anyway, all this led me to a first draft:

I'm planning to do a final version on good paper. I was just wanting to ask some advice on fixing a few details with this one. The perspective's a bit wonky and I feel the poses are a little stiff.

Going through this process was also making me wonder how much preparation do people generally do for their sketches and art?

Doc Ock- I reaallly like the one on the second picture of the guy crouching. It looks really nice.

Arhra - That's a cool sketch, and it's interesting to see how someone else does the preparation for a picture.

For myself, my process is never solid and just moves with whatever I think it needs.

Generally, for well-planned-out pictures, I start with a tiny thumbnail sketch(I <3 thumbnail sketches), that is super tiny, and generally only I can interpret them. xD
Then I go and draw a bigger pencil sketch (starting with the guidelines to make the human figure and going from there)
Then, if I'm going to do it on the computer, I scan it, redo the lineart and color it. (if I do it traditionally, I ink the lines and then color with whatever medium I'm using)

Other times, I just draw a basic gist of what I want the picture to look like, and just do it, making changes and in general making up the picture as I go.

And then sometimes, I just pick up my pencil/pick a brush in photoshop that I think is cool and just draw and see what happens.

(this is as far as my own sketches for fun, the bigger projects, like for school are a completely different matter, especially if professors specify how they want it done.)

I've been drawing faces! It's all a part of my new "Draw better!" strategy.

Arhra, I really like your people, especially the one on the right, with all the buckles. She looks like... rogue. Rogues are cool.

EDIT:

This is my pirate pimp (or pimp pirate, whichever floats your boat). Inspired by Ne-Yo's one part in that one song by Keri Hilson, wherein he states, "I used to commander-in-chief on my pimp ship flying high." I wondered what a pimp ship would look like. Given my steampunkish leanings, I thought it would look like an airship painted pink, with sparkly bits and a big ol' booty on the prow. Then I wondered... who would captain such a marvelous piece of machinery? So here he is.

Default Alternate Art

I've decided to try drawing alternate art for things as they show up on the main page, particularity pertaining to that new webcomic that is going to happen. Since we haven't images for that yet, I've made an alternate poster-ma-thing for the thing that the Zack is doing.

My typography needs work (I.E., isn't typography) - any other comments?

Sometimes when I am bored, I do horrible things.

I am done wrecking your sketches thread, you may go back to actual artists now.

(Fun fact: The eyes were originally level, and the mouth was centered. This actually looks much better this way, trust me.)

TopHat- Very nice pirate pimp guy. Eyepatches and giant pink clock necklaces are always a win. And what is that on his peg leg?

Skweeb- I tried that alchemy a bit but I never could get used to it. XD I like what you do with it though.

Mike- that's... scary. But I'm sure you know that. XD

My character from the D&D campaign I've joined this summer. Her name is Tari Alcarin, and she hunts humans. Bwah hah hah. Also yay for me actually trying to draw scenes and such instead of just someone floating on top of a background.

EDIT: Sorry Bobusdoleus! I forgot to comment on yours! I must have skipped past it somehow. D= I really love the coloring on it. Very cool usage of no-lines. The purple writing is a little hard to read on the smaller one, so I don't know if that's an issue, but it still looks good!

Wow, guys. Really wish I had your talent. I have a WIP in a more difficult pose, but I figured I'd go for the cuteness. Behold! Chibis!

Again, I hate my scanner. This is actually at 50%, but it decided to kick into black and white, which I probably did with my hand-drawn comic, but that's admitting fault on my part. XD

Oh Blue...Cool! Thats how i used to draw Three years ago. (i am not joking) just keep at it. Look at tutorials. And since you actualy started down the wrong path like me(according to a lot of artists its better to go from Life to cartoon then visa versa) don't expect to hit god like skill level anytime before 5 years.
Also having skill in something just makes the artiest block 20 times more frustrating.
edit- Here is a sight that has a lot of how to draw things Idrawgirls usefull tips here...but doesnt really fit my style...although im trying to use it to help me with girl faces
Edit 2: also try to do something that your comfortable with. See for me i havent found it yet. but for some artiest their style comes with how they draw. So Look around but dont always copy. Try to make YOUR OWN copy.

This. General rule of thumb is learn the rules before bending the rules.
