Q: How many discs is Mass Effect 2?

Mass Effect 2 spans two discs on both PC and Xbox 360. If you purchased the Collectors' Edition, there is a third DVD disc containing all the bonus content


Q: I went to a retailer and they said they were sold out of the Collectors' Edition, am I out of luck?

Nope! Certain retailers, such as the EA Store (www.eastore.com) still have Mass Effect 2 Collectors' Editions in stock. Additionally you can order the Digital Deluxe on PC which contains much of the Collectors' Edition content and even a few unique perks.


Q: What sort of DRM will Mass Effect 2 employ?

Mass Effect 2 will require a unique CD key to install on PC, and then you must have the disc in the tray to play the game. Additionally if you registered for the Cerberus Network, you must have an EA account to register your game too. If you purchased the digital version on PC, you will be able to install the game 5 times.


Q: How exactly does the Cerberus Network work?

Included in each copy of Mass Effect 2 for both PC (digital and box) and X360 there is a Cerberus Network card with a unique single-use activation code. From the Mass Effect 2 main menu in game, follow the instructions to register your code with the Cerberus Network. Once you are a member you will gain access to FREE additional content. Currently we have announced Zaeed, the deadly bounty hunter, the Cerberus Assault Gear, and a bonus N7 mission with more content on the way. Cerberus Network codes can be purchased separately as well. Follow the instructions from the Mass Effect 2 main menu for more information.


Q: Will there be regular paid DLC outside of the Cerberus Network?

Yes, there will be additional content outside of the Cerberus Network as well. We have not announced specifics of this content through. More information will come in the future.


Q: I received a promo code for bonus content how do I redeem it?

Make sure to create an account on the BioWare Social website (http://social.bioware.com). Using your EA account you will be able to redeem codes on the website. At that point you will download the content and install it. The next time you play Mass Effect 2 check your personal terminal on the Normandy for information on where to find your content.


Q: I received a Dr. Pepper promo code, how exactly do I redeem it?

To redeem your Dr. Pepper content, head to http://www.drpepper.com/promotions/ and enter your unique code. Follow the instructions that follow to download and install your content on PC or Xbox 360.


Q: How does the save import work?

If you played Mass Effect 1, and kept your save game files, you will be able to continue your progress in Mass Effect 2. You will be able to select the import on a by career basis. From the main menu, start a new game then choose to Import ME1 character. The save game import utility will walk you through the rest, including giving you basic information on the save file. For example, did you save the council, did Wrex survive, what was your character level, and more. On PC there is a Configuration Utility that will help you locate and import your ME1 save games. On Xbox 360 all you need is the gamer profile and save games to get started.


Q: How exactly does the PC Configuration Utility work with ME1 save games?

Here are step by step instructions on how to run and use the Configuration Utility to import your ME1 save game.
Run the Mass Effect 2 Configuration Utility from the main launcher
Click the 'Save Games' button
Click the 'Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games' button, and select the appropriate location for your ME1 save game. (the default location is My Documents\bioware\Mass Effect\Save)
This will copy the appropriate save games from your Mass Effect 1 directory into the proper place in the Mass Effect 2 directory.
Run Mass Effect 2, and from the main menu select 'New Game'
Select 'Import ME1 Character'
Your savegame should now show up in the list.


Q: So what exactly is carried over from Mass Effect 1? I had a Level 60 with specter gear?

The decisions, actions, and plot states you created in Mass Effect 1 will persist in Mass Effect 2. Additionally other factors such as your character level will grant you certain bonuses as well. If you acquired a high level of currency you will start Mass Effect 2 with a small boost to your starting income. Additionally if you completed the game as a paragon or renegade, a fraction of that alignment will persist into Mass Effect 2. This is designed to help give players who went the extra mile in Mass Effect 1 a quantitative boost in Mass Effect 2.


Q: So my character level will carryover?

Not exactly. If you reached level 49, you will receive a set of bonuses. If you reached 59 you receive more and 60 you receive the maximum perks.


Q: I heard that Mass Effect 2 only supports 11 saves, is this true?

No, we're pleased to say this was a misunderstanding and more information can be found on the Mass Effect 2 forums.


Q: It says the saved games must be on the hard drive and not an memory unit for Xbox 360. If I transfer my saves from my MU to the hard drive, will they work?

Your save games must exist on the original storage device that was used when you played through and completed Mass Effect 1. This can be on a MU or on the Xbox 360 hard drive.


Q: Once I beat ME2, will I be able to go back and play missed missions and new DLC missions?

Absolutely, upon completion of Mass Effect 2 you are returned to the Normandy and welcome to explore the galaxy and complete additional missions.


Q: So does that mean there is no New Game + in Mass Effect 2?

Nope. Once you complete Mass Effect 2, you can start a new game and import your ME2 Commander Shepard, much the way you did your ME1 character and play through again. Your level, weapons, armor, upgrades, currency, and codex entries will carry over.


Q: Will I be able to carry over my progress into Mass Effect 3?

Absolutely. Mass Effect is a planned trilogy and you will be able to import your progress into Mass Effect 3.


Q: What characters from Mass Effect 1 will be returning in Mass Effect 2?

That depends on if they survived your playthrough on ME1! When you import your save all the difficult decisions, including who to sacrifice on Virmire will carry over. That being said, if they survived they will be making a return in some form or another in Mass Effect 2. We have already announced Tali'Zorah's return as a squad-mate. The rest we don't want to spoil for you.


Q: Can Shepard really die in Mass Effect 2?

We wouldn't call it a suicide mission if it couldn't happen! Based on your actions if you don't prepare adequately for the final mission, Shepard and any number of squad mates could be killed in action.


Q: Who are my romance options in Mass Effect 2?

At this point we don't want to spoil the romantic interests for you. Those are for you to explore. That being said, we are confirming romance options in Mass Effect 2 for Commander Shepard.


Q: Will there be new weapons in Mass Effect 2?

Yes. Mass Effect 1 featured 4 basic weapon types. Mass Effect 2 will feature no less than 19 different weapons out of the box including the newly introduced heavy weapons. Check out the Arsenal section of the website for a look at some of the powerful new weapons you will be able to wield.


Q: How have the classes changed in Mass Effect 2?

The same six classes will be returning in Mass Effect 2. The Soldier, Vanguard, Adept, Sentinel, Engineer, and Infiltrator. However, each class has new powers and abilities including class unique powers. Check out the Universe section of our website for a breakdown of the six classes including videos.


Q: Will all players be able to hack and bypass in Mass Effect 2?

Yes, all player classes will be able to hack and bypass locks, secturity, etc. You will no longer need to bring a tech class with you.

Basically, the "ammo" are heatsinks. You fire the gun, and the heat gets dissipated into the sinks. They fill up and need to be replaced, hence the reloading.

In two years they figured out how to fire off rounds SO FAST that all guns would have similar overheating problems as ME1's sniper rifles, so they then figured out how to conduct that heat into a sink, that dissipates heat quickly by allowing packets of it to change state in a near immediate fashion. Once all the packets have changed state a new heat sink has to be placed in the gun so that the friction from firing rounds that powerful doesn't turn the gun to slag.

This is also why Cerberus didn't keep your god like spectre x and collosus/pred x equipment. It'd be useless against/with the new armaments being used.

Note: I totally just pulled all of that out of my ass and don't have the game (and therefore lack the codexes to look up the real reasoning), but it's really really really not hard to justify this if you care to at all.

Impressions: Very, very pleased. They fixed almost all the problems I had with the original game (inability to send squaddies to separate locations, stupid equipment system, Liara) and I love how they've diversified the classes. I'll definitely be playing through again. Might even try the original game again just to get some different decisions under my belt.

I've played for about 10 hours now. I think, so far at least, only have a couple complaints. I feel like I have no survivability. When my shield's go down I rarely have enough time to get behind cover before I get killed. Similarly, I can't count the number of times I've been killed because I had to reload or ran out of clips at the wrong moment.

Also, why implement a good armor customization system if Sheppard's the only one that gets to use it? It just seems really weird that none of your squad mates wear any armor even though they have kinetic barriers/get shot all the time.

...I just realized that if I wanted to actually experience every option in Mass Effect 2, I'd have to:

1: Play through Mass Effect 1 several times over, as a female paragon, male paragon, female renegade and male renegade;
2: Even those playthroughs could be further varied by allowing specific characters to live or die, and there's something like three love interests there;
3: Then there's the matter of class specializations, and it'd need at least what, six playthroughs to experience those?
3: Then I could play through Mass Effect 2, with presumably more love interests, possible endings, etc. I could literally take a single ME1 playthrough and turn it into three or more vastly different ME2 playthroughs.

...I'm going to need how many dozens of playthroughs to experience all the intricacies?

Wow. Bioware's come such a long way from the whopping two playthroughs I needed to feel like I fully experienced KOTOR. Once Mass Effect becomes a trilogy it's going to be even more convoluted, like a bewildering CYOA. It may eventually reach a point where no two given playthroughs could possibly be identical. We're becoming so spoiled, and the process of playing an RPG is becoming so interactive and catered to individual preferences, that I'm not sure we'll be able to enjoy linear RPGs again.

Even though BioWare didn't have much of a hand in it... KOTOR II needed more than two playthroughs for all the intricacies. I *STILL* haven't experienced the whole game yet, despite several playthroughs. Hell, just picking a sex has massive consequences, as you either get another Jedi Guardian or another Jedi Consular, which doesn't really balance out the whopping three Sentinels the game throws at you (if you're lightside/neutral up to the point where Mira joins the party), then on top of that there's six prestige classes on top of your initial class choice at the start of the game, and there are at least two different ways to finish up a planet's story, though your choices up to that point will make it different each time. I don't think I've even completely explored the dark side endings for Dantooine or Onderon yet. I always pick "Help Khoonda" and "Help Talia" despite being dark-side on some playthroughs.

Jesus, maybe I need to jump on the Mass Effect bandwagon, it sounds pretty badass if you need to replay the fuck out of it to get all the goodies.

'Course, I wouldn't have the time... between hatchin' new Pokeymans constantly, Starcraft skirmishes that take two hours to finish, and taking my Exile through Korriban for the tenth time... my gaming schedule is pretty booked, and my cash is mostly spoken for for the next month and a half.

It's not entirely a bad game in it's own right. If you want to blame someone for it's unfinished state... blame LucasArts. They tend to release shit early for no particular reason than making a deadline, which they don't seem to understand that no, you can't do that with games, if they're not finished, they're not finished.

The only problem with KOTOR II in it's released state is the lack of the droid factory world that HK47 is supposed to take you to in order to shut it down and stop cranking out inferior HK50s. While I would have liked to pursue that avenue of HK47s plot... it was never enough to keep me from playing.

But then I'm a die-hard Star Wars nut, happy to eat anything LucasArts shits in my direction, so I guess I'm probably all the more foolish for that.

BEAT IT, FINALLY

Only lost two people! One who I was trying to get killed and Jacob who got shot in the head because he couldn't hack and I sent him on a mission that required hacking. I did that because he volunteered and I figured he wouldn't have volunteered if he knew before hand that he would not be able to do this thing HOW SILLY OF ME. Everyone else survived, although the Normandy was kind of a mess even though I think I upgraded everything. New main gun hell fucking yeah, rip that shit in TWO. I saw a few points in the end mission where that person PROBABLY WOULD HAVE DIED were it not for my supreme faith in them and their supreme faith in me which was acquired by helping them find their father/sister/mother/etc. Nobody helped me find my mom. I couldn't even send her an e-mail what the fuck. No "HEY MOM I'M NOT DEAD LOVE YOU BYE" or ANYTHING what the fuck. Also my armor was cheesy as shit it was shiny black with neon blue lights all over and a death mask helmet that made me look kind of like a Salarian.

That's just the open Beta, right? I've heard a few bad stories of nasty bugs. I was hoping to wait for the finished product, which will probably never be released.

Then again, I could probably afford to just wait a while. I went on one of my classic "once every year or so, I get really depressed and go on a videogame purchasing binges" shortly after the debacle in December. This time, I decided to primarily flesh out my PS1 collection, and generally just buy tons of RPGs. In the past month, I've purchased Mass Effect 2 (and I haven't even beaten the original Mass Effect,) Einhander, Grandia, Thousand Arms, and Planescape: Torment. I've also pre-ordered Ace Attorney Investigations, I still got the Medieval II Let's Play to churn out, I still have a Persona 4 replay I'm working on, and...

...and I'm a full-time law student. (Who didn't do quite as badly as I feared last semester, thank heavens.)

...So yeah, I'd say my plate's pretty full these days. A little too full, really. Every year, I seem to have one month that's just a complete binge of purchasing excessive amounts of games, and then over the subsequent months I barely purchase any. This year, the season came earlier than expected.

It's not charging me for Zaeed and the Normandy addons, so that means either Bioware conveniently forgot to ask for my credit card info or it's free for everyone. It's strange insofar as I thought the purpose of this Cerberus Network would involve taking my money.

In other news as opposed to a stereotypical straight-Renegade or straight-Paragon approach I think I'm going to try my first full ME1/ME2 playthrough from the perspective of making decisions congruous with my own personal philosophy. Even if I don't max out either the Renegade or Paragon possibilities, it may be funner to attempt a personalized playthrough. I'll probably even try to make Shepard look like me. Should be a blast.

I did much the same.

But I tried to keep in mind that the ultimate goal is making sure we don't all burn in mechanical fire when the Reapers come back. So I selected the save that matched closest to the one I ran through Mass Effect 1 with that in mind, and kept the theme going.

By the time I'm done I won't even need to do jack shit to the Reapers. The rest of the Galaxy will do it for me.

...So I decided to play through just a tad of ME2 to give me a feeling for what to expect once I actually finish ME1.

...Holy shit. The graphics have substantially improved but what shocks me is despite this ME2 actually runs better than ME1 on my computer. It's less taxing on the CPU somehow. It's like a miracle of modern science.

The gameplay is far better as well. Cover is far easier and more intuitive. Controlling teammates is done through a very simple mechanic. It's really a substantial upgrade. I'm going to profoundly miss many of these features once I go back to ME1. (Which will basically be right now -- if I keep playing ME2 at this rate I won't allow myself to go back.)

Also, apparently if your default ME2 character is female, Ashley dies. Bummer.
