As for sightings? I think that far too many sightings consist of some redneck out near Area 51 picking up his video tape and throwing his tin-foil frisbee, then acting all scared.
Most of these seem to be akin to Yeti/Sasqauch sightings. The claims usually share a common, eh, 'feel' of being dubious.

Personally, I don't really have a problem in any sense with the thought of E.T.'s. I would presume that the conditions of sentient life elsewhere would be greatly similar to our own, with varying levels of advancement - Meaning essentially that these 'aliens' would be bipedal and more human-looking than, erm, weird-insect looking...

For me, it's a non-issue. There's been no record of alien involvment in mankind's history that is at least somewhat verifiable... I wouldn't need concrete evidence so much as that; History. Records of contact with, or belife in aliens that are consistent. If they exsist, we'll (collectivly) find out when we find out.

I should clarifiy that this reasoning doesn't, for me, nessiecerily apply to extra-dimensional 'life'... But that's probably a topic for another time.

We live in a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig universe. I can't imagine we are alone.

I don't see what motive could possibly exist for keeping UFOs a secret.

Panic, plain and simple, there would be many a crisis to deal with if aliens, or Extra-terrestrials as they are so called, were revealed to be in existance.
It might be that they have kept it a secret to long that they have buried themselves in it.
But yea, massive global crisis of faith and unyeilding unsympathetic panic.

Oh yes, can you imagine if all the sudden every world power just came out and said "yea there’s some aliens out there, we have seen a few, talked to a few, and swapped some tech. with a few."

Granted, it would be more official than that, still can you imagine the effects that it would have on the relatively dumb masses.

Hate groups(K.K.K. in space) panic, collapse of social order, just all sorts of bad shit.

That would make any alien species think “woah fuck that!”

The guy says - The government isn't letting me know all it's secrets, and I know the government keeps secrets, therefore... aliens!

He gives no evidence whatsoever for aliens, only that the government is keeping secrets. Yup, no doubt it is. Because of aliens? Now that's just a little bit of leap.

"But why would they do that?" =/= "ALIENS!"

*waits for Satan's onion's Rimmer reference*

If they're watching and waiting, they have at least several hundred years before we can develop space travel.

Otherwise, now would be the time to conquer us. Unless they fear nukes?

Or maybe they're waiting for the day we no longer hate each other (kkk adapts to space?). In which case, several thousand years of waiting is being optimistic.

The fact that we can concieve of it at this point though would make it seem like they might want to say 'oh yes, here we are'?

Not likely.

It's like Star Trek, or Star Ocean, or whatever.

You don't share technology that might drastically alter the history of a planet. Now, we're well developed, but not nearly as developed as we'd need to be in order to make grand space travel conceivable. And until we can hope to travel at the speed of light... I don't think we'll grab the attention of a higher-minded alien race.

And you never know, maybe we'll be the first planet to discover new life.

To quote an old fav:
"I think the best proof that there is intelligent life out there is that none of it has tried to contact us."

I humbly point out, that if aliens are so advanced as to come huge distances to visit our planet, what are the odds the would let us have/keep any of their ships that actually did crash?

Unless we're dealing with, say, The Linear men what differance would it make? And who's to say that these supposed alien's would subscrube to, what I guess we'll call 'Rodennberry Theory', aka thr Prime Directive of 'Star Trek'?
