So... Excited or Sonic Cycle?Since you gave us a choice, Sonic Cycle. I have absolutely no faith in Sonic Team to even build an engine where pressing a button, any button, that they don't expect will send you flying through the ground or just cause you to inexplicably die. Since every game since Sonic Adventure has suffered from this, I don't expect it's high on their priorities to fix, and I've had enough of it.
Yes, I know the 16-bit games were also buggy.

Sonic Cycle.
They've kept very quite about it so that means either it's fine or they messed up real bad and are hoping no one notices when it's released.
It's only on Wii and DS. The DS version plays a bit like the Sonic Rush Games.

They just need to distill Sonic to its purest essence. A simulation where you wiggle analog sticks and mash buttons to make Sonic have seizures and phase through solid objects at lightning speed, all the while spewing incessant Engrish.

Well, it at least looked like it was easy enough to play.
Not that I've got much stake in Sonic, since I didn't have any consoles until high school and grew up without him, but from a purely outside view, either the player knew how to put on a very good show or the game controls well. Hearing what I have about Unleashed's day levels, I'll lean toward the latter.
Well, it at least looked like it was easy enough to play.
Maybe I'm just getting old but there were times in that demo that I didn't even know what was going on. Sonic would just inexplicably disappear in a haze of light and end up somewhere else. Plus I don't know how hard it is to control that tunneling move, but having seen all those rings underground, I think it would irk me to not be able to get them as I went blasting by.

I think that was Sonic turning into a laser and being carried through pipes or wires of some sort.

Damn, Mario is gonna have to up his crazy moves to compete with Mr. Blue.
If it was any other game series I would automatically assume that it was a retarded kids version to teach 4 year-olds their colors (even though they would be swearing through mics while playing Halo instead). I'll probably buy it immediately if it has a great turnout and if not I'll wait for it to come up in a pawn shop for $20 or new for $30.
And whoever was playing that gameplay video is a retard in terms of competent sonic gaming. I would probably have gotten hurt half as many times at most and I would have done better with the drilling, without the tutorial (hell, half of america's competent gamers could do better.)
I like the top-rated comment for the gameplay video though.
that yellow drill makes mario? galaxy 2's spin drill look like a fisher price toy.

Blue power: Lazer
It allows you to travel through wires (basically warping to a different part of the stage).
If you use it during the 3D sections. You get light speed attack from the Adventure games. Only you can actually aim it.

So I could actually avoid the Pinwheel of Doom.

Yes because he moves forward in a Zig zag pattern.
Actually it's more of a straight line but he can bounce off of any walls that he hits (ala Zig zag pattern).

I'm trying to figure out why Sonic endures as one of the most classic and recognizable video game characters at this point after only, really, a handful of games that rank as decent and even less that rank as good.
Loved that saturday morning cartoon though. Maybe that's it?

I think it's because you can't find many other characters that have such positive personalities while having abnormal abilities.

Can Sonic outrun our speed-addicted society? No matter how fast you run or how much coffee you have to quaff to get through the day, there's always room for more. There's no upper limit to productivity. You can work eighteen hours a day and consume nonstop and until you die of a heart attack art 35, it'll never be enough.
Does Sonic rebel against this, or is he setting the example?

Oh God I just watched the trailer. See, Sonic 4 appears to be an attempt at a return to old values with new(er) graphics in the same vein as 'New Super Mario Bros.' (which I'm not entirely sold on even though everyone is getting all hot over what is little more than an abuse of the fanbase). Whereas THIS game looks like what one might politely refer to as a 'Charlie Foxtrot' (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=clusterfuck).
It's a mess! Do I actually see Sonic blindly BURROWING in random directions? Why!? Sega, you cannot translate in any sort of acceptable or meaningful way the sidescrolling 'go-faster n'-hell' levels from the 2D era into a fully 3D environment with a 3rd person perspective. This looks EXACTLY like 'Sonic Unleashed', which was universally accepted as 'awful', at least.
The 'Adventure' series model is the only thing you really have to work with here, why is that being ignored? Ok everyone hated the MILLIONS of extra characters it added on but those were relatively fun titles that you could have easily re-worked into a decent, dare I say, renaissance for the franchise.

Technically, the awful came from the nighttime and adventure parts, quite a few people actually liked the day time stuff(IGN went so far as saying it was the only worthwhile part of the game), which is what this is(with more gimmicks...burrowing, yes galaxy is fun but you don't have to take cues from them).
SEGA has been getting closer to making a pretty good Sonic game, but they always ruin it with gimmick after gimmick. Most of the time, they just break up the high paced part of the game and destroy anything it had going for it.
If they just improved the control and camera from unleashed daytime stuff, we'd have a base for a pretty good sonic 3d game, and that's what I hope they did. I just hope the colors gimmick doesn't destroy this game. Perhaps they'll put more thought into level design like they did with Secret Rings(hopefully better as Secret Rings still had a ton of problems).

I really loathe these 'daytime' or 'speed' levels personally. Switching the perspectives is weird and pointless and when it's in 3rd person mode (behind Sonic rather than the 2D perspective) it looks like I'm supposed to explore when in reality I'm supposed to run really fast and only get to check out the environment when I accidentally run into something I'm not supposed to becuase I'm GOING TOO DAMN FAST.[/rage]

Sonic 2D good runs are all about memorization.
Daytime levels good runs are all about memorization.
Sonic has always been part racing, that's part of the draw of it, being a racing platformer. Racing requires a bit of memorization to do it any good. Problem is, their level design isn't totally up to par and if you don't memorize the levels in the 3d one it breaks the speed up way too much. Part of that is the camera and if they can really fix that we'll probably be given a much better experience, but the other part is Sega hasn't quite fully grasped what Sonic is, which is evident by all the gimmicks they use(this effects the levels immensely). Once they go with the racing platformer, or stick with one direction, we'll get a much better game. They seem to be heading towards this, which I hope they finally hit the nail on it's head.
EDIT: The camera itself needs to have those transitions, however I don't know if abruptly changing the camera is really what's needed. There needs to be more indication of a camera change. It gives a whole lot of speed and allows you to feel it differently. Side view lets you see a more robust view of how fast you are going, while the 3d really let's you feel it. You need both to make a 3d sonic good.
