A group of people in Vermont are saying that they want to secede from the Union because Bush won the election. Do you think the Kerry states will follow them and create a new country? Or Do you think Bush will go to war if they do to try to keep them?

I have heard of this, as well.
But, you see, it's a very very small amount of the population which wishes to secede, or at least I assume it is. Generally, my point is that it probably won't happen.

Of course it won't, however, we'd gladly accept you with open arms! Hell, Florida is already almost the 13th province, a quarter of Canadians are down there each winter anyway!
![]() But in all seriousness, I highly doubt that there would be a movement large enough to make even one state secede from the Union. After all, He'll be gone in four years. If Americans really don't want to deal with him for the next four years, they can move to Canada, and move back for the next Election.

This would be a failure of democracy. In a democracy, one side legitimately wins and one sides legitimately loses, but the losing side rarely tries to secede. This happens around the world, and it has been happening for hundreds of years. To run off, pout then quit because your side lost is not a logical reaction nor is it conducive to democracy. It’s what spoiled children do in the playground when they lose at four-square.
It won't happen. To ask if America will go to war with Vermont(!) is a huge jump of the gun. It's like asking if the Earth will go to war with Mars if we find life there.

But think about if it did happen and all the states that voted for Kerry seceded. would you join them or stay and deal with it or go to another country for four years?

Yeah. And what if the sun exploded? What would we do then?
That would be the greatest tragedy in the history of democracy. The people of this country have too much sense to do that. The topic is so ridiculous I'm not going to discuss it anymore.

I find this thread very insulting, not only because I'm from Vermont, but also because everyone here posting seems totally clueless about any particulars about anything.
First of all, there have *ALWAYS* been Vermonters who want to secede (Link). It isn't new, and while Frank's book is fairly humorous, I took a course with him at UVM (University of Vermont) and he does at least make a case for it based on historical facts. Like the simple fact that Vermont wasn't part of the Union until after the Revolutionary War, and prior to that VT was a bit of contested land both New York & New Hampshire laid claim too, but its residents would have none of it. Anyway back to the thread... As for the actual town meeting(s) from what I've heard, they were basically a method of blowing off steam. As shocking as it might sound, people in Vermont don't actually like Bush. The meetings discussed how much Bush related dictates we'd be willing to put up with, and basically talking hypothetically about what would be our breaking point. Its called freedom of speech, a concept you might want to look into. SWK Pfft, Flatlanders.

Oh, calm down, SWK. No one here was taking it seriously, it was all just hypatheical(majorsp).
Besides, it's not a unique idea for a state or whatever to try to secede. IIRC, Quebec has often sought it's independence from the rest of Canada, but that is usually defeated by the voters. Quote:
