I played Hybird Heaven. Interesting theory, but I only played it for an hour or so. Imagine a turn-based fighter with RPG elements. You can move around the arena in real time, but when you hit 'attack', a menu comes up. Had an interesting EXP and level up thing, since you leveled up each limb/body part you used (threw a punch or got hit). A good idea in my opinion, that needs to be reimplemented. Hmmm, I can program....
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber rocked out with its cock out. It took the whole 'move your units to a place, capture a base, navigate different terrain, outmanuever your enemies' from real time strategy, and took the 'level up and change your minion's class' from RPG, and the best part? The battes between your units were all predetermined, with each dude in the unit attacking in a pre-set manner, determined by the direction they faced, their position on a grid, and the enemies they were fighting. I loved it, it took all my favorite elements from different genres, it sold shitty. T_T And if it wasn't up on a shelf, and I had a dozen games for present systems to play, I would be playing Star Fox 64 and Perfect Dark RIGHT NOW. I have(had?) the <evil alien name> complex memorized. I can't remember its name, but it is basically the default multiplayer map, has black and tan walls/flooring. ANYWAY, it was great. Laptop Gun, CMPs with lock-on, Avenger, Falcon... I wish I could have some of those things. <drool> |

Mario 64 is certainly the finest in pure 3D platforming.
Other games up the ante graphically or in terms of added gameplay features, but they lose something in the added complexity. I really could spend hours just making Mario run around doing nothing in particular. Playing FPS games on the N64, however, was like being beaten in the skull with a sack of wet cement.

Super Smash Bros., Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time... all sucked. Eh heh, just kidding. If I actually said that, I would get hunted down by N64 fan boys and get pelted by... oh, I don't know, stuff. It's happened already.
Anyway, OoT, Goldeneye, SSB, Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day... well, maybe not that last one, but the rest were all great. I grew up with an SNES, and I remember first coming home with the 64. It was truly magical. Is it just me, or are there a lot of negative waves coming from the 64? It seems to me like it's hated, at least now that Gamecube is out. Which makes no sense to me whatsoever; you would think the console that didn't suck would be less hated. But, this is the internweb: endless possibilities. Even dancing badgers. [Edit: Ah yes, now I remember why I'm not particularly fond of the N64. No RPGs. Aside from Zelda, that is. :p ]

Then I would spend hours trying to shoot myself out of the cannon at the beginning of the first level and hit the turtle, then get on his shell and ride it around the level until it broke. If I missed the turtle, I would go back to the cannon and try again. I think I eventually mastered the cannon thing, so I started trying it from the cannon on the floating island. That was hard... Mario Kart 64 was so much better then Double Dash... The racing is a little better in DD, but 64 had better maps (Especially the battle maps. DD butchered Block City). Quote:
Conker's bad? Conker's had the best multiplayer. I loved shooting my friends with a rocket launcher as they tried to storm the beach, the best part was that I was an evil teddy bear.

I wouldn't consider CBFD bad, just not a game I remember when I think of the N64. Multiplayer is actually the best of any game I've ever played, in my opinion. I played Heist with three other friends for three hours straight once. Beach is addicting; really fun to play 2v2. War on colors is insane. Every little mini-game available for multiplayer is awesome. I just can't get over multiplayer.
But I don't like to think of it as a classic.

So much time spent on Starfox 64... None of it wasted. Man that was a fun game. My friends and I still go back and play Goldeneye/Mario Cart64. they are just classics. Gotta love taking that huge jump in the very last level of Mario Cart and traversing half the course in 5 seconds.

I wish I had bought more N64 games, but I was young and could only buy a few. I only have Zelda:OoT, Jet force Gemini, Pokemon Snap, Rayman 2, Super Smash Brothers, and Star wars Episode one Racer.

I was actually just given an N64 for graduation, along with Perfect Dark. I quickly went online and bought the expansion pak and Paper Mario. Oh and Conker's Bad Fur Day. I'm ADORING Paper Mario. Who knew that one of the finest action-RPGs ever came out on a system that was otherwise completely RPG-less. (more or less).
Xiv: You didn't think Conker's was great? Heh. I'm having a blast with it. The only thing that bothers me about N64 is the graphics, but, of course, I'm willing to ignore them for the awesome gameplay. But I remember telling my buddy just the other day that I wish they would've waited another console generation before going 3D. Looking back at N64 and PS1 games now... god, most of them were UGLY. Also: I still like Jak 2 more than Mario 64. Don't get me wrong, I think Mario 64 is an amazing game. I actually have a friend who claims he can't stand it, and I always tell him how I can't believe he cannot recognize the pure gaming beauty that the game has. But I think Jak 2 is just funner at what it does. Heh. |
