I feel that its really a question of how you play RPGs. Do you like asking yourself, "What should you do next?" (i.e. more linear style) or "What do I want to do next?" (more non-linear). You certainly aren't locked in to one style all the time. My first few RPGs were all console ones (back in the NES/SNES days), so (personally speaking) I feel I got locked into the more linear style, so that when I tried more non-linear games (a few Gold Box D&D games) I felt lost because there was no clear cut way to proceed. Over the years though, I've drifted more away from the linear games, and more to games like Balder's Gate and Morrowind. For me, just getting used to the non-linear style took time, but I think now is more rewarding for me. To each his own. Back to the OP's topic: I have little hope that he'll come back and respond, but as I posted in my original reply, I would like to know more why he feels that the new systems that they did add (the new AI, physics engine, new stealth system, skills at higher levels) and remove (took away some skills, removed some spells that were considered game-breaking), didn't change the game any.

I'm semi-adjusted to non-linear gameplay, but the first time that you play a non-linear game, and if you aren't used to it... it's quite overwhelming. I'd suggest games that have a high number of side-quests, but not entire side stories, and move on to non-linear from there, rather than jumping straight in.
But that wasn't the problem with Morrowind, really. The problem with Morrowind? Cliff. Racers.

Anyways, I don't know, I've played linear games for a while, and I just jumped into Morrowind. It took a while to find stuff to do, but then I learned. And then I was happy up until I was running every part of the country. After that I was ecstatic.

The first mod I got for Morrowind was the one that removed all cliff racers.
The second was the one that got rid of that ugly enchanted item glow. Please tell me Oblivion doesn't have that damned glow.

In the screenshots I've seen, it has a glow, but doesn't seem as blinding as the glow in morrowind. (and I haven't heard of any cliff racer-type enemies yet,
)

I hate them. >:| Luckally, I haven't seen a single one yet. And I have never been overwhelmed by open endedness. Why? "Please, Mrs. Hero Kaijit! Save us!" "...Nah. I don't feel like doing the main quest. I wana do some stealing." "What the...stealing?! But we're DIEING here!" "Meh, not my problem." *walks off* What was funny is that I was stealing from their house. Then, whilst the enemy was distracted by burning their corpses, I stole their stuff to. SUCKERS! >:P ...OK, I admit a situation like that never actually comes up in Morrowind or Oblivion (that I know of, anyway), but it's still nice to dream up that kind of stuff. Current Character: Kaijit Assasin Planned Characters: Argonian Lock Picker. Dunmer Red Mage (Destruction, Blades, Light Armor, and Restoration). Bosmer Artillery Master (Bow and Destruction mastery). I'll probably think of more soon enough. :P

I loved the Kaijit, except they couldn't wear shoes. So I think I made my Kaijit walk his feet into bloody stumps, poor guy.
![]() That Bosmer Artillery Master sounds interesting, what's the bow like in Oblivion? In Morrowind, I never found a good use for it, than just hsooting people from really... really... really far away. Which was a lot of fun, come to think of it. I could get arrested for shooting someone in Balmora, without being IN Balmora.

I love the fact they got rid of that HORRID "Beast Waddle". Now my sleek and agile Kaijit actually LOOKS like he's sleek and agile.
The bow? At first it kinda sucks because...well...quite simply YOU suck at it. You have to work at it, but once you get the bow down, you'll find it's quite nice. Once your skill in it get high enough, you can use your block button whilst stringing the bow to zoom in, ala Fable. You can also still retrieve arrows from bodies, but you can also retirieve them from the environment if you miss. Mind you, there's a chance they'll break, but it's pretty low. It takes some work, so if you want the easy way, the good ole blade is still there for you. Or the fireball. But it's still way worth the pay off to go "sniper" on their asses. Specially if you're a thief or assasin. Like me. ;P And I can't help but love the bow in Morrowind, for one reason. Those little blue fuckin Rieklings in Solsteim. HATE them. LOVED to pick em off at a distance. And is Artilerist a word? I think that'd fit my Bosmer a little better. Has a ring to it. Anyway, the bow sucks at first, because of the dreaded "gravity" that brings our poor arows crashing to the ground. ;__; But as you get better, your arrows can travel farther with more acuracy, and eventually you'll be picking those stupid fucker bandits from half a mile away. :p Another Character: Kaijit Monk. What with the Hand To Hand bonus and all.

If I ever get a computer that can run this, I'll probably shoot for a Wood Elf (forgot their formal name) archer, who'd also be a treasure hunter (high luck, and minor magical abilities (traps and locks, mostly)).
So, what're the signs like for this? In Morrowind, only two or three were really that useful (I liked the Chariot though).

Most give you different ability boosts, some give you the same crappy powers.
The Lord's Fire Weakness has been reduced from 75% to 25%, whilst keeping the regeneration thing intact. I still wouldn't recomend it, but at least now you're not only slightly less combusteable as FUCKING GUNPOWDER! The Thief is the one if you want a treasure hunter. Gives you a bonus to agility, athletics, and luck. Very nice. :P
