It was the most daring theft ever conceived. The theft of the most advanced light cruiser the Terran Federation ever created. The raw power of a warship condenced into a highly manuverable cruiser. Its main weapon the Plasm Excellerator Canon, when fully sharged, is capable of destroying most known ships with a single well placed shot. Its hull is plated with three blades of dicosium metal and its element 173 warhead missles carry the explosive power of .7 gigatons. While its dicosium tipped grappler arms can crush solid stone.

Obviously with such a powerful warship, they have made many enemies. Particularly the Federation, which would rather see the ship in pieces then in outlaw hands. While others wish to claim the vessel as their own. On the run the crew takes the ship outside of known space into the unexplored expance.

Setting
It is the distant future and thanks to the Inertial Nullification Drive faster then light travel has become a reality. Thanks to these and the Velocity Relays humans have traveled to, and colonized many worlds, as well as met other species, most of which joined the Terran Federation. Since then expantion has drastically slowed as political and military forces are concerned about endangering their protective sphere of influence. Not wishing to spread themselves to thin, or run the risk of encountering hostile aliens, no official bodies venture out into the expanse.

Technology
Guns: Although personal energy based weapons do exist, those with the resources often prefer the more old fashion ballistic weapons in the same way missles are prefered over ship-based beam weapons. The pierching and destructive power of a single round is enough to blow a six inch wide hole out of the targets body.

Plasm Excellerator Canon or PEC: Most large and many mid-sized warships have a centrally mounted PEC. It functions by concentrating a large amount of high energy plasma and firing it in a tightly focused beam. Although the weapon cannot pivot and has a high recharge time, its pure destructive power keeps it as the main weapon of any ship lucky enough to have it.

Dicosium: A very strong metal, so dense it is nearly impossible to produce and use in anything but a zero gravity enviroment. For these reasons even the best ships are merely plated with this material, however it is so durable even an inch thick plate is many times better then a foot of steel.

Element 173: A still unnamed nuclear isotope formed when elements 127 and 154 fuse and with a half-life measured in nanoseconds, it quickly breaks down when formed. This fusion followed almost immediately by rapid fission has resulted in the deadliest explosive ever created. Combined with the lack of residual radiation made its use in military weapons an obvious choice.

Inertial Nullification Drive: The IND functions by negating the mass and inertia oh the ship, thus allowing the ship to move under pure kenetic energy. Thanks to this the lightspeed barrier no longer exists. Any ship made in the past 20 years within the federation has this drive. As do most made in the past 50 years

Velocity Relays: These were constructed long before the IND became common place. Consisting of an acceleration and decceleration gate, the first gate generates a small wormhole that increases the speed of a ship ten fold, while the other ships this away allowing the ship to continue travelling normally. Although originally designed to be the method of faster then light travel, its ability to make even ships propelled by a IND move several times faster has made it a wonderful device of convience. Unfortunately few of these exist within the expanse.

Communication: Through smaller and simpler versions of the relays real time communication is possible throughout Terran space, and even in parts of the expanse. Handheld communication and ship-to-ship versions of these also exist, but require line of sight, or for the two parties to be within a light second of one another.

Energy Shields: These shields are self regenerating as long as a continual power supply is available and will block most weapons. However a fully charged PEC would easily overwhelm energy shields. The ships own energy weapons can fire through these shields but solid matter cannot. One sized for personal use still does not exist

Plasma Shields: These shields are made out of raw plasma and although stronger then energy shields they do not allow any energy to pass through including communications and the ships own energy weapons. These shields are also more energy consuming, but ideal if a total defence is needed. Especially since it will dampen even a PEC blast.

Cybernetics/Splicing: Both are available and give some obvious advantages. However their maintance and inherant medical complications have kept them from becoming common place. In addition many Terrans look down upon those with such modifications.

Each position automatically implies that your character has certain skills, so keep that in mind when making the character. Captain position is also more simular to an elected official then defacto leader. So if the others think someone else can do a better job dont be suprised if your demoted (and possible killed)

Navigator: Petey Speritz (Garud)
Scientist: (you know what all that cosmic mojo is all about)
Diplomat: Dan Wells (Gorefiend)

Others can be added with approval but I'd like to get a few of these filled out. Oh and at the start of the game, the person that gets captain position gets to name another player first mate.

The Excelsior
Weapons
1x PEC, 5 minute full charge with a 1 minute minimum for firing
2x Dicosium tipped grappler arms
8x Beam turrets, giving 360 by 360 degree weapon coverage (if directly facing a target, up to 6 can be fired at it)
8x Element 173 missles
64x interceptor missles (to avoid confusion, missles meant to shoot down other missles)
128x microfusion missles

Propulsion
The ships IND is able to reach a maximum speed of .8 LPH (light-year per hour) making it the fastest ship of its size.

The Excelsior is powered by a high energy plasma mined directly from the corona of stars. Although this fuel source is increadibly common in the Terran Federation its availablity within the expanse is unknown and most likely varies.

Modifications:

Bionic Eye: Custom build bionic eye that allows him to interpret the best course for reaching point B under many different conditions, and allows him to do it under speed.

Weapons:

Stun Gun - A special plasmatic device that sends the victim into shock. The shock itself is harmless if hit only a few times. Despite that though, it is only meant for incapacitating. Unloading a round of Stun Gun Plasma ammo into a single target within 3 minutes will kill the target (thats 12 shots).
Eye-targeting beam - Temporarily blinds a foe with a bright flash. Runs on batteries. Repeated use on an enemy can cause blindness.
Oxygen Vacuum - A gun that filters the air in front of it to make the target/s have trouble breathing or suffocate. The oxygen comes out the other side, so the user is not inhibited by lack of air.

Bio: Petey was born on Earth, as a part of the slums. He was homeless from birth, and his parents were petty criminals. It was the only way they could get by.
The city he lived in was Sydney, which had fallen into complete disrepair after the 3rd world war. A commonplace method for making money was the selling of materials to buyers who needed them from one reason to another. Petey was no exception, and was one of the best natural scavengers the poor city had. However, while the junk selling was commonplace, it was not as profitable as stealing, and when the junk started to run out, he resorted to it to survive. In the slums there was a strict code of honor. Don't steal from the poor. However, passers by were fair game, and soon, Petey was selling Rolex watches to pawn shops, and jewelery to jewelers (why anyone would take expensive items such as that into the slums, I haven't a clue.) Petey only ever took enough to survive though, not enough to get by for the long term.
At the age of 14, Petey's parents both died. Stabbed to death by a person who stole off their target before they had a chance. Petey, while distraught, saw this as an opportunity, and left the slums. He traveled to Parramatta City, which had become a bustling port town. He then stowed away on a cruise ship, and left the port town.
He spent two days on that ship, stealing food and hiding away. However, he was caught by cabin crew. This led him to meeting the captain of the ship, who turned out to be quite a merciful fellow. The Captain forgave him and let Petey stay on the ship, almost adopting him. Petey learned about navigation, namely star maps, as the captain went from port city to port city. Each new place bringing new knowledge and new experiences, from all over the world. After two years of traveling, the captain left the cruise company to pilot a rich merchants ship, and took Petey with him. Petey was an official member of the merchant's crew, instead of a stowaway this time around. The trips that he had took him all over. As he started to chart courses for places, he developed a knack for it. Star charts were understood very easily to him.
One day, when Petey was 24, the merchant ship encountered space bandits. These bandits raided the ship, taking him prisoner, and killing all other crew members. Petey was kept on the ship, until he escaped. He stole a single-seater space fighter pod that the bandits themselves had stolen from the Republic. After they learned what he had done, they gave chase through an asteroid belt, but Petey's little ship and superior navigational skills allowed him to escape re-capture.
After docking at a Terran merchant planet, he was enlisted to transport cargo by a large merchant company. He piloted and navigated the cargo ship, transporting all kinds of material. Supplies, weapons, ammunition, missiles, waste, food, clothing, minerals. He transported it all. His pay was quite decent and he was able to travel to the furthest reaches of the universe. Not only that, he got to meet all kinds of people, and he turned out to be quite the player among the ladies. They didnt seem to mind the bionic eye that the merchant had granted him, especially considering you wouldnt be able to tell the difference. He did this for 10 years, before the Federation found out about the merchant's shady deals. Upon arriving back at the merchants home planet of Iralex, officials attempted to arrest him for association with the merchant. However, Petey escaped capture once again, and was pursued for 6 months by the Federation. But the ship Petey escaped on was starting to wear down, and repairs were getting harder and harder. The condition of his ship was getting worse and worse, which made for far more closer calls with chases. He always managed to escape, but at this point, he was running low on money, and the cargo ship he was piloting was not going to hold up much longer.
One last ride with the ship, he travelled to meet a group of people, some, if not all, on the run from the federation. Needing a ship, and liking the idea, he decided he needed to treat himself. The Excelsior was the perfect ship. If only he could get his hands on flying it...

MODIFICATIONS: His right eye has been replaced with a robotic one, which allows him to see in infrared and measure distances with high accuracy. The bones in his arms have been reinforced with titanium to prevent injuries from the high recoil of his weapons.
WEAPONRY: A pistol and sniper rifle, both modified to carry special .60 rounds, with an AP tungsten tip and a white-hot uranium core. The sniper rifle is very accurate and can hit up to 1.5 miles away. It carries 6 rounds per clip. The pistol is a revolver which can only hold four rounds and has to be held with both hands because of the high recoil, but it has a lot of stopping power.
BIO: George joined the Terran Marines at the age of 16, and spent eight years in the service. He was dishonorably discharged when he left his commander to die after a failed operation because he thought his retrieval pod would fly faster without the extra weight. His commander survived and reported him; He was lucky to avoid execution. After his discharge, George became a mercenary. His first three years were uneventful, but then he was hired to help steal a certain ship...

weapons are like this, they have guns, nasty futuristic guns that fire bullets that can easily remove limbs, but still ultimately guns.

as a FYI, you dont have to be 'bad guys' or anti-heros, or anything. You could have stolen the ship because you need it to help fight oppression, or because you think it will help you find treasure in the expanse, or just because you like making things explode.

First things first -

(1) Are these 'other species' playable options, and if yes then (2) do you have a set list of such species, and if no (3) are we allowed to create an alien race? I'm thinking something ammonia-based from a gas giant, with a nice pressurized living suit.

Also, do we have a common backstory for how we ended up on the ship/associated with the crew? I'm guessing that stealing a ship like this isn't something you hastily throw together with a bunch of random people, but it is like Ocean's 11 where we're all part of the same undersociety and brought together by a common acquaintance, or more like Firefly where we've been a crew for a goodish amount of time before the heist?

Also also, did you forget to put in pilot, or is that folded in under navigator? I figure piloting is more for the short term and navigation is the long view/planning, but I wanted to make sure. Also, dibs on the (maybe) pilot position.

in order, yes, no, and yes though you should be aware you wouldn't be all that hard to kill. If your fine with that, I'm fine with such a life form, just warning you. Everyone can have their own reasons but everyone should also go into this with the understanding that everyones goals will be met, or they are lying and plan to do some starscream inspired usurption. Though I'd suggest you talk with other PCs to come up with a commonality. Expecting a few small groups to join forces is alot more reasonable then many individuals. Pilot is navigator. I considered seperating them but I realized while actually flying the navigator wont do much, but while plotting things out the pilot would have much. I merged them so that character would always have something to do. I'd also like to throw this out as an optional position, a tradesman/diplomat/linguist something like that would probably come in handy. I didn't put it down since it didn't seem like a must have

As in, I shouldn't expect to be harder to kill than a human? Or that I'll be easier to kill than a human? I figured the suit would merely be a way for his species to interact outside the intense pressure of his home planet, not a weakness/strength.

Why? An entire crew of cartoonishly evil characters is kind of dull, and if you're the lone 'evil' character on a ship of mostly ambivalent people...

Speaking of which, what show/combination of shows will this be like? Firefly, where we go from planet to planet just to avoid getting caught? Star Trek, where the emphasis is more on actually exploring and interacting with new planet locals? Are we going to be taking the fight to the Federation?

Anyways, since pilot isn't available, I'll be the Engineer, possibly one of the original designers of the ship/insideman for the original heist. I'll get my profile up Monday-ish, after exams.
