Default ...Y'ever Wonder How Much Memory You Take Up?

Recently, I nearly wiped my family computer's hard drive. Unintentionally. But it was because of this that my mum bade me get my own hard drive so that she could keep all her stuff safe. I chose the Trekstor 320 GB drive at Future Shop.

Now, all I had on the computer was RaiRO, Portal, some music and movies. Maybe a few Word documents in there, too. So I put everything I had on the hard drive, and then deleted it all from the family computer. Then I deleted the excess programs from the computer, like old game save files, incomplete torrents, stuff like that. I wound up freeing about 18.5 GB of stuff from the computer.

...I found that amazing. It made me think "How much memory do others take up on their computers?" So... how much memory are you guys taking up?

717.6 GB out of 1061 GB.

I'm a bit of a pack rat.

For the record, memory can also refer to RAM. Idling right now I'm taking up 1163 MB out of my effective 3939 MB of RAM (Including the swap file).

you guys make me cry.

I had a 20 GB HD for a looooong time. And I got by with it too! And I still use my 56k modem!

It's sad but it's true, I'm an ol' granny.

Damn, I'm only at 600gb give or take a few. I blew out a 120gb so I'm starting to run low on space.

wow. 70% of a 1TB hard drive!? wow.
4GB of RAM!? I want your computer.

For me, adding up hard drive totals, 204GB of 223GB.

Not including internet storage or school servers.

As for RAM, 360MB of 512MB. Minimum, apart from partition recovery monitor. Idk why, but my guess is paging file. I will have to reset that.

Heh, there's no way I'd have 4 GB of actual RAM; Windows XP can't deal with more than 3, due to the need for a graphics card. I have 2GB DDR2 800 RAM, and a 2 GB swap file on my hard drive.

And the 1 TB is over 3 hard drives :p

Also, don't reset the paging file! It's important, and beneficial. All it costs you is some hard drive space.

Not exactly resetting it. Just risking some performance for some RAM.

And man, I WISH I HAD YER COMPUTER

Spent a pretty penny on it. Very much worth it.

...you won't gain any performance by tossing page space. Seriously. Just leave it be.

To clarify: You probably could have managed without a paging file ~3 years ago on 512 MB of RAM. The paging file will effectively increase the amount of RAM you have, enabling you to run more recent programs. I'd recommend having a 768 MB paging file for your setup. Removing the paging file is only really effective if you have a *lot* of RAM, or everything you run is old/small.

87.7 out of 149 gigs of HD space (probably time to do some disk cleaning), and roughly 600mb out of 1.5gigs of ram.
