"Hasbro has unveiled the design of the new 75th anniversary edition of their classic board game, Monopoly, set to hit stores in fall of 2010. "Monopoly: Revolution Edition" is slick and round instead of dull and square, with debit cards and an ATM instead of paper money and a banker, clear plastic representations of the classic tokens (bye-bye, little boot!), and clips of popular songs (like Rihanna’s "Umbrella," Daniel Powter’s "Bad Day," and Beyonce's "Crazy in Love") that play after certain actions.
Players can collect $2 million dollars for passing “Go” instead of a mere $200"

... huh?
Wait, what the hell does any of those songs have to do with monopoly?!
Seriously Hasbro, was including those songs really necessary? Did you really believe it'd net you some sales?
Everything else I'm fine with.

No paper money?
How can one covertly steal money if it's not paper? That's like the whole point of Monopoly!

Next you're gonna be telling me the game can be played in thirty minutes, tops.
I mean the board barely looks even legible.
Though the two million thing is nothing new. Most online Monopoly games already use that system.

I can totally imagine the guy with top hat and mustache going: "Underlings! My game has become old! We must phreshen it up with kewl soundz and phat beats! Get me the MOST POPULAR songs ever created!"
And then the underlings record 30 minutes of horrible mainstream radio.
The end.

I don't think the debit card thing is quite new, either.
Also: you can cheat easily by muddling the calculus.

I'm actually almost tempted to buy it. It's kind of like an acknowledgment we're in the future now. But then I remember I'm a practical person and already have the classic and Pokemon editions that none of us play, anyway.
Come to think of it, I don't recall my family having ever finished a game of Monopoly. We've done crazy-hard puzzles and other board games, but when it comes to Monopoly we generally end up sick of each other and putting the game away before anyone ever gets eliminated.

Updating classic games isn't a big deal - same thing when they fixed Clue to have minor touches updated, IE changing the "Revolver" to the "Pistol."
But...this is far, far worse.

Wow, this could be the best game ever, but if it includes atrocities against humanity like the songs listed, I wouldn't buy it if they gave me money. No amount is worth it.

The 2 million dollar instead of 200 dollar thing is stupid. All it does is add more zeros and make the math a little more annoying.
Debit card kind of ruins the point of the game. No one plays Monopoly to NOT cheat. You are pretending to be a big real estate... person... thing... anyway, point being, you should be making underhanded deals with the banker or being the banker and skimming off the bank, and trying not to get caught. That's the metagame and like 90% of what makes it fun. You gotta watch the banker like a hawk.
Kind of like making under the table deals in Axis and Allies and handing your allies money and shit under the table to keep them afloat.
But all that I could deal with. It's not a big deal.
Then they had to add music. Ugh.

Hahahaha. The board change is fine, the money change/card system has been done with other versions of monopoly. But songs? Really?
Last game of monopoly I played ended up with 2 people: one person own 90% of the board, and the other person had the other 10% but also had side deals with the o ther play so he didn't have to pay rent on 80% of that players property. They both had shit loads of money and 80% of the board was rent freezones. That one took a while.
And fuck stealing money from the bank. The real way to cheap at monopoly is actually to form a monopoly. If 2 players band together, make a series of ridiculously one-sided deals and forego rent on each others properties you should be able to shunt the other players out of the game. The trick is to hide your collabaration- you have to make deals that could be plausiable for as long as possible.

Like topical special editions, the songs are there to ensure that this iteration of a system that has worked fine for 75 years will be outdated within two years, tops. Then they can sell the next special edition. The future, ladies and gentlemen!

Wait, so whenever somebody does a particular thing, the game is going to screech ELLA ELLA EH EH EH at us?
Now I'm glad I drove my family away from Monopoly. Thankfully we still have Scrabble, that's still fun to play.

It's not as if this is a replacement for the original. It's a special edition.
I really like the board redesign, though.

Without trying to sound like Barrel here, I'm just so over and done with boring kiddy board games, I only play sauve European board games now. Hmm what's a word Barrel usually uses, um...
Monopoly is so 20th century kerfuffle!

Making the board round sounded like a good idea, though I can't say I like the new look very much. I still expected squares instead of pie slices, is probably why.
The songs sound idiotic and inane, since it seems difficult to connect them in any way with finance, but surely there is a way to turn them off...surely. They can't be that cruel.
Why didn't they pick songs that had to do with money to play, anyway? "Money" by Pink Floyd or "Money Can't Buy Me Love" or a bunch of other songs would've made much more sense than this new-age pop BS crap.

Or, and this may sound a little crazy, why not just have it not play music at all? Seriously, that's fucking stupid. Also, Monopoly, as a game, has remained popular for the better part of a century. It doesn't need a goddamn update. It's fine.

I play Diplomacy like a sophisticated gentleman. In fact I win diplomacy like a sophisticated gentleman.
We still play monopoly though, only with crazy crazy rules like you can make sidedeals for anything you want, and there is an ombudsman card which causes all kinds of shit.
But with Azis sentiment we play Traders of Genoa more which is like Monopoly but less shit.

That is because you have only see amateur charlatans selling lies and treachery. I bring peace and hope, such that fellow empires are delighted to join my side.
I do not need lies, I do not need false alliances- my word is true and so are my ultimate victories.

You sound like every backstabbing fucker I've ever played against.
We should set up a game (via FB or something) at some point. It'd be interesting :P

I actually hate Monopoly and every game of Monopoly I've ever played I've ended up hating everyone involved in it. I think it's easily the most divisive game on the planet, and is actually quite despicable. They should come up with a version that creates less intense hatred in the players.

Then it wouldn't be the Monopoly we all know and hate.

Isn't that the point of monopoly? It's to simulate the impersonal world of high finance, where your goal is to murder everybody else. It wouldn't work otherwise!

As opposed to the world of hard hitting political relations presented in Diplomacy where the goal is to murder everyone?
