As to Merlin vs. Gandalf, I'd like to point out that Gandalf is not human. He's not even elven. He's a maiar spirit, and, even though much of his power is denied to him, he's still got enough to face a Balrog, or perform any of a number of other feats that he performed in the books.
Merlin is very powerful indeed, but I don't believe that he's a match for a maiar. And bringing Excalibur into it is a bit unfair, don't you think? If this were Arthur, then yes, but not for Merlin.

Merlin is a Half-Fiend (his father was a demon), and that gives him all sorts of powers. He also had some ability to read the future, and casts much more combative spells than Gandalf (your point about Excalibur is a good one, so I won't even mention that weapon). He also has some skills with weaponry, making this a surprisingly even fight. Merlin might use his divinations to figure out Gandalf's typical battle strategy, then create a strategy to combat it. Or Gandalf might decide to use something stronger than flaming pinecones, and burninate Merlin. Still, I think that if Gandalf had any powerful battle spells, he would have used them against Saruman, instead of just throwing him into a wall a few times. Merlin wins, but then Raistlin kicks his ass.

Well once upon a time in middle earth the Maiar and Valar and such battled at full power. it nearly unmade the world. After that both sides agree to certain restrictions. I'm not even he sure could fight at full power if he wanted to, but if he did he could shatter continents.

As to Gandalf's powers, as I said, he wrestled a Balrog, but remember that he also chased away the Nazgul with his powers. He used hiss powers only seldom and in a minor capacity for two reasons: 1) He was only supposedto help the free peoples, not do their work for them, and 2) It would have been a beacon for his enemies. By the way, can anyone remember whether maiar and valar are the plural, and maia and vala the singular, or if it's the other way around? I'm not sure, and it's really annoying me...

Gandalf's powers seem to be more physical, then, compared to some of the others. He tends to buff himself with his magic, then drive away things rather than smite them.
Yes, I'm sure Gandalf was a minor valar...and I might be able to recall his name, too. I think it was Olorin. grammar help? Mair and Valar are like moose. Same word for singular and plural. Maiar were nature spirits, and the valar were more like angels....the Maiar dealt with the everyday affairs of Middle-Earth and the physical world, while the Valar dealt with battling evil and governing everything. Morgoth was unusual because he gave the Maiar under him so power, boosting their normal capabilities. A trickster spirit with the power to shapechange becomes the deadly Sauron, who had the form of a werewolf for a long time; and an enchanting nymph-like creature who can drain the strength from her victims turned into a powerful Vampiress. These are some examples of the Maiar who served Morgoth and were corrupted by him, as well as a short description of their new forms. Morgoth's very nature seemed to make him twist what was already made in an effort to "improve" it, much like Yawgmoth of MtG. NOW you may all laugh at me, and call me "nerd!" for my useless knowledge. [edit] Voltron beats Megazord, because Power Rangers are a pathetic rip-off of Voltron.

Voltron wins against the original Megazord, hands down. Why? Voltron can fly, has a varitey of weapons, and while it's crew does indeed yell out the name of every attack they are about to do, they don't strike posses as they are doing it, and can thus attack fast than the Power Rangers. Also take into account that each Voltron Lion can fight effectively alone, whereas the only zord that could fight by itself was the T-Rex zord. That...and the Megazord was the biggest of Voltron ever, and the original is always better than a rip-off.

You know, the Power Rangers series is actually quite old. I have no clue about any dates, but I wouldn't doubt it if someone were to tell me that the Power Rangers are actually older. The first one we saw in North America was actually like, the ninth series or something.
Oh wait, I do have a date for the Power Rangers series that we know. It was released in 1975 as, "Dinosaur Task Force Zyuranger." The original Voltron however, was released in 1984. Who's the ripoff now? Edit 1: Voltron still beats Megazord down though. So what about Voltron vs Xenosaga's Erde Kaiser? Edit 2: Actually, pretty much any giant robot is a ripoff of something that came out in the sixties or seventies. Back then, and still today, those shows were released en masse as thirty minute advertisements for the action figures. You may only think of shows like Macross, or Gundam coming out of that era, but there were a shitload of them, and they all looked suspiciously similar to each other. I myself, have a Gundam knockoff from something called "System Infection," or something like that. Gundams are generally made to somewhat resemble samurai though, so it isn't too surprising. Edit 3 (the holy spirit): Come to think of it, I think Spider Man actually had the first giant robot in a live action series. There was a Japanese show that featured Spider Man way back in the seventies. His robot's name was, brace yourselves, "Marveller," it transformed into, "Leopardon." He also had a car called, "Spider Machine GP-7."
