Thread for links to things that are funny. These can be links to the You Tubes or to Onion articles or to whatever all kind of thing happens to make you chuckle. They cannot be images! Do not post images here because images require scrolling and when people get sore index fingers on account of having to do all kinds of scrolling over your images it will be on your head.

Please no:

- NSFW material

- Generally gross/weird crap

- Random links that aren't especially funny or have any discernable attempt at humor that you're posting for the thrill of slapping links to any random thing you scraped off the bottom of the internet.

ALSO

- Interesting or neat videos that may not be strictly funny but that you aren't looking to explicitly discuss or mock or whatever [i.e. it's not the focus of a whole topic] will fit in here just fine.

- a brief description that tells everyone what they're about to click on is appreciated

- in the general interests of promoting quality over quantity, no more than say, three links per post. Exceptions made if it is some kind of series that all goes together although if it's that huge of a series you'd probably do better to see if there's one index page or something for it that you can link.

- at least every third post has to have links! Tangential discussions about a particularly interesting one are still fine, just throw in some links for content too, and if your tangential discussion becomes longer than 10 posts or so you might want to consider starting a thread. Honestly though this one's not so much an enforced rule as a guideline.

Actually, fighting with a cane shares a bit in common with fighting with a tonfa/nightstick. It's good for various traps, trips, disarming maneuvers, clubbing, etc.

Also, it makes you look totally snazzy.

Nad Shots (http://nadshot.com/): The blog that bravely, tirelessly, heroically strives to be the internet's number-one repository for comic book characters getting kicked in the dick.

Is Deadpool Rochambeauing Captain America (http://nadshot.com/2007/07/21/deadpool-vs-captain-america/) the sort of thing you would enjoy? How about Spider Jerusalem exhibiting his trademark sense of fair play (http://nadshot.com/2007/07/28/spider-jerusalem-exibit-a/)? All this awaits you - and more!

Out there, in the world of webcomics, there are a lot of jackholes. However, some webcartoonists genuinely nice people. People who only want to entertain you and help you. Take Kris Straub, creator of several fine comics. He wants to help you. He wants to help you get a job, and is going to tell you how to interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31Zdc6IHEdg) for your prospective job.

Gather around, children. It's story time.

Back in the long long ago, the way back when, there was a man who went by the name of Bill Hicks. A genius comedian who's routines have only become stronger and more relevant through time. Sadly, he passed away due to pancreatic cancer in February of 1994, cutting short what was sure to be a long and amazing carrer.

About 5 months before his death, he made an appearance on David Letterman, his twelth such appearance. His entire comedy routine was deleted from the broadcast, no reason given. This understandably upset Hicks.

On David Letterman's broadcast Friday, January 30th, 2009, he invited Bill Hick's mother onto the show, and finally manned up to the censorship, saying it was his call that got the clip deleted. He then played the deleted bit. For your viewing entertainment, here is Bill Hicks (http://lateshow.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/video_player/index/php/976782.phtml).

If you can't tell what happened, Cloud reflected the Emperor's own Flare back at him, activated Ex-Mode, and when the Emperor got blindsided by it Cloud used the HP damage opportunity to kill him with Ex-Burst when normally you're only supposed to activate that with your own attacks.

The most hilariously awful dating advice (http://www.coolestdates.com/ideas_for_asking.htm)

Get a bag of skittles. On one side of the Skittles write a message: "Will you go to the dance?" On the other side put numbers so that when the numbers are in order the message is spelled. Put all the Skittles in a jar with instructions on how to arrange the Skittles. They then have to sort all the Skittles to find the ones with letters.

Rent a monkey suit and take a bunch of bananas. Slit the fruit and slide notes into each banana, which when pieced together form the poem of your choosing. Plenty of "monkey plays" can be utilized.

If you want to ask someone, just put a baby pool filled with water in their front yard. Then put pennies at the bottom of it and some rubber duckies floating in it. Then have a posterboard saying " I would be a LUCKY DUCK if you went to _________ with me."

What. Just... what. I find it particularly amusing that half of the advice requires either for you to already be on the date or breaking and entering.

Bloody hell, you guys are too easily disturbed.

In real world news: Japanese robot learns to love, goes mental afterwards (http://www.muckflash.com/?p=200).

Kyoto, JP -3 March 2009- Staff. Researchers at Toshiba’s Akimu Robotic Research Institute were thrilled ten months ago when they successfully programmed Kenji, a third generation humanoid robot, to convincingly emulate certain human emotions. At the time, they even claimed that Kenji was capable of the robot equivalent of love. Now, however, they fear that his programming has taken an extreme turn for the worst.

“Initially, we were thrilled to see a bit of our soul come alive in this so called ‘machine,’” said Dr. Akito Takahashi, the principal investigator on the project. “This was really the final step for us in one of the fundamentals of the singularity.”

Kenji was part of an experiment involving several robots loaded with custom software designed to let them react emotionally to external stimuli. After some limited environmental conditioning, Kenji first demonstrated love by bonding with a a stuffed doll in his enclosure, which he would embrace for hours at a time. He would then make simple, but insistent, inquiries about the doll if it were out of sight. Researchers attributed this behavior to his programmed qualities of devotion and empathy and called the experiment a success.

What they didn’t count on were the effects of several months of self-iteration within the complex machine-learning code which gave Kenji his initial tenderness. As of last week, Kenji’s love for the doll, and indeed anybody he sets his ‘eyes’ on, is so intense that Dr. Takahashi and his team now fear to show him to outsiders.

The trouble all started when a young female intern began to spend several hours each day with Kenji, testing his systems and loading new software routines. When it came time to leave one evening, however, Kenji refused to let her out of his lab enclosure and used his bulky mechanical body to block her exit and hug her repeatedly. The intern was only able to escape after she had frantically phoned two senior staff members to come and temporarily de-activate Kenji.

“Despite our initial enthusiasm, it has become clear that Kenji’s impulses and behavior are not entirely rational or genuine,” conceded Dr. Takahashi.

Ever since that incident, each time Kenji is re-activated, he instantaneously bonds with the first technician to meet his gaze and rushes to embrace them with his two 100kg hydraulic arms. It doesn’t help that Kenji uses only pre-recorded dog and cat noises to communicate and is able to vocalize his love through a 20 watt speaker in his chest.

Dr. Takahashi admits that they will more than likely have to decommission Kenji permanently, but he’s optimistic about one day succeeding where Kenji failed.

“This is only a minor setback. I have full faith that we will one day live side by side with, and eventually love and be loved by, robots,” he said.

As I was reading that article I thought it would end up with something like... the robot tries to KILL ALL HUMANS because they took away the doll. The actual result is far, far better. Kenji, the robot programmed only to love... AND KILL.

It would be cliché to scream "Every Sci-fi story about robots ever was right! Run for the hills before the mechanical menace turns his electronic eye on you!" Plus, that would be super cool, in a horrible, terrifying way.

I'm more excited by this than anything. Well done, Japan. Someone make a cartoon, comic, light novel series, and a couple character albums about Kenji.

Here's some video of his grandpa or dad or something. It gives you an idea of what we're dealing with here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmtHBEU8lrk)

bluestarultor
03-06-2009, 06:40 PM
As both a programmer and hopeful human being with a small sci-fi bent, the Kenji thing is very sad. Clearly, someone messed up. Almost sounds like an infinite loop somewhere, or one with a sentinel that tops out far too high for the unit's own good, or anyone else's, for that matter. There needs to be an upper limit and hopefully some sort of degradation loop. That's how real learning works, you know. Habits that aren't reinforced slowly head towards extinction.

Really, I'm heartbroken that it turned out that way. Hopefully, they can correct the problem, or reset the unit somehow and tweak it so they don't have to start from the ground up. If they didn't put in some sort of failsafe that allows the unit to be reset, it shows poor planning and would really make this project's outcome tragic.

I figure I should probably link this at some point. (http://web.archive.org/web/20080208091645/http://atrocities.primaryerror.net/fatal.html)

The link would be a review of FATAL, which is certainly in the running for "Stupidest Piece of Shit Ever Wrought By a Human", and wins the category handsdown in tabletop RPGs.

Like reviews of these sorts of things invariably tend to be, the actual article is massive, about a million times better than the actual game itself in every way possible, and really funny (it also would make a sailor blush, so NSFW, I guess).

Goddammit.

I decided to see how fast I could lose the game.

It took me about 10 minutes, at the very top there's no way to stack a block on top of the other fast enough.

They should take the same idea using the games Pong, Breakout and Frogger.

I'm sorry, but that's less of a "song" and more of an impossible spamfest of random notes that goes so far as to break the very rules of how notes are supposed to be placed in the game.I'm also adding my non-support of this video. The song cannot be played, at all, no matter how much it is slowed down. It's simply against the rules to have a held note while you're required to strum another note, yet the song calls for this multiple times. It cannot be done, the note layout is bollocks, this video was a waste of time, playing it is a waste of time, and the guy who made the pattern wasted his time. Whoever made the pattern either had no understanding of pretend guitar playing or was some other stereotype that I don't want to define; insert your favorite one to hate.

That's just like...Its like making a DDR song that's impossible. Well, yes, congratulations. It is completely impossible to hit all the buttons at the same time repeatedly. Fascinating. It isn't even funny on any level.

And for a change of heart: a paralysed man walks once again after receiving a spider bite (http://www.mantecabulletin.com/news/article/2117/).

David Blancarte, 47, is on his feet for the first time since suffering major injuries in a motorcycle accident some 20 years ago.

“I can’t wait to start dancing,” he said as he looks forward to a full recovery after experiencing what some call a “true miracle.”

It was 1988 and Blancarte was working as a tattoo artist – as well as being a plasterer with his dad – in Tracy when he bought his first motorcycle. He said he was riding on Third Street when a woman motorist made a left turn in front of him. He crashed into her vehicle and was thrown over her car and onto the pavement.

His children recently saw him walk for the first time in their lives. They all attend Golden West School: 14-year-old twins Erica and Elizabeth and David Jr. 12.

The turn-around in his condition was ironically caused by the bite of a Recluse spider that put him in a Manteca hospital for five days. Then he was transferred to the Kindred (rehabilitation) Hospital in Modesto where he stayed for five months.

Blancarte said when he was evaluated at the Modesto hospital his lifeless legs were tested – actually electrically zapped by a doctor – to measure nerve function. Not having been able to use his lower limbs for two decades, he was in awe to hear that his nerves were actually alive and could move them again.

He said he’d been in rehab previously, adding that no one was able to help him. He had kept a close eye on Christopher Reeves, medical condition from his broken neck. He thought if the doctors found an answer for the Superman of the movies, there could be hope in his future. Prayer was a daily ritual for him as well – hoping his prayers would finally be answered.

Kindred social worker Cynthia Wilson said the Manteca man worked diligently through their rehabilitation efforts over four months, and he began showing great improvement.

She recalled the day his leg braces arrived. He put them on he was able to walk on the parallel bars back and forth. Two weeks later he was able to walk 150 feet with a walker, she said.

“For someone who was only in his 20s when he became paraplegic, he retained a good attitude—always smiling,” Wilson said. “He has been given back his hope. Thanks to the strong will of ‘Mr. B’ and the drive of our rehab staff, we’ve all had the pleasure of witnessing a true miracle.”

Blancarte said he now walks over 250 feet every day with his walker, and he can go up ramps and stairs. “This is a dream come true,” he said.

How heartwarming. <3

EDIT: Fucking arsehole got sent to jail (http://www.fox40.com/pages/landing_local_headlines/?Spider-Bite-Miracle-Man-Arrested=1&blockID=239367&feedID=190).

A Manteca paraplegic who said he can walk again, thanks to a bite from a rare spider, was arrested Friday on a domestic violence warrant.

David Blancarte's story garnered headlines earlier in the week.

He was unable to walk following a motorcycle accident some 20 years ago.

But a bite from a Recluse spider led to a change in his condition.

After receiving further medical treatment, Blancarte was able to get around with the help of a walker.

But on Friday, Blancarte was in the San Joaquin County Jail.

Japan built another robot! (http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/03/16/2517770.htm)

Japanese researchers have showed off a robot that will soon strut its stuff down a Tokyo catwalk.

The girlie-faced humanoid with slightly oversized eyes, a tiny nose and a shoulder length hair boasts 42 motion motors programmed to mimic the movements of flesh-and-blood fashion models.

"Hello everybody, I am cybernetic human HRP-4C," the futuristic fashionista said, opening its media premiere at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology outside Tokyo.

The fashion-bot is 158 centimetres tall, the average height of Japanese women aged 19 to 29, but weighs in at a waif-like 43 kilograms, including batteries.

She has a manga-inspired human face but a silver metallic body.

"If we had made the robot too similar to a real human, it would have been uncanny," one of the inventors, humanoid research leader Shuji Kajita said.

"We have deliberately leaned toward an anime style."

The institute said the robot "has been developed mainly for use in the entertainment industry" but is not for sale at the moment.

Hamming it up before photographers and television crews, the seductive cyborg struck poses, flashed bright smiles and pouted sulkily according to commands transmitted wirelessly from journalists via bluetooth devices.

The performance fell short of flawless when it occasionally mixed up its facial expressions - a mistake the inventors put down to a case of the nerves as a hail of camera shutters confused its sound recognition sensors.

The preview was a warm-up for the robot's appearance at a Tokyo fashion show on March 23.

Like its real-life counterparts, robot model HRP-4C commands a hefty price - the institute said developing her cost more than 200 million yen ($3 million).

NASA's online contest to name a new room at the international space station went awry. Comedian Stephen Colbert won.

The name "Colbert" beat out NASA's four suggested options in the space agency's effort to have the public help name the addition. The new room will be launched later this year.

NASA's mistake was allowing write-ins. Colbert urged viewers of his Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report," to write in his name. And they complied, with 230,539 votes. That clobbered Serenity, one of the NASA choices, by more than 40,000 votes. Nearly 1.2 million votes were cast by the time the contest ended Friday.

NASA reservesthe right to choose an appropriate name. Agency spokesman John Yembrick said NASA will decide in April, but will give top vote-getters "the most consideration."
