Serious America Jr. follows in U.S's fat footsetps.

How do you Canadians feel about being far fatter than most rich countries of the world?

Quote:
Canadians are far fatter than most compatriots in 32 other rich, industrialized countries, a comprehensive study reports Thursday.

On the plus side, we haven’t been getting that much worse.

And comprehensive prevention programs to fight obesity could save up to 40,000 lives in Canada a year, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says.

“A common assumption is that individuals are in the best position to judge their own welfare,” the OECD says. But that doesn’t always work when people don’t realize the effect of what they eat.

Nor are only individuals at fault, the OECD says. Government subsidies for agriculture, transportation policies, and taxation on lifestyle goods play a role.

The OECD launched its campaign in 2007 because of the economic cost of obesity to rich countries, ironically parts of the world where public-health programs and readily available food have solved deadly problems of malnutrition and food and water-borne diseases.

.....

Canada’s seat at the “Fit not Fat” table will be as the joint fifth-worst of 33 countries, an improvement over 15 years ago. We’re tied with Iceland and Chile for overweight people, right behind the U.K., Australia and Ireland. Only Mexico, the U.S., New Zealand, the U.K. and Australia have more obese people.

Among the key OECD findings:

• The obesity rate in Canada is projected to climb by 5 per cent in the next 10 years.

• Two out of three men in Canada are overweight and one in four people are obese.

• Canadian women with poor education are almost twice as likely to be overweight. With men, education isn’t a factor.

......

Obesity rates are highest in the United States and Mexico and lowest in Japan and Korea among OECD countries.

Canada’s rate has risen more slowly than some other countries: The U.S., England and Australia have piled on the pounds dramatically since 1990. Even Korea’s relatively low rate has shot to above 30 per cent.
Welcome to the fat kids' table my chunky northern cousins. If you're good maybe I'll share with you our secret recipie for Snickers bar wrapped in bacon, shoved in a twinkie, deep fried, and rolled in powdered sugar......on a stick.

I'll take that recipe but only if I get the peanut butter-chocolate-strawberry-caramel dipping sauce with it.

Crippling taxes on stupid unhealthy food would be pretty cool I think. I for sure look at the price tag before anything else in my food. If you really need to have the personal freedom to slam a deep-fried bag of potato chips per day, you'd better be rich. Because then people will call you eccentric instead of, you know.

Except for the people who eat fast food the most do it because they either don't have the time to cook a good, healthy meal, or they don't have the money to. I don't know how it is up in Canadaland, but in the United States, healthy food is significantly more expensive than fast food. You can't easily feed a whole family for $20 when you buy food at the grocery store, but at a fast food place? It is easy.

All significantly taxing fast food will do is hurt the people who are already hurting the most for money, which is not a good idea. The government shouldn't do things like that to people, it isn't their job to tell us how to live our lives, regardless of what country it is.

Taxing unhealthy food would pretty much decimate the student population.I'm just saying.

Over here, $20 at a grocery store will buy you several kilos of potatoes and onions, a recommended 1/2 liter daily dose of milk for four or more people and maybe even a piece of meat too. Whereas at a fast food place you'll get a maximum of three hamburger meals, or two and a half pizzas.

It must be weird to have that the other way around. >_>

It's easy to eat healthily on a budget if you're an adult with a normal full time job. If you're a lower class family and you're working multiple jobs it's not quite as easy... Obesity is a social problem, and raising taxes on junk food won't do anything to solve it.

If you're a middle class family you have the money and time to prepare healthy meals. If you chose not to do that you have the money and time to go to a gym (yes, you can run for free, but not when it's -20 degrees and the sidewalks are icy) and you can put your kids in extracurricular programs to keep them active.

If you're a single parent working multiple part time jobs you probably won't have the energy or resources necessary to plan out healthy meals and you'll end up eating a lot of wonderbread and canned food. And if you don't have a car then have fun walking back and forth to the cheapest grocery store and toting all your heavy potatoes and milk.

Edit: Also, items from the food bank usually aren't great for you either, and if you're going there you pretty much have no choice.
