Default Where's my Goddamn gigabytes?!

So my C: partition is ostensibly 149GB, with 18GB free. However when I scan it, it says there's only 110GB actually taken up by files and such. So where the goddamn hell do those 20 extra GB go?

Check to see if you have any hidden files, as they do not show up when you do scans and the like, making it look like you "Lost" HDD space. That sounds like what is happening there.

Find Space Monger. Use Space Monger. Enjoy a graphical representation of your files according to relative size.

It might be the result of a bug in the Litter Bin. Sometimes when you send files to be deleted there, they disappear but still use HD space. I think this happens when you send two or more files to the Bin, with one of them being too big to be stored(Default size tends to be 10% of the HD total) and the system asks you if you want to delete it immediately. The big one is erased, but the small ones disappear.

No idea on how to reverse it though.

Default swap partitions are fun

Also check where your Windows page file is being stored. On the drive(s) that has/have one, viewing the drive properties will report X amount of used space whereas calculating the space used of all folders and subfolders starting at the root of the drive will show a smaller value [i.e. not include the page file].

This post assumed use of Windows; ignore if that is not the case.

Yes, that Space Monger.

Good point, Zicquall. The recycle bin may well be taking up some of that.

I'd doubt that the paging file is taking up 20 GB, but it could quite easily be taking up 2+. Just remember to make sure that hidden files and folders are visible.

Depending on what you mean by "scan," you might benefit from a defrag to free up all that "ghost data."

Go to Start, search for "cmd," run it as an administrator, and type in the following line:
Code:
defrag.exe c: -w -f -v
-w gives you full defragmentation (otherwise fragments larger than 64MB are left alone), -f forces it to defragment when drive space is low (you probably don't need it, but it don't hurt), and -v gives you verbose mode for frankly much better information.

Wouldn't hurt to run chkdsk on the drive. Open a command prompt at type in "chkdsk /?" for a list of the switches. As it's your primary partition, when you scan it will encounter an error because it's in use. It will prompt you if you want to schedule a boot time scan.

Also, see if there are any other diagnostic tools available for your harddrive here.
