Default Is it just me, or does literature suck?

So, I ve been doing Lit. studies in school, we read Flowers for Algernon, To Kill a Mockingbird, Great Expectations, Old Man and the Sea, and one thing I noticed about of of these: They all suck!

Who else here thinks that the stuff considered literature is just overated garbage?

Well, some of it is overrated garbage; this goes without saying, really. But the dual lists of "Crap" and "Literature" are naturally going to differ from person to person. for instance, I actually rather liked To Kill A Mockingbird; but I couldn't fucking stand The Old Man and the Sea.

Yeah, Flowers for Algernon was great. I don't know what your trouble is.

The Old Man and the Sea, while a bit of a... tedious... read, is actually a really good read if you can get into it. It's an example of the writing style of days gone by, and poetic use of metaphor for an entire book, which was a metaphor within another metaphor.

Edit: Well that's three of the books on your list being defended, who's going to rescue "Great Expectations" Which I never read? XD

Having never read any of those, I can't make an opinion. I have, however, read my fair share of crap. I don't remember titles as I was to busy clawing my eyes out to read them.

Mockingbird I didnt hate, but I though it wasnt nearly as good as anyone said. I swear though, if someone tries to defends Great Expectations, I will leave this forum for 5 minutes. That is the most pretentious, boring, drawn out piece of trash I have ever read.

Lot novels studied in English classes are read because they have some "meaning". That's usually the reason my teachers have given me at least. Though, you'd think it wouldn't kill the authors to write something interesting to display that meaning.

Not that they're all bad, To Kill a Mockingbird was imo, good.

I liked To Kill a Mockingbird(read it on my own after enjoying the movie) and Flowers for Algernon(read it back in primary school). Haven't read the others. As for the books I read in English Lit, the only one I hated was A Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood though The Chosen by Chaim Potok I really enjoyed, can't remember the other 2.

And is this all about books? Or do poetry and plays count too?

Eh, just finishing my freshman year in high school, my english teacher had us read Slaughterhouse Five. Along with a few other books I had never heard of.

Basically, he's the best English teacher ever. Just gotta find the right stuff.
