GHA! It is getting worse!
I was watching X-Play yesterday (one of the few good shows on G4TechTv, IMO) and before they gave a re/preview of The Getaway: Black Monday, they immediately labled it as "GTA in London" and that it was following a series of GTA clones: True Crime, GTA with Snoop Dog; Driv3r, GTA that just plain sucks; ect. ect. First off: The Getaway is NOT GTA in London. GTA has already BEEN to London in a special edition version of the original GTA(Yes, they made other GTA games before GTA3). The controls in the games are in no way similar, and The Getaway supports a "clean interface" system, meaning no life bars, money, maps, ammo, gun selection, or anything on screen. This alone makes it entirely different from GTA, where those sorts of things are what the game is based on. Secondly: True Crime is far more actiony than GTA can ever hope to be. Gameplay mechanics don't even begin to match up with GTA. Finally: I do agree Driv3r sucked. But it sucked on it's own merrit, not by watering down GTA. So why are these games considered GTA clones, even though they each have their own gameplay mechanics, unique concepts, differing locales, and storyline elements? Answer: Because you get to steal cars and shoot people from a third person perspective. That hardly seems fair now does it? |

Yes I saw that episode as well and personally I think that they only reason they made that comment was because G4 forced them too. I mean look at what else they've been forced to do in order to keep their jobs, i.e. that stupid set they have to work in now. Really X-play just isn't reliable since G4 took over, personally my conspiracy theory is they want to make all the reviews in all their shows be nearly exactly the same. Espicially with X-play so they can fuse that and Judgement Day together with less complaints. Unlike the radical changes in the screen savers.
On an afterthought I don't think its too bad to compare other games to GTA. I mean what do we base games on if not eachother. Now I'm not say declare every game a bad GTA clone, but don't get so pissed off when people say "You can steal cars in Halo2 ala GTA." Sure their nothing alike but all they were trying to say is that you can steal cars, and whats the game most famous for stealing cars? GTA of course (Even if it sucks.) |

I am so sick of True Crime being compared to GTA when True Crime has bullet time, kung fu, wild fight sequences, leveling up systems and special abilities! and Driv3r sucked because it was just Driver 2 upgraded, and Driver 2 was horrible because they couldn't get out-of-car sequences correct. The fact that they tried again and got a GTA clone wasn't fucking on purpose. uh, I haven't played The Getaway.

Because that's what it always seemed like to me. Especialy since it came out about a year and a half after the Matrix with, oh look, bullet time. -_-

Sorry, I hadn't seen the bullet time or leveling up in True Crime. Though the new GTA has leveling up of individual stats.... I've actually only scratched the surface of True Crime. I'm sure it's a great game. But, in some core aspects, it's just like GTA. Please, I spent afternoons riding around killing people in GTA. Then I spent afternoons riding around killing people in True Crime. The only difference is that in GTA, I can pick them off with a sniper, or shoot them with an M4, or lunge at them with a katana, or bazooka their asses. In True Crime, I get my standard issue, and whatever some criminal drops, which lasts for limited time. Anyways, I'm going to play True Crime soon. Or Morrowind. It's just like GTA in it's open-endedness and the fact you can steal things. Maybe not cars, but.... (PLEASE, for the love of GOD read the sarcasm.)

Spiderman 2 was like GTA...
Half-kidding, really. That new Zelda game looks like a total ripoff of LotR. To take this in another light... Penny Arcade: Something Borrowed.

Basically any game that comes out can be compared to another game. By the looks of things, GTA is the scape goat for the comparison. It's why I try not to compare games to one another, and just play the game for what it is. But of course its really f(@#$ng hard with all the peice of sh!t reviews they are giving games. That is why I'm declaring that video games be reviewed on the basis of what the game itself is, and not what its competition is.

And about the newZelda game being a 'total ripoff of Lord of the Rings'. If you're JUST now noticing the various things that are similar in Zelda and Tolkiens works, you need to open your eyes buddy. Elves, orcs, giant spiders, dwarves, dragons, giant swamplands, grasslands and forests that people get lost in.....every Zelda game has a ton of Tolkien in it. This is justthe first one to have the graphics to make it look 'realistic' (and happens to coincide with a movie version of the LotR). By thew way, if you didn't get it, every single thing I mentioned in all that above paragraph can both be found not only in the Lord of the Rings, but the original Legend of Zelda made in 1984.

Hey, would you look at the context of my post?
A joke, then the thing you took seriously, then a link to a relevent comic strip! Could the middle item in my post possibly be meant as humorous?
