WM is in her depressed/defeated pose, not her about-to-kick-some-ass pose. Her black and white world view can't reconcile the BM that's still human enough to write the note, with the BM who can murder children.

Yeah people, don't act like Black Mage is completely evil, he is evil, yes, but he's not completely soulless. If he was, he wouldn't have told WM about how he powers the Hadoken and how he got it. Black Mage probably didn't feel that much when he sacrificed the children to this dark god. Maybe he's feeling a bit of regret now, but if Black Mage didn't sacrifice those children, he probably wouldn't have been able to survive until now. How would he have been able to defeat the giant at the beginning of the comic? How would he have been able to save everyone the few times he didn't use Hadoken for negative, destructive purposes. Though I suppose he doesn't know that many other spells because he relied so much on Hadoken to get himself through any tough situation he's been through.
Though I wonder, is this dark god the lord Chaos, though I think it would probably be someone else since he acts like he doesn't know lord Chaos. Right now, White Mage, as innocent as she is, is still in shock from BM's admission. I can't wait until Saturday to find out how she reacts. These recent developments have me on the edge of my seat. |

Hmmm, possiblility of :wmage: going insane?
you mentioned that her world is white and black, good and evil, one or the other. I remember in an episode of some anime I watched (think it was Yu Yu Hakusho) one of the villians saw good and evil, and when what he thought was good turned out to be evil, his world turned over and he went insane, creating other personalities. I'm not saying that this is what is going to happen to :wmage: but its a possibility since kurosen (brian) seems to be taking ideas from shows, though not anime... hmm the question has been presented and I shall await my answer. |

*de-lurks for a moment*
I've gotta say, I'm amazed at the lengths people will go to just to NOT believe BM is "really" bad. What's his body count up to? I know he kills people more or less randomly, and often for fun. Thief actually played his part where it involved the dwarves, but that's because Thief is a *holds nose* smelly, pointy-eared elf and therefore hates smelly stunties. Red Mage just kind of went along with it all, but of course we've long known, I think, that RM is totally indifferent to anything that doesn't concern stat-pumping and etc. Besides, he probably disregards anyone outside of the immediate party as "only NPCs." And Fighter -- I mean, he's FIGHTER, man. But BM ... BM massacred them just because he could, same as always. BM makes Batman's Joker seem almost like a nice guy. The fun of BM -- as with the likes of Beavis and Butthead -- is that you KNOW he's never going to get better. There will never be a "very special" moment with BM ... or if there is, it'll only be Brian setting us up (as happened here). Frankly, I see no reason for BM to change. I like seeing him disembowel a_random_villager001 just because he can, even as horrible as that would be in real life. He fits just fine with the rest of his amoral party in this way, too, so that honestly ... it's WHITE Mage with her silly morality who's the odd one out. I mean, even outside of the Light Warriors, who's truly "good" in 8-bit, ASIDE from WM? She doesn't fit. It's like that kid who got introduced late on in Married: With Children and totally didn't mesh. I'm not saying she needs to go, but I don't think she's a good person to have as a regular part of the party because she takes the fun out of the random, senseless evil acts the rest of them (and especially BM) engage in by making us really think about how awful they are. Unless she gets corrupted and turns evil (or at least Red Mage-style indifferent) herself, in which case ... cool. You know? Last edited by Orestes; 12-09-2004 at 01:46 PM. |

I think we can all agree that :bmage: is evil, and should remain so. I do like the idea of :wmage: going a little insane at this latest revelation, though. Should be quite interesting.

The note cannot be entirely superfluous. As someone else has said, Black Mage is not smart enough to write something like that in order to gain her sympathy and then carry on with that bluff for multiple strips. Yes, of course Black Mage is a destructive little bastard. Of course White Mage is a bleeding heart with a temperament. Of course they will never find themselves mutually in love. However, I was simply hoping that there would be more to this. This does not feel like it was a set-up to an amusingly anticlimactic moment. Rather, it feels like leading White Mage into thinking one thing, then another, and ultimately not being able to, as someone mentioned, reconcile the Black Mage who can write a thoughtful and (dare I say) compassionate letter with the Black Mage who can murder children. In short, I was hoping for more character development, and I am still hoping that this seeming reversal of the last few strips is simply to allow the overriding plot to continue until the mages' next private conversation or private thoughts. There has to be more to this. Not a romantic relationship, never that, but hopefully something. Hopefully.
