View Full Version : What a twist! Playing Natal makes you look like an idiot!

This is the dumbest goddamn thing I have ever seen. Like, as much as I'm certain Move is going to suck, this... this is so bad. Congratulations, Microsoft. You managed to make motion control look worse than ever Nintendo did.

As much of a non-fan of motion controls as I tend to be, I'm going to blame that scene less on Microsoft's technology and more on the fact that those people pretty much didn't know how to not look like idiots already.

Oh wait, it was a writer for Parade magazine and his family. No wonder they looked retarded.
Yeah, it's definitely not Microsoft's fault this time. Sorry, Nonsie.

I dunno man. They're doing what the game tells them to do, and the game is telling them to hop about the room and flail like an idiot. They might look dumber than your average person doing it, but I still don't see a way in which you can do that and not look dumb.

I agree, but I'm waiting to hold off judgment on just how idiotic and shitty I think the whole thing is until I see someone playing it that doesn't write for the world's most mindnumbing weekly publication.
I mean, it's definitely gonna be idiotic and shitty but come on.
TBH, I've actually never heard of Parade so yeah.

On the other hand, he ended up hitting his kid in the face, so maybe this will be ok after all. (http://www.parade.com/news/2010/06/06-how-i-became-an-avatar.html)
"We were playing Natal" is going to become the new "I fell down some stairs", I think.

What I don't get about this is if you want to move around and play games, what's wrong with actually getting a ball and going outside?

Well, you don't have to pay several hundred dollars for a ball, and then another 50 for every game you want to play with it. Besides, balls aren't the pinnacle of motion-sensor technology.

Well maybe YOUR balls aren't.

Today, I tried out the strangest remote control in history. It's huge -- 158 pounds and nearly six feet long -- which makes it hard to lose in the couch. It has no buttons and needs no batteries, which is nice. Plus, it's quite sleek-looking.
Okay, the remote is me.
Okay wow, to be honest I'd only heard of Parade from that one Family Guy episode where Stewie's future self reads Parade but that couple sentences made me angry.
The worst part is that the person who wrote this actually thought this was funny.
Fuck you, AJ Jacobs. EVEN IF NATAL WAS SOMEHOW GOING TO BE AWESOME IT NOW SUCKS BECAUSE FUCK YOU

I dunno about you but I don't wanna just play with balls all the time. Is it so unfathomable that some games don't involve balls at all, virtual or not?

Man, the best games involves balls and a stick!

This time though it makes a lot more sense, since both the real ball and Natal will eventually have you to hop about and flail like an idiot. :P

I dunno, there are some good ones where that stuff isn't really even involved.

No one wants to play the prepacked sports game, Preturbed, they want to play whatever shooter game uses this technology. Not sure what one that is since it'd have to be like, you hit bullets with your shield to ricochet it back at enemies or something?
Looks dumb, motion controls are not the future, they need holograms or holodecks or VR glasses or something.
By the way, for some reason I thought Natal was the PS3's big purple lollipop, what's that one called?
That one's called Move. It's mildly less dumb.

So is the horrible SIX-AXIS officially dead, then?
So is the horrible SIX-AXIS officially dead, then?
No. Games that use the regular controller will still abuse it like it's going out of style. Actually, there are some decent uses of SIX-AXIS.

I'm-a wait a second here.
OK.
Waving a plastic stick around is less retarded looking than free-range motion?
I'm assuming these people are just dumb and will not hop on this bandwagon until I see some real Natal use.

Seeing as I've yet to play a game for the Wii that requires me to run back and forth across the room, and maybe two that actually required me to stand... Yes, it is indeed less stupid looking. The majority of Wii games I've played have all had me either using the Wiimote as an aiming device, doing quick simple motions with the wiimote, or, on occasion, both. I get that it's cool to hate the Wii, because quite honestly its library is shit, but it really isn't half as bad as you make it sound. Unless of course I missed the thirty major titles for the console that somehow look dumber than the video I just watched.
I could also go into how the Wii actually gives you a device to interact with and buttons to press, giving the player more opportunity for finesse that I really don't see happening with Natal anytime soon.

The commercials and promotions for Wii controllers clearly show people standing around flailing about. The fact that it's easily figured out (simple wrist movements are all you need) on the couch doesn't mean people weren't and aren't shown to be silly looking while playing.
A guy and his family being retarded with their kids is hardly proof that a system is retarded. I'd rather see some video of how well the motion translates. Is it one to one? Is it wonky as shit?
If we're talking about doing movement = may as well go outside, word. I'm with you. But if we're just talking about quality of motion capture and control, I'm not sure I am.

Some? You mean there was more than 1 Heavy Rain game??
But yeah, that vid, that ain't gaming. That ain't gaming by a looong shot. I really do wish they'd just hurry up and release this crap already though, then everyone can go out and not buy it and Sony/Microsoft can see how nobody who plays their systems gives a damn about motion control.

Folklore did a decent enough job with it, I thought. I've also heard good things about Heavenly Sword or whatever it's called arrow aiming thing.
I'm hoping this fails in the market just as badly as the PSPGo, if not worse. (Assuming the tales I heard of the PSPGo bombing like crazy were indeed true)

I'm hoping this fails [...]
I think I want it to, too. That way all the gimmicky bullshit can stay on the Wii where it won't bother anyone.
This isn't to say motion-sensitive games are all gimmicky bullshit or bad, but the overwhelming rush to develop for these projects will inevitably deluge us with loads of tripe that no one really wants to play, aside from some kids who like to flounder about the room with pretty lights and music.

Are you sure it's people who play their systems that they're trying to appeal to?
