DDO (http://www.ddo.com/) is a free DnD based MMORPG. Basically the main reason I am making this thread is because I recently started playing the game, enjoying it so far, and I would like to party up with people I know more or less, ie. you. So how many of you lovely people play this game and would anyone be willing to play with me?

Please use this thread to discuss anything DDO related. I couldn't find any recent threads that were about DDO, based on thread titles.

Gimme a month, and I might squeez some DDO between three other MMO's I play, catching up with my Xbox games, and trying out Shineys new RO server...

Yep, I got that much free time on my hands. :sweatdrop

I was playing it for a bit, but I had to take a break then my brother never started playing it again. I enjoyed, once I have time I'll probably start playing it again. I was a Dwarf Cleric, and a Warforged Barbarian. The Cleric is actually really fun to play which was interesting. I haven't gotten very far in it. I did enjoy the level up system. 20 levels with 4 tiers each was cool. Combat's pretty cool. My characters aren't to high yet either though, so it's all good.

Or I'll trying LotRO when they make the move to free-to-play that they announced would happen soon. They're both made by Turbine and they said since they went Free-to-play with DDO they increased their overall customer base so it's nice to see that.

I played it back when it was subscription based and it was probably the second best MMO I've had the pleasure of participating in. Of course, I hit level cap within 3 months and then it got permanently dry.

Or I'll trying LotRO when they make the move to free-to-play that they announced would happen soon.I know you mean Lord of the Rings Online but the first thought that crossed my mind when I saw this was "That's a funny name for an RO server...."

Clearly I've been playing RO too long.

I had a lot of fun with it, but as my friends stopped playing it I did. Even though some consider it heresy if I play any MMO but EVE, I wouldn't mind playing.

I guess I should've mentioned that my accounts name is Osterbaum and my current chraracters name is Yoel Lasikari, currently playing in Ghallanda.

I might look into this in a few weeks, but I just bought a copy of FFXI a week ago, and that comes with a month of play for free. Depending on how I feel about the game at the end of that month, I may try out DDO >.>

I tried not long after it went free-to-play. I had a lot of fun, but as with any mmo for me, no friends to play with it was probably the biggest reason I
decided to drop it at the time. Will definitely pick it up again when I find time to tear myself away from persona 3.

Could really use some more or less permanent (or frequent) party members, that way it's easier to get on alot of the quests.

I dunno bout tonight, but I could totally get in on this if we all start characters on the same server and have an NPF guild or something (Note: name does not have to be related to NPF, just saying, it'd be cool to have a bunch of us playing together).

Osterbaum
06-09-2010, 06:24 PM
It would be cool. I'm totally up for it. We could use this thread to see who's interested and if we get a few people then even see abit what classes people want to be. The classes available are Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Sorcerer, Cleric, Wizard, Ranger, Rogue, Bard and buyable are the Monk and Favoured Soul. Races available are Human, Elf, Halfling, Dwarf and buyable are Warforged and Drow. Personally I'm open to being almost any class, although I do have some preferences.

This week I wont be having much time to play anymore, but next week I'll propably have more time again.

So which was the server everybody is on now? I have a lvl4 Ranger on Ghallanda.

The paths kinda suck from what I've seen. I started off with pathing and my characters started losing viability around level 3. Customized they've just been getting better. My rogue is level 2 now and has +5 to both weapons and nearly 60 hit points already.

Rolled a wizard I've been playing for a couple days now and judging from the reviews of my fellow Sects Buddies, it looks like she's my new main

Kept my old bard's name Oliviere to avoid confusion (and because I really like the name).

We need more heals though, so far we've been operating on the principle of the best defense is to skullfuck the opposition.

Edit: Putting a list together so Oster has an easier time placing it in the first post.
So far it looks like we have:
Krogoth-Warforged Barbarian
Osterbaum-Human Ranger and Human Paladin
Wigmund-Human Fighter/Barbarian
Terex4-Halfling Wizard and Human Rogue/Fighter
Corel-Dwarf Ranger and Cleric (no clue what race)
Steel Shadow-Human Rogue
Grimpond-Human Cleric

So far Grimpond is the only one with officer status so I guess he's the only one who can recruit at the moment. His character is Grimskathe.
Bard-Sorcerer with connection issues pending

A Dwarf Ranger with an eye-patch. Silly things like Depth perception won't stop him!

Was going to get back on tonight but the wife wanted to spend some time with me (not a common request she lets me have my game time).

I have discovered that spell casters function much the same way in DDO as they do in tabletop. You feel like an exp leech at lower levels except for the few encounters where you really get to shine. Next stop level 5 and an actual contribution to groups!

I'd like to take this time to give a shout out to Krogoth, Wigmund, Grimpond, and Steel Shadow who at this point, I'm sure, keep an empty slot in their inventories just for my soul stone.

Great! Looking at the list on the first post we've got around:

Four Melee
Two healers (Decided to make my main Cleric)
Two casters

I would say you've got choice on what you want to do. I would say more meat shields could never hurt for me and Grim to heal up if you really are undecided.

Oh yeah to reiterate, Cleric's name is Arcellia Roth. :) If you want even more details on the class she's mostly a Buffer/Healer, Grim is a more offensive Cleric than I am.

So you guys think I should go with the Longbow favoring Ranger or Longsword & Shield favoring Paladin? Ranger is lvl4 while Paladin is only lvl2, so I think I'd be using the Ranger atleat until I can catch up with the Paladin a bit. But on the long run, which do you think would be a better addition to the team?

From what I've read currently bow dps is extremely weak for the time being. An Arcane Archer build bring sit up significantly if that's the path you pursue and I've heard nothing but good things about it. This is not to mention that bows could be buffed in a future patch. The ranger sounds like it would be more fun.

Paladins bring more utility to the group with their buffs and lay on hands (full heal effect on warforged) but is probably going to be less fun to play than your ranger. Also as a long time tabletop player I cringe around paladins anyway as I prefer to avoid the Lawful Anal.

I'm generally all purpose. I've been snatching up as many spells as I can and don't plan on specializing (spell focus feats). I generally run around with aoe and crowd control spells + mage armor. Utilitarian spells like knock I plan to stock up on scrolls of since they aren't really worth having on finger.

Shaman in general can stop targeting me, the squishy thief, and aim at the big meatsheilds swinging axes or rakes around.

This game is actually better than I remembered. There are puzzles I'd expect to see in a genuine adventure game, rather than an MMO. I couldn't resist buying a ViP account to get all of it. And being a trap detector/disarmer/lockpicker/backstabber/acrobat is fun. Even if my role in groups seems to mainly consist of yelling that there's a trap 2 seconds after the Tank's wandered into it...

I am having no trouble soloing the Korthos quests as a bard, that Im pretty sure I built wrong. Is this game that easy all the way through? or just on Normal

krogothwolf

Kortho's is really easy. It gets more difficult later on.

Everything that isn't a (pure) caster can solo the entire Korthos line on every difficulty.

Edit: There is one quest that, if memory serves, you can actually go all the way through without actually fighting a single enemy if you are a rogue.

Korthos is basically meant as an extended tutorial run to allow new players to get used to the play mechanics and gain a lvl or two before moving on to Stormreach.

My fighter has hit level 6, so to slow his progression down I've started a backup character - Jezikiyah Purge: Dwarf Rogue/eventually Wizard.

I've also started a cleric as my sort of backup character. Will be playing him mostly when none of you are online.

On another note, I might be online later today.

To follow in this new trend, I too have made a new character (replacing my ranger.)

Catara Roth, whom is a Paladin (As we kind of need more tanks). Will probably rotate between this character and the Cleric depending on the levels of everybody.

Steel Shadow

Trogs can go to hell. As can slimes (damnit, how many weapons did I break?!?). But the traps and the jumping? Those were awsome!

You actually did the pit? :3: I'm positive I remember that one from years past being basically impossible to find a group for, because everyone was terrified of it!

Now that I've had the evening to recover from that virgin programmer's revenge we call "The Pit" I'm ready to post some screenshots. These are technically spoilers so if you plan to run it and want to be surprised you've been warned.

Sadly there are some rooms that I didn't get any shots of, we were so busy dying, crying, and running around looking for shrines we'd already hit at least 6 times prior because this place is a twisted maze built from the remains of drowned puppies.

This place is full of jump puzzles and running on pipes. Dwarves are fail jumpers.
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/7843/screenshot00000g.th.jpg (http://img269.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00000g.jpg/)

This is the other side of those "platforms" from the previous shot. I was nowhere near the top.
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/8827/screenshot00001z.th.jpg (http://img130.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00001z.jpg/)

Still not to the top, we had to rely on non archers with bows to take down some of the super powered trogs running around this dungeon. The chat logs are also not an accurate representation as about half of what we were saying was over the voice chat.
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/9075/screenshot00002x.th.jpg (http://img163.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00002x.jpg/)

You can barely see the bottom of the room if you look hard enough.
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/1673/screenshot00003s.th.jpg (http://img638.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00003s.jpg/)

This is not a shot to show how high up we were (although it demonstrates that nicely) but rather to show the slim pipe we have to run across and jump to the pipes to the left. With one point in tumble that's an 80+ hp drop.
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/3410/screenshot00004u.th.jpg (http://img156.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00004u.jpg/)

This dungeon is not for anyone who's afraid of heights.
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/6760/screenshot00005w.th.jpg (http://img705.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00005w.jpg/)

The main thing to note in this screenshot is our new quest objective. Yes they want us to ARM the TRAPS.
http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/9664/screenshot00006d.th.jpg (http://img704.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00006d.jpg/)

This is a picture of the main corridor. Its basically built as two ramps winding around two pillars in a mobeus strip style. Once we finish our current objective those pillars will fire cones of force at us as we make our way around to the other rooms (and shrines)
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/5420/screenshot00007x.th.jpg (http://img101.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00007x.jpg/)

Story of our lives...
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/4750/screenshot00008a.th.jpg (http://img85.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00008a.jpg/)

And back to the furnace rooms. All 3 furnace puzzles involve tightrope skills on pipes with trog mages shooting you with acid and fire and magic missiles.
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8737/screenshot00009o.th.jpg (http://img156.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00009o.jpg/)

This room was fun. Bolts of lightning fire in different directions while you run around each pillar to throw 3 switches each. All of these traps except the force cones of the main corridor hit for at least 20 ,if not significantly more, points of damage.
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/8340/screenshot00010f.th.jpg (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00010f.jpg/)

More pipes.
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/7177/screenshot00011n.th.jpg (http://img683.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00011n.jpg/)

This part was really cool. The object is to get a few people to stand on the steam pipe and have someone pull the valve to jettison the sucke...ahem...volunteers as high as the ceiling way way up.
http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/9867/screenshot00012q.th.jpg (http://img63.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00012q.jpg/)

And there goes our faithful rogue. Seriously we could not have done this dungeon without you Steel
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/470/screenshot00013.th.jpg (http://img171.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00013.jpg/)

Steel doing what he does best. All our work for us.
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/3083/screenshot00015jb.th.jpg (http://img39.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00015jb.jpg/)

Wigmund was the only other one of us competent enough to keep up with Steel, so he often found himself playing bodyguard.
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/6148/screenshot00016t.th.jpg (http://img203.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00016t.jpg/)

Did what I could to capture the action up there, but I suck at landing the steam catapult so I stayed at ground floor.
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/4343/screenshot00017g.th.jpg (http://img651.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00017g.jpg/)

Steel finds a second valve jump up above, this method never actually panned out for us and he took to using the first valve to get where he needed to go.
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/1386/screenshot00018w.th.jpg (http://img691.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00018w.jpg/)

And the last shot of the set, Steel continuing to flaunt his jumping skills. Pretty sure he's giving me the finger from up there.
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/6014/screenshot00019f.th.jpg (http://img266.imageshack.us/i/screenshot00019f.jpg/)

I wasn't able to get the last part of the dungeon, at that point I was mashing my recall button to get the hell out. Many of the rooms involved respawns and in the case of the third furnace room, those of us who stayed below had to deal with constant waves of trogs and black puddings so we weren't having a picnic while Steel did all the work.

Dungeon Statistics:
Deaths: Too many to count
Shrine Uses: See Deaths
People Getting Lost: All of us, multiple times
Deaths by Lava: Nearly all of us at the very start. There wasn't even a reason to go down to the lava...
# of times we said Fuck: Pretty sure we beat Scarface here. Most of these times were in conjunction with the words "me" and "Jesus".
Quality of Treasure: Shit
Repair Bills: My personal repair bill was over 5000 gold at least.

So the pit was a bundle of joy. In fact I was lucky enough to capture some screenshots of the first part leading up to Terex's screenshots.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00022.jpg

So this is us in a previous dungeon doing what we do best: For a quick run down on us we've got Catara (Me), Orson (Wigmund), Terexe (Terex4) and Solomas (Steel_Shadow) we make a pretty bad ass team. However I don't think we were kinda prepared for what was going to take place for the next 4-5 hours.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00023.jpg

After a short gaping at the giant chasms, we found a ladder.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00024.jpg

Boy is this a big ladder, moments before this photo was taken I see Wigmund go flying down the chasm. He mentions something about lava in the chat? Lava? I can't see an-

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00025.jpg

Oh. Here it is.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00026.jpg

With some Oozes waiting for us! (Which are creatures that destroy your weapons)

In the end we discovered there was actually no point coming down here, so went to the generator room.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00027.jpg

Which led us to this pretty cool puzzle. Basically 9 switches corrensponding to 9 lights on the wall. Flipping a switch would turn the adjacent lights on/off etc. In this mean time we were being attacked by Trogs.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00030.jpg

Just to reiterate what Terex said, there were two main pillar that spiralled down to different rooms, as shown here.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00031.jpg

...and suddenly we're on pipes off the ground!

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00033.jpg

Did we mention that we were being shot at when trying to turn the levers on? All I heard at this time was Steel_Shadow saying "Oh fuck!" into the microphone and then me bursting out laughing at the calamity of it all (which was the general theme of the night).

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00036.jpg

Remember those pictures again of Terex saying how large the furnace was? Well here it is, can't even see the ceiling.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00038.jpg

After turning the traps on, it caused the entire level to have sonic traps turned on.

http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af125/Tremare_Bucket/ScreenShot00042.jpg

Lastly, here is Solomas in action getting launched up into the air via the steam pipe.

The rest of the quest is basically what Terex has posted already. Would like to thank the guys who made this adventure possible (Steel_shadow, Wigmund, Terex and later Grimpond) as I'm sure we would've never have made it through alive without supporting eachother.

I've dubbed this quests Tomb of Horrors 2.0; Would like to do it again at a later level on hard (won't be as bad seeing as we now know what to do...basically)

I think we should do The Tears of Dhakaan quest in House Phiarlan. I tried to do some it on Casual (...and I ended up running out of healing potions and getting killed by hobgoblin spellcasters) and I managed to find a +3 Mithril Shirt, so on Normal with a full party there should be plenty of good shit for us to loot.

I just died in the Butcher's Path, but within range of a Resurrection shrine... or so I thought. As it turned out, I died exactly far enough from the shrine that no matter how efficiently I ran I would only just make it close enough to reach it and be yanked back before I could resurrect.

That is a bigger kick in the teeth than Proof In The Poison, I think.

EDIT: Alright, so I bought the adventure pack that unlocks the Steam Tunnels and such with all the Turbine Points I earned. That unlocks it for me on every server, right? 'cause if it does, then I'm probably going to go insane with altitis for favor farming.

Wigmund
07-21-2010, 10:22 PM
So apparently there's a Winter Carnival going on now in DDO. There's a ski jump in the Harbor and an ice skating rink with half pipes in a House P tavern. Pity they're near impossible to use.

Roland
07-21-2010, 11:10 PM
Nah, see, what you need to do is farm the two white ice coins that can only be gotten by failing miserably at the ice jump in the Harbor instances.

When you get ten of them, you trade them to a new NPC for rental ice skates, which make the ice jumps and skating rinks actually usable.

But you only get these rental skates for ten minutes, so you need to work your butt off to get ten more white ice coins while also trying to get blue and purple ice coins.

If that sounds like too much work, you can always just buy permanent ice skates from the DDO Store.

Did I mention these ice skates are completely useless for anything other than these two limited time only features, and that unless you've figured out the mechanics for the ice jump you're likely to get less ice coins period using the skates than you are just grinding white ice coins to buy said skates in the first place?

And that all of this, beyond just being for fun's sake, is really just so you can potentially get either a Cold Burst magic effect placed on a weapon you'll probably abandon when a better one comes along, or if you're a magic user an Eternal Ray of Frost Wand that only does 6-8 damage per hit?

... so yeah, it's not actually worth it at all. And in other news, I have characters on about five or six servers now, most of which only exist to grind out 100 Favor so I can earn another 125 Turbine Points per server. I've also been playing my Khyber character (A Cleric, named Larachel, because every name I want to take is already taken) more than my Ghallanda characters recently.

So, I remembered that since I just bought Turbine Points (which I spent on Tangleroot Gorge, bringing my Adventure Pack purchases up to Five), I now have a Premium Account and thus can have up to four characters per server.

So now there's a Drow Rogue named Scheherazade* running around Korthos.

EDIT: So I got suckered into buying the Ice Skates (95 Turbine Points!), and now I'm trying for a +5 Eternal Wand of Ray of Frost. I need 400 Winter Motes and 4 Recipe 2/20 cards for it, though. Such a pain...

*Because Misadventure was taken.

Roland
08-13-2010, 07:18 PM
Man, it's been a long time since anybody's posted in this thread. I know double posts are frowned upon, but...

I just learned a valuable lesson today. If, perhaps, you get lucky and find a +1 CON Tome on the auction house for a genuinely reasonable value, buy it, and trade it over to a new toon who can't quite use it yet, you want to put that thing in the bank right away.

Why? Because some ****ing punk cultist on Korthos is totally going to destroy it when he hits you for a grand total of 0 damage while you're trying to rest if you happen to have it in your inventory.

So yeah, don't carry valuable, hard to replace stuff. Ever.

Update on character stuffs:
-Scheherazade was rerolled, she's a Bard now.
-Larachel is gone.
-I play on Khyber almost exclusively now. My main toon there is a level 14 cleric named... Larachel. Yeah.
-I bought a crapload of adventure packs, so now I can possibly join people in on some of those one day.
EDIT, EVERYTHING BELOW POSTED ON THE 19TH
-Oh yeah, and new toon on Ghallanda: Adamantitan. Level 7 Warforged Fighter, in his own guild, etc.

Also, today I ran The Pit for the third time. The reason I feel this is notable? It was the first time with this toon, and it was the first time I became the de facto leader of the group as I was apparently the only one in it that had run it before.

It may have been a disaster and it took us nearly three and a half hours, but it was still by far a better run than my first go 'round.

This thread isn't that old. My roommate started playing DDO and it made me miss it. The main reason I quit playing was because everyone I knew quit playing it. So I am going to start back up.

Pyros can't do much on DnD, becuase not only am I poor, but the damn DDO store doesn't work for me, and every fix they have one the forums doesn't work. Why can't they have the Aeria model, where there's an in-game store, but you can also purchase content at the website?

There's a reason why I have a Raido Kuzunoha outfit in Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine, and absolutely f'ing NOTHING in DDO. :argh:

=/ Haven't played it in around 4 weeks now, actually.

Yes! It was a monthly special, and I got his hat and outfit! You could also get the school uniform from if. That, and I have Lupin the third's gun, which isn't a Shin Megami Tensei property, but when it's the gun he uses and it refers to the gun as being the preferred gun of a famous thief...

I know thread necromancy is frowned upon, but I don't feel like making another DDO topic when we already have a perfectly serviceable topic right here and now.

So, I have gotten back into DDO again. So much so that I may have screwed up my wrist. Ow.

CURRENT CHARACTERS:
Ghallanda:
Scheherazade - LV6 Drow Bard
Adamantitan - LV10 Warforged Fighter -> Sole member of One Warforged Wonder

Khyber:
Larachel - LV17/1 Cleric/Fighter -> Officer in War Bound
Belinde - LV10 Fighter -> Member of... some guild. WILL EDIT IN LATER MAYBE
Djuste - LV6 Human Bard

Also, Mabar Endless Night happened apparently. And it's happening again today apparently. I have no idea what it is but it's free to play and it sounds like fun.

Drow bard? Drow with musical talents? That seems almost blasphemous...

every race needs a bard. They don't have to be musicians, they can be public speakers, poets, storytellers, anything you want really

Hi, I'm Drgon. I'm a bard fan.

Alright, so Sunday at midnight the Mabar event ends, just fyi guys.

The craftable stuff is really worth it, but only if you already have a level 20 toon.

Speaking of which, just hit level 18 with Larachel, so yeah. I may very well see her to the level cap. Might even start running Shroud with her.

EDIT: Well, just ran my first Shroud ever. It went pretty well overall, despite a crapload of deaths during the puzzle phase and nearly wiping on Harry.

EDIT MY EDIT: And now I just had my first two runs through Stealer of Souls. I learned some things.

-Make sure the wizard in the group has Web for the Earth section. Otherwise it becomes a nasty mosh pit of death.
-Make sure somebody has Freedom of Movement and Break Enchantment for the Ice section. Otherwise it's a hoedown of hilarious carnage.
-Make sure everyone gets Fire Resist, there's a Monk or Rogue in the party, and for gods' sakes kill the red djinni types first in the Fire section, or it's a fiesta of blood and tears.
-The air section is probably pretty bad too, but we didn't get that far on either attempt. I imagine it's a concert of... of not fun.

So, Festivult is back. So far it's just the copper/silver/gold coins dropping, but sooner or later that Jester's going to show up.

And maybe the Ice Games'll return, too.

Ok, so I started playing a bit today, and remember why I dislike it (in order)
1) no one parties up for normal level stuff. Its tough to solo your way through as a bard!
2) every quest so far has been "go here, kill them, come back, get reward" MY HIGH CHARISMA IS USELESS! except for charm person, I guess.

Aldurin

A bard? I would recommend going either fighter, barbarian or ranger until you could pretty much adapt to proper ass-kicking styles for every class.

I'm currently using a wizard and a multi-classed ranger, but only because I'm comfortable with slashing, shooting and casting in any given order.

DarkDrgon
12-09-2010, 10:29 PM
nothings been hard, I just prefer to be in a group to playing solo. if I'm on an MMO, making my processor scream to deal with all these people, the least I could do is actually interact with them.

also: FUCK YOU!!! bards are the best class. fact.

Bards are indeed the best class. They're like the PS3 classes. The only do everything.

... seriously though: A well built Bard in this game is pretty amazing. Neither of my Bards are well built, sadly. =/

Anywho, restarted Batta the Beast on Ghallanda as a level 1 Barbarian, in case there's any grouping to be wanted.

So, what you guys can tell me about this? Any Tips for a complete, clueless, newbie?

Here's what I did, I made a sorcerer, stumbled around like a complete idiot for a few days before I switched to fighter and got myself oriented.

Basically what I'm saying is when you are at character creation, go what becomes highlighted when you hit the "recommended" button. Then be sure to keep items until you are absolutely sure you don't need them.

If you become curious about something you should go to the compendium on the website, it will provide detailed information about all classes, races, spells and I think certain item effects. Also pay attention to the tips that pop up during area transitions.

You may feel like ditching and rebuilding your character, if so then look into what you want to do first and then make your decision.

But definitely make sure to check out the classes and races in the compendium because that will be the biggest help.

RobinStarwing
12-10-2010, 07:10 PM
I did that, checking out the on site compendium and waiting till I got a better setup for my Netbook (which can run DDO) but thinking of doing either a Human/Elf/Half-Elf Sorcerer (I always believed Natural Power trumps Power that is Given/Learned).

So, in just over 11 hours, Update 8 and Festivult begin!

What Update 8 is supposedly bringing: New quests, various buffs and nerfs and fixes for various things, and "customizable armor", which in DDO translates to... selling the players a handful of cosmetic skins to load up over their armor instead of any real customization. So it's yet another "underwater combat", if anyone remembers the ads for Update 6.

Anywho, have taken to playing a Half-Orc Wizard on Khyber, named Shangrea (wanted to go with Sangria, but evidently all shades of red have been covered). And then I started writing about her, because I'm crazy like that.

Had my third Vault of Night run tonight. Like always, it goes like this.

VoN 5 runs semi-smoothly, few hiccups, etc. We had 14 deaths but that's okay. It's okay. Things are running okay.

Cue VoN 6. Party leader gives clear instructions on what to do at each base. We're to let one of the monks get aggro on Ice, let the Bard fascinate everything, prep the pillar to 10%, and then move on. Three people were supposed to stay here (Cleric, Rogue, Barbarian).

We get to Mephits and two things go wrong. First, one of the wizards started throwing down walls of fire instead of letting the monk get aggro and the bard fascinate. Second, the Barbarian followed us instead of staying at Ice. Still, we managed to pull through, and it was time to move on to Fire.

We get to Fire, Monk grabbs aggro and Bard fascinates. The Barbarian from Ice has followed us all the way to Fire, though, and thus Ice doesn't have the dps to take down their pillar. The flensers on Ice break free and kill them. Mephits lose their fascinate too, and more deaths. Group leader starts chewing out the Barbarian, and tells one of the Favored Souls to rez everyone. Literally the exact moment the cleric was rezzed, group leader starts chewing him out for not being on Ice. Yeah...

So anyways, we regrouped at the start. We've got 33 minutes left, we can still do it, yeah? Nope, group leader spends the next three minutes swearing up a storm. Eventually he gets to the point where he's screaming into his mic. I jump off the platform, recall out, and drop group.

Found out later from a guild member who was also in the group that they succeeded in getting to Velah, but wiped in about 15 seconds. The healers (there were about three of them, one cleric and two favored souls) were told to hide behind a specific rock where Velah wouldn't hit them. They did. Velah sniped them anyways, then wiped out everyone else.

In other news, I've finally started my own DNG List. That guy is now on it.

Aldurin
12-16-2010, 02:12 AM
I should probably do that too, on the Sarlona server I found a paladin on the catacombs run the seemed okay, then I noticed that all he did was block in the presence of enemies and use the pally lay-on-hands heal thing. I asked why he just blocked, as it was ineffective for protecting us since he wasn't doing damage and couldn't intimidate undead, and he replied that he was a tank. I figured he was having a stupid moment and dismissed it until we had enough skeletons on our ass that paladin melee would have helped. So I start telling him to stop blocking and start attacking, and he keeps insisting he's a tank. The argument continues until he says his build has 8 strength and thus a -7 attack modifier.

If I see that guy again on the lfm I'm not letting him join.

And you von raids sound a lot like how half of my Tempest's Spine runs go, but with enough complexity to actually warrant slight idiocy without instruction. I seriously get pissed when half the group doesn't know what to do on the Fire and Ice optional and half the group gets killed in ice while the giants chase down everyone else. Especially since I'm the wiz who's so self-buffed that I shouldn't die unless I'm forced to solo with my summons and I end up failing a save on Destruction.

So yeah, the upside of DDO is the constant multiplayer that makes things easier for everybody as they share the pain, the downside is other players, specifically those who think they know how to do something or believe that charging ahead is both the fastest and safest option.

I still play anyway.

So, before I further consider getting involved in the game, is it truly free-to-play, or is it one of those F2Ps that is actually pay-to-win?

I can't necessarily devote the time I once did to MMOs, so it's got to be the kind where I can jump in from time to time, not feel hopelessly outdated or lost, can still hang with friends, and if I should happen to feel like dumping money into it, good... and if not, also good.

Aldurin
12-17-2010, 10:34 AM
I don't think it's play-to-win, though I might be wrong. I'm up to level 11 with my Wizard and there have been many available quests despite the large amount of purchasable adventure packs. If it does become obvious that there aren't enough quests near top level then you can always use the mere pittance of Turbine points you get for build "quest favor" to buy some extra stuff. All I've bought so far with the free points I've gained is the catacombs pack and the Shan-To-Kor pack. But those were low level.

You're options involving monetary sacrifice are either buying a set amount of points (I don't recommend doing this if you want everything, as buying most quest packs would probably be upwards of $50) which has the benefit of promoting you to premium status so you get two extra character slots for free. The other option is a $15 a month VIP subscription that is discounted for longer periods, this gives you full access to all races/classes/adventure packs and you get 1000 points a month for buying the other stuff.

Or you should at the very least make an account and sign up for the DDO lottery before the end of the month. First place gets 100k points (said to be worth about $1000, and is enough to buy everything twice) and several second place winners get subscriptions for life (free VIP benefits plus 12k points per year, worthwhile if you want to play in the long run).

So, Batta's hit level 6. Right now he's swinging around the Antique Greataxe from the Phiarlan Carnival line.

Anywho, once I hit level 7 I'm going to look into starting up an at-level (read: 5-7) group for the Chronoscope. It's part of the Devil Assault adventure pack for those that are interested.

EDIT: And now he's level seven. I've picked up a +1 True Chaos of Pure Good Quarterstaff (which, oddly enough, he can wield without penalties despite being Chaotic Neutral) for the raid. Now I/we just need to settle on a day and time, maybe.

A few days ago I decided that, since I bought the 32-Point Build and had gathered a decent amount of Monk equipment, I'd roll a Monk. And thus Shangria Dragonstomper, a Halfling Monk, was born. She's level 8 now, nearing level 9.

So, earlier today I joined a group to run The Pit on Normal, and we completed with no deaths, one hiccup (I got lost for a bit, and ended up soloing the Bilge Control Room), and one piker (a lazy bum who wants the XP without doing anything to help the group). I even managed to clear the third furnace so quickly (via taking the first air lift directly to the top) that one of the party members was in disbelief over how fast I'd done so.

Just about an hour ago, I decided to farm the Avatar of Juiblex to see if I can get a Muck's Doom. Instead...

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk269/BattaTheBeast/DDO%20Collection/Shangria_PitSolo.jpg

Turns out the one part I thought you needed a second man for (turning the valve in the third furnace) can be done solo. Didn't even need a hireling.

EDIT: Also, I've given up entirely on running the Chronoscope at level. Yes, the XP is very good for a level 6 quest, even taking into account that it's a raid. Yes, it's challenging, but entirely doable without even a single death at level. Yes, smart playing and being able to follow instructions will reduce the stress and resource burning to a minimum.

So why shouldn't it be run at level? Well, there's two ways you can do a Chronoscope run. You can resign yourself to piking while a level 20 or three do the entire quest themselves, or you can take your chances with up to eleven people who, even if they're TRs, might very well have no ****ing clue about how to play the game beyond "there is enemy, ME SMASH!".

Bonus points to the sorcerers and wizards who think they're so awesome because they know Wall of Fire. In a quest where everything is immune to fire. And yet they never stop to check if their spells are actually doing damage... *headdesk*

Even after completing an at-level Chrono run with Scheherazade (who I rerolled, yet again, now she's an Elven 5/2/1 Bard/Ranger/Fighter... yes, I'm insane) and pulling two Abishai equips, I still maintain that Chronoscope should not be run at-level unless you have a lot of time, patience, and plat for repairs and such.

24 deaths in that run, even without any party wipes.

Right now she's sporting a pair of True Chaos/Pure Good Scimitars, a Silver Longbow (+2 Holy but not Silver at all, go figure), and has so far taken the Arcane Archer PrE for infinite/free pew pew pew action.

Also Manyshot rules.

Chronoscope is a bitch, the only times I've actually made it through was one overleveled run when everything was cut by 50% and several loot runs with level 20 favored souls for healers. Every at-level group I've tried finds it shitfully hard to do as soon as they get access to the entire marketplace area.

Roland
01-08-2011, 07:16 PM
... and just now I completed another Chronoscope Run, this time on Hard, in an at-level party. We had a grand total of 8 or so deaths, most of them from the big boss and his AoE attacks.

I really do not get this quest. One day you've got the worst group in the world, then three days later it's a near-smooth run.

EDIT: Also, Scheherazade is up to 4 Abishai items now: Helm of Frost, Envenomed Cloak, Charged Gauntlets (which don't work at all with a bow, lame), and Scorched Bracers. All that's left are the Boots of Corrosion.

I just went throught the most interesting run of Frame Work (a.k.a. Minotaur Genocide). I was sporting my lich shroud wizard and got into a party with four tanks and a healer. Things should have gone smoothly.

The party was coordinating like a bunch of monkeys on LSD. The tanks scattered and the healer would hardly move and complain about how everyone was out of range. Fortunately I wasn't dependent on the healer and was hopped up on enough buffs that I half-soloed the quest using death aura, necrotic bolt and mass suggestion to keep the enemy in check. Right before the boss half of the group died and we spent five minutes getting together and resurrected. I then asked if anyone could rogue to get the traps right before the boss, and it turned out the healer had part rogue.

So then we prepare to wait for the traps to be done then suddenly the gate to the boss opens and the three tanks rush (one got lost in the wilderness area for some reason and died later). The healer still tries to get the traps and it becomes a huge fiasco where I can barely keep the crowd under control as tanks scatter when they get aggroed. The healer apparently gets trapped by six enemies and dies, then all but one tank die. Once the bosses are down I gather up the stones and take them to the res shrine. I then loot the chest and leave to let them deal with their own disorganized crap.

During that WHOLE quest I didn't die once, or even come close to dying. And I was the one wiping out large groups of minotaurs on my own or at least damaging them to the point where a tank would come in and kill them all in one hit.

That run sucked, but at least I got the loot and xp. I almost felt like idiot-listing the whole group but figured it was mostly a bad combination of 5 almost tolerable idiots instead of competence and idiots.

Recently it's come to my attention that the Devil Assault quest is actually worth running now. On Normal and Hard you can pull some pretty nice DR Breakers. On Hard, Elite, and Epic, crafting ingredients from the Shroud and the Shavarath quests can be pulled as well.

So now I'm taking my massively overleveled Khyber Monk through it on Normal, effortlessly stomping everything, and trying in vain to get said awesome drops. So far, no luck.

So, coming soon is Update "8.1", which is more or less an anniversary event. It's got pirates and more crafting and what not.

For example: You get a pirate hat that can be upgraded to eventually have one of the following:
+6 (Stat)
Superior False Life (40 HP, I think)
+5 Natural Armor AC
Superior Potency VI
Seeker +6
Sneak Attack +5 (+5 to hit, +8 damage on any sneak attack)
Archmagi (+200 SP, 400 SP for a Sorcerer/Favored Soul)

In addition to that, said pirate hat can also have up to +15 to any Skill except Use Magic Device (on the grounds that UMD is ridiculously powerful and even epic items try not to have more than +3 to UMD).

Said event is already live on the Lamannia server (the public testing server, apparently), s'yeah.
