Default How obscure is your taste in music?

I don't know about everybody else, but once I hit about 20, I started developing a taste for unusual and obscure musicians. Right now I'm listening to Curtis Eller, New York's angriest yodelling banjo player. Seriously, I am diggin' this stuff. I demand new music by artists I have never heard of. Also I guess you can discuss that sort of thing here, if you really want to.

I like "The New Porographers," "Bedouin + Soundclash," "Deathcab for Cutie," and a lot of the stuff in Baz Luhrman's movies. It was because of Romeo + Juliet that I was introduced to Des'Ree

Well, what do you consider obscure? If I showed my iPod library to a random person on the street I'd get a few blank looks, but somebody who reads Pitchfork probably wouldn't find anything too 'obscure' in there. Of course, I tend to like artists with a lot of production (Broken Social Scene, Sigur Ros, Dan Deacon, etc.), so I generally don't find myself scrounging around dive bars or what-have-you for the newest, I dunno, yodeling banjo player.

Also, it's New Pornographers. I'm normally not a big spelling nazi, but they're like my third-favorite Canadian super group.

I listen to old Cirque du Soliel soundtracks, namely Varekai!, Drallion, and Alegria. It has a really unique sound. Each album has a very different feel to it.

ArlanKels will become famous soon enough. Eventually. Maybe.

And here I thought listening to STYX was obscure. then I read this thread and all I saw were weird names of weird bands I've never heard of and probably never will.

Probably the most obscure thing I Actually listen to would be the variety of European trance/dance/electronica that I can manage to find/locate/hear.

But then, that wouldn't be obscure in Europe...evil Europe...

I don't know about music, but I have an obscure taste in pornography. Clowns and midgets underwater, zah? o_O;

One soundtrack I will never get tired of is Les Miserables. You only love the music from that production more and more as time goes on.

Fairly obscure. I listen to a fair amount of prog. My favorite bands have pretty big followings but tend to be ignored by the mainstream (Radiohead and Dream Theater are good examples of this).

I listen to some popular bands too, like Metallica, Led Zeppelin, GNR, and some more classic rock stuff. Some of that is some of my favorite music. Though I do enjoy contemporary stuff, like Tool, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters.

I have a bit of indie too, but mostly the stuff that's either the upper crust of indie popularity or actually broken into the mainstream, like Spoon and Flaming Lips.

I keep a few Finnish metal bands just to confuse people, though. Sonata Arctica and Children of Bodom, woo! But if I really wanna mess with friends, Buckethead or Opeth are usually sufficient.

The name of the Banjo player is Curtis Eller.

Discoveries since I have made this post:

Erich von Kneip - Jazz with an old feel to it. Did a nice cover of Blue Skies.
DeVotchKa - Mariachi Rock. Sounds like something that should have been in Kill Bill.
Luminescent Orchestrii - I dunno, they list themselves as Folk / Punk / Classical, and it has a gypsy twist.
Surfadelica - Well, the name should be enough.

I really want to add a solid Rock n Roll band here to round it out but everything I've found in that vein has been either too screamy or too emo. Anyone with suggestions?

I listen to the Radio. Even outside of a car.

Given that it's the age of iPods and iTunes, that's pretty damn obscure.

Is it sad that I know and heard of each band listed in this topic so far?

Now to add my particular zest to the stew:
Neuroticfish
Gothic Archies (they did a rather hard to obtain album made specifically for A Series of Tragic Events, a most excellent listen)
Prefuse 73
Dimitri From Paris
Stromkern
Fingathing

To name a few..
