I'm tempted to say Simon isn't THAT bad, but his jump physics really are perfectly incompatible with Mario levels.
Megs on the other hand is easy mode.

hands down, best game of the new game. Move over galaxy 2, this is the new Mario Game!
Link and Samus totally kick ass.

Samus is terrible due to the fact that everything is too short for her to shoot and she can't crouch and fire. Simon is better, even if his jumping takes some getting used to.
Bill is just proof that you never send a fat plumber to do a marine's job.

Samus is much better when you realize that you should just use her like Mario until you get a wave beam with the fireflower.

Fun fact with Samus. You can still do multiple bomb-jumps. It ain't too useful for the majority of the game, but you can use it to always get max score on the flagpoles.
And yes. Bill makes the entire thing a crazy slaughterfest once you get the spreader.

Samus is much better when you realize that you should just use her like Mario until you get a wave beam with the fireflower.Ok yeah, granted.
First level I used her in was 4-1, and that's kind of a bitch as Mario so it's a super bitch with Mario except you can't run.
She has the best jumping ability too now that I notice. Moves a little slow, though. Fucked me over in 8-4, and once in 8-1.
Plus her shots stun, which is damn useful against anything not a goomba.
Only momentarily, and so does everyone else's.
Bill's still the best. His normal gun is about equivalent to Samus's powered up gun, except he can lay down to shoot low enemies, his machine gun is already better than anyone else's weapon except maybe Mega Man's ('cause Mega Man has the perfect height), and spread shot is amazing.
I'd put Mega Man at second best, due to being at the perfect height to shoot things + the slide is great in a lot of places, and can really help out on some of the longer stages where it gets to be a race against the clock seeming as no one but Mario can run.
Samus probably third, then Link and Simon are kinda tied for last, depending on the level (more enemy heavy levels are easier with Simon, levels that involve more precision jumping are easier with Link).
Mario himself probably ranks right under Samus.
I do like how they each control like they did in their own games, too.
Also, on using Link and Simon--Boomerang and Axes are pretty much essential for either of them. Simon still gets a little tricky on the jumping, and Link is still harder to use than say... anyone who isn't Simon or Link, but if you master the axe and boomerang they're both pretty good. There's lots of things I'd rather do with Link or Simon than Samus assuming you don't have any power ups.
Also, tip for Simon, you only need to crouch to hit enemies with his first two whips (and morning star will hit koopas without crouching). Flame whip has a large enough hit box to hit anything.

Nuh uh. Samus has the only gun that stuns (unless you count fireflower Link). I like her better than Bill 'cause her jump is a lot more controllable (once Bill is angled, he can't go straight down unless he hits something). Bill's power-ups turn him into an engine of destruction though. Overall, Megs just seems the best for most things. He doesn't really have any weak points.
Simon's a lot more fun in underground levels where you can just completely obliterate all the bricks in his path. He's so damn slow though, even when I do well with him, I find myself running out of time.

Hmm... yeah, I misremembered Bill and Megaman. Link's boomerang and sword stuns, though (regardless of how many power ups), and Simon's whip and axes stun. Not guns, true, buuut.
Also, nothing stuns Bowser, and Samus's limited range in her unpowered form makes the only enemies you really care if they get stunned a lot harder to kill. Even Simon has an easier time due to the axes if you stand in the right spot.
Also, Megs weakness is his jumps. He's got the worst jump power (good control, though), and he can't run for extra distance/height like Mario.

Anyway, this game is more fantastic than anything I've ever dreamed of. (Exaggeration.) Trying to use Link's air attacks is a DMC-like exercise in agility. I only wish they'd got rid of the stupid timer that never made sense in the first place for a home console game. Okay, there is if memory serves one or two levels where you have to hurry to beat the clock, but every other instance in every single game it's just an annoying stress element when you want to explore stuff.

y'might not believe me, but I almost pointed it out in my post on the first page. However, when I realized that the mistake wasn't just Metroid, but almost everything in the title, I figured it was intentional, so I clammed up on the matter to avoid sounding like a jerk or falling into the joke.

and Samus's limited range in her unpowered form makes the only enemies you really care if they get stunned a lot harder to kill.
Yeah, but the game allows you to conserve power-ups, so there's really not much reason to be going into a castle level without someone who has a mushroom already. Plus Samus is really good at getting over Bowser's head, and Link and Simon both have a ton of other flaws that Samus doesn't.
The Bowsers are all pretty easy anyway once you realise this version lets you move the screen left, whereas Bowser will always back up before he hits the end of his bridge, so he can never really corner you. I'll give you that Simon is really good for killing Bowser once you get him there though.
Edit: Not that any of this matters. I mean, are any of us playing a character just to make the game easier?
I only wish they'd got rid of the stupid timer that never made sense in the first place for a home console game. Link. Or rather, Super Mario, Link, Megaman, Samus, Bill R., and Simon. (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/534416)
Somebody made a flash game of the original Super Mario Bros, but you can play as:
- Mario
- Mega Man
- Link
- Samus Aran
- Bill (from Contra)
- Simon (from Castlevania)
Each character uses their own music and can do special moves, like Simon can break blocks with his whip and whatnot. Megaman can charge up and if he has a flower he shoots heatman's weapon. Samus can bomb jump, etc.
Pretty sweet. It's like all the awesome games from when you were young but mashed up into one.
And even better, they're going to be updating the game with everyone's favorite ninja... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zdr95SSgm2g)

So link can jump on enemies, and kill them instantly... Or jump-stab them with the sword, and they take three hits?
If they were to make everything a one-hit kill (except for Bill and Mega Man), and fix the jumping (for some characters if you try to jump immediately when you land, nothing happens, and this often means you die), AND fix the timing of the bullet bills and lakitu, this would be pretty solid.
As it is, 8-2 is just annoying to play.
Oh, and Link should grow up with a mushroom into Link from Zelda 2.
Krylo
05-28-2010, 05:48 AM
Link's downward stabbing is for dealing with enemies that can't be jumped on normally. Like those spiky bastards, piranha plants, and Bowser.
And the not being able to jump immediately when you land is on purpose for those characters, as that's how it worked in their original games.

You mean "maybe twice," right?
If they were to make everything a one-hit kill
It would be ridiculously easy.
The one thing that I'd say needs to be fixed is Mario's sudden inability to sprint across 1-tile pits, but who uses Mario anyway?

Actually, I was looking at it, and, while it looked really, really cool, simultaneously, I was thinking "man, that looks hard with Ryu's short jumps, and everything". I'm certain it won't be nearly as easy as that trailer made it look.

He's not as overpowered as he appears to be. There are limitations to his red shuriken, and his attacks are weak. And since he moves so fast, it's easy to make mistakes. I'm pretty good at video games, so I make it look like the game is a breeze with him. But trust me... it's not.
I think it'll be a lot of FUN with him at any rate.
