(Supposing that, if the controller is split, it looks like the image in the article.)
The major problem I could see would be hitting the 4 buttons with your left thumb. You'd have to reach OVER the joystick to hit them. Look at the triangle button. How hard would that be to use? And also, having split controllers really wouldn't make it easier. How else would you hold them, rather than one resting on each leg? It would quickly become annoying to hold them any other way. Basically, any comfortable way you could hold them, you could use a whole controller. And imagine playing with 4 people - EIGHT little controllers around. How hard would that be to store? I have trouble with 4 Gamecube controlers. Sega probably won't abandon the 4 trigger buttons, especially if they were separated like so.

I bet the PS3 will have exactly the same controller as the PS1 and PS2. Sony don't look like the type of company that does any hardcore innovating. Thats for the likes of Nintendo and Sega. (although, to be fair they did do the "eye toy", but i think that anything that is not a peripheral accessory will be similar to past console versions to attract casual gamers.)
PS3 will look like some kind of "Xtreme" fashion accessory, either black or chrome or some other "fashionable" colour. It will still have 2 controller ports but it will go online. This is not from any kind of source, im just looking for a pattern from their past consoles. Sony tend to attract the casual gamer crowd (good business sense to me) whilst still catering for the hardcore gamers. just my two pence |

As far as launch for the console, Sony has stood firm on a launch date right with the Xenon and the Revolution. Microsoft says they will launch by the end of 2005, with Nintendo and Sony possibly a few months behind on that. Any later would be a significant kick in the pants to either company, well, not so much in japan, but definitely in US and Europe.
As far as the split controllers, where is there any backing of this whatsover, I've never seen any rumor reports or anything outside of this. I do think that sony will finally add a 3rd and 4th controller to the mix, at least I hope. It's the main reason I will buy multiplayer games for other consoles if I have the choice, well, that and graphics Backwards compatablity may not really be a possibility due to the chipset, correct me if I'm wrong, but the ps2 doesn't run on a powerpc chip, which is what the Cell processor is, well, rather several powerpc chips. However, even if the chipset itself was compatable, it would still significantly throw the price of the console up another couple of dollars, main reason being the laser. blu-ray lasers can't read dvd's or cd's, so sony would have to throw in a second laser in order for it to read the previous games. Also, I hate the look of what they came up with, circular = no. |
