What the hell did I do to deserve this?

How was I to know that the Queen wasn't going to tolerate any questions about how she rose to power at the age of thirteen? I mean, the Old Queen Ingiz may have died of old age last year at the venerable age of 154, but does old age leave so much blood on the walls and all over the new Royal Guard's weaponry?

I had gotten lucky they told me, she decided to have me 'play a game'. I am to go out into the wilderness and start a new colony for our empire, The Circular Key.

What luck, I'm out here in the wilderness now. Besides myself

The Queen told me before we left that she had a device that was going to allow her to watch our struggles. Her 'eye in the sky'. I didn't believe her...I didn't believe until we arrived at a mountain pass and found a sign from her telling us we had arrived at our destination.

We had arrived at the future site of the Great Fortress 'Cluttered Gods'...
Behold, the sign said, behold the future home of

What a bloody stupid name...

------------------------------------

Yep, it's another Dwarf Fortress LP! This time using DF 2010!

Unlike Thadius' DF LP, this most likely won't be a succession fortress at first. This is the first time I've played with the new version of Dwarf Fortress and I'm currently of the opinion that the hilarity that ensues should be enough entertainment.

I will be dwarfing anyone who requests it, as you can see above we have several 'Insert Name' dwarfs waiting for victims volunteers.

The first true update will be sometime later this week, I'm just starting the LP so that I can set some names for the first seven before they die horribly in some accident or get eaten by hoary marmots or fall into the nearby magma pipe (yes there is one nearby, I forgot to take a screen shot of the embarkation site :( )

Hopefully this will be entertaining for all.

Good luck.... BWAHAHAHA. So they fix that flesh melts in the rain glitch yet? Haven't tried DF2010 for a while.

From what I've heard, a lot of the bugs have been fixed, but there's still some issues with military training and anything that has to do with hospitals at all.

Sign me up. I distinctly remember enjoying your tenure as Overlord last time.

I'd like to be a miner, if ye'd be so kind.

Flare, do you care what gender your dwarf is?

Also, the Doctor's name is Equius.

Viridis
07-26-2010, 10:36 PM
Dwarf me into whatever they call the record keeper. I was that last time.

Niveras
07-26-2010, 11:12 PM
You got any peasants who's only job is to haul junk and maybe get drafted for use as cannon fodder against whatever ails the fort? I'll be such a dwarf; I'm useless like that. I can wait for the first migrants if need be.

I don't plan on checking the thread very often though, so if you expect your dwarf choosers to give you some directions feel free to pass me up.

Flare, do you care what gender your dwarf is?

Also, the Doctor's name is Equius.

Female preferred, but no real need to lose sleep over it.

Melfice
07-27-2010, 12:39 AM
As in the last LP, I should like to be a soldier again.
Preferably a swordie, but I'm not too picky.

Shyria Dracnoir
07-27-2010, 01:22 AM
Likewise, I don't have much of a preference for what I end up as or even what gender dwarf I get, I'm happy with getting dwarfed at all.

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk

I too humbly request to once more be Dorfinated. I shall like to also be a soldier of some description, so I can attempt to out-do Melfice when it comes to swording things.

Excerpts from the Journal of Wigmund Crazedtreaty
sometime in Moonstone, 368
It is a sad time, King Eshtan has died and his daughter Ingiz Sizzledcastle has assumed the throne of the Circular Key. May she rein a hundred years.

I have enjoyed my many years of working as a simple clerk under the good king and will faithfully serve Queen Ingiz until the day I die.

late Obsidian, 373
Foul rumors are afoot, something is going on. The Court has been acting erratically lately, many of the nobles have been experiencing horrific accidents.

The Tax Collector went to check upon the Royal Treasury only to find the vault filled with magma.

The Duke was set upon by a pack of yetis in his own quarters. I can't stand to recount what those monsters did to his consort...the blood was everywhere...she was still alive when the Royal Guard decided it was best to send for the Hammerer instead of the Royal Surgeon...

Let's not forget the Hammerer, let's just say some would call his accident most ironic.

But all these accidents have happened without reason, no one in the court would stand to gain from any of this. What is happening here? Everyone's afraid...even the Queen.

early Granite, 374
I don't know what happened. I was running a notification on failed Mandates to the Queen when I entered her chamber and saw all that blood...it was everywhere. And the Royal Guard...their weapons...

They officially announced it was old age. The Good Queen Ingiz had died at the age of 154, peacefully in her quarters. That is what they told me. That is what they expected me to believe.

The very same day, the court was gathered to meet her successor...Queen Mauve. She was only 12 years old at the time of her ascension to the throne, the youngest monarch in the history of the Circular Key. And she quickly proved to be one of the most competent and deadly rulers.

The Queen quickly had the new Royal Guard bring me in for a meeting with her. She decided that since it was obvious that I wasn't going to be a cooperative subject, I needed to 'play a game' with her. I'll never forget the smile she gave me when she said that...it shall haunt my dreams for the rest of my life.

I was to found a new colony for her empire I was told. For too long the Circular Key had been content to hid in the mountains at the edge of the Southern Ice Cap, but now it needed to expand northward. Myself and several dozen other volunteers were to take some supplies and head out...immediately.

She told me we'd know our destination when we got there. And she'd be watching us. She had her ways.

Late Winter, 375
It has been nearly two years since we departed the Mountainhome, many of the other settlers have died. Some through stupid accidents, some through attacks and some just wandered off into the wilds.

We reached a mountain pass in the middle of the continent near a volcano - damned if I remember its name. Through the low valley of this pass were the beginnings of a river, just a mere creek here. And high up on the plateau where we were was the beginnings of a desert hidden within the mountains.

We were struggling to get our wagon onto the plateau when I saw it.

A sign.

The sign proclaimed:
"Welcome to your destination weary travelers!"
"You have reached the future site of Cluttered Gods! Behold Omnom!"

What a stupid name for an outpost...

1st of Granite, 376
I decided that the best thing to do as Expedition Leader was to start digging down from where we currently to build a temporary outpost to house ourselves and then from there judge how we should build our new home.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/First%20Journal/Entry.jpg?t=1280272656

Besides myself, there were six other dwarfs who survived the long journey.
There was:
Equius, our doctor and butcher. He frightens me. Always watching. Always talking about how he wants to be stronger
Thadius and Loyal, miners who I suspect have some fighting training, but I'm not certain
Flare, the farmer and cook
Greed, the mason and general craftsdwarf
and Shyria, the Carpenter and Axedwarf.
As well as a pair of cats and dogs and a mule.

As we set up our camp, a startling thing happened. One of the ponds that dot the plateau collapsed into the volcano!
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/First%20Journal/Pondcollapseintomagma.jpg?t=1280272645
Apparently the pond's edge had been undermined by the magma pipe and finally gave way. We could see steam and smoke rising from our vantage point. I decided this was good reason not to build right on top of the magma.

The miners did a quick survey of the area we were building in and they told me they spotted veins of hematite, tetrahedrite, galena, gold, silver, copper and aluminum all right at the surface further down the mountain face. And that from the way the rumbling of debris collapsing into the pipe sounded, there must be extensive caverns underground filled with magma as well. And probably more ores and gems for us to harvest.

Armok be damned if I know how they ascertained this knowledge.

17th of Galena, 376
By Armok, what the HFS was that?!

A voice boomed from the vast empty heavens into which we all may fall upwards without the stone holding us down that Adamantine had been discovered at our site.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/First%20Journal/Huh.jpg?t=1280272652
Wait...what?

In other news, the miners are busily working at excavating the first phase of the outpost. And they've told me that they've found microcline, cinnabar, galena and aluminum. The microcline and cinnabar they've told me about repeatedly. I don't care about those damn red and blue rocks. Just tell me when you find gems or ores. And no! I don't care if you find a new rock layer down there JUST DIG IT OUT!

8th of Slate, 376
Well that's nice. Alligators live down in the valley.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/First%20Journal/alligators.jpg?t=1280272657
Maybe we'll try and catch them later. Good eats and good guard critters.

Other than that, the only creatures we've seen are some marmots and various camels.

19th of Slate, 376
Finally, the excavation of the first phase of the outpost is mostly complete. From here we can rest and plan out the future design of Omnom in relative comfort and safety. The only entrance is the stairwell and I'm going to have to wall and roof that area off eventually, but no rush there. Nothing real dangerous nearby.

The first level below the surface is our storage area, as well as the farms. Since it was just soil we didn't have to move any rocks once the rooms were complete.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/First%20Journal/Phase1farmingandstorage.jpg?t=1280272649

Below that is where we live, work and eat.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/First%20Journal/Phase1livingquarters.jpg?t=1280272648
My chambers are at the end of the main hall next to my offices. To the north of my area is the barracks just in case we get any migrants before we start construction on Omnom proper and to the south is the top of what will be one of four grand stairwells connecting every level of the outpost together.

Then there are the rooms of each of my fellow travelers. At this time I had commandeered Shyria's quarters since my own were not complete yet.

Then next to the bedrooms on the north side of the hall is the Dining Room with stairs leading up to the storage areas for food and drinks. And to the south of that is the hospital, connected to the doctor's quarters...and his butchery shop...He scares me so very much. He's excited because at some point we'll install a traction table for him. He likes those. He likes them a lot.

And finally to the west of everything are the workshops, food prep to the south and manufacturing to the north.

25th of Slate, 376
We just flooded the farming chamber so Flare will be able to grow us some food to replenish what little supplies we have.

Also, the miners have completed the first of the stairwells, this one currently extends from the bottom of our outpost to 14 levels down, just below the level of the valley's floor.

My office and bedroom have been completed today. Took us long enough, but there has been so much to do getting everything started here.

Now a strange urge has overtaken me and I'm frightened.

I feel the need to take an inventory of everything in the outpost...everything in this area needs to be counted. All the seeds all the rocks all the spills all the vermin killed by the cats all the...By the Great Toad...it's afflicted me...

The same curse that afflicted the first leader of that cursed fortress whateveritsnamewas (http://www.nuklearforums.com/showthread.php?t=36700).

Good thing there aren't any unicorns or kittens here. Otherwise the other settlers would have to pitch me into the volcano to save all our souls.

13th of Felsite, 376
The miners have now started work on what will become a vast collection of wells that stretch from the bottom of Omnom to the top. They'll be nestled between the four main stairs and provide easy access to water no matter where one is in the future fortress.

Damn I'm a genius.

Also, I've got planned out an extensive front gate system that will eventually feature four long bridges over a 10 level deep pit. I can't wait to have it completed so we can deal with those damn elven traders.

I know they've been watching us. Judging us. Those damned beardless monstrosities.

-----------------------------------

Alright first update, sorry for the length and what's probably a boring back story.

It's the boring part of getting the fortress started in a calm area. Hopefully in a season or two we'll see some kobolds try to sneak in and steal shit and I'll be starting the really dangerous construction projects.

Remember the fun way to excavate a massive pit from Workgill? Let's see if we can lose a miner or open a way into some nasty caverns that may be lurking below.

Note: The pond sending water into the magma pipe flooded me with 'cavern collapse' messages and apparently revealed portions of the magma caves some 58+ levels below everything. I don't know how this happened, but it revealed the adamantine in one area and briefly revealed a magma man swimming around.

Good news, I'll be able to build extensive magma-based defenses thanks to this! I'm thinking we need a magma mist generator somewhere near the front gate to bath our foes in the unholy flames of our anger clean any filthy travelers and traders that may happen upon our modest abode. Whether it's traders, thieves, invaders or incoming nobles.

Oh Lord Murphy Armok.

Apparently early King/Queen is not a problem in DF2010 (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Monarch).

As for the Queen's name when she arrives, Mauve will have to request that herself :D Otherwise someone else might get it.

Considering Monarchs are replaced by heirs, it's not really possible to permanently get rid of them(then they appoint other nobles, so meh!)

Too bad they got rid of philosophers, I figure that'd be the closest thing to me(basically a destitute bum who only does jobs fit for children)

Summer of the Year 376 at the outpost Omnom

9th of Hematite, 376
The well reservoir has been completed and now the miners are digging out a tunnel to connect it to the nearby creek.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Second%20Journal/WellBasin.jpg?t=1280429676
The miners found even more ore veins during excavation.
If we ever get our hands on a damned metalsmith here and an anvil Cluttered Gods shall be the mightiest fortress in all of dwarfdom.

7th of Malacite, 376
Migrants?! We've been sent migrants?!
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Second%20Journal/Firstmigrants.jpg?t=1280429685
The newcomers are a butcher with two daughters, a bone doctor who prefers to fish, a carpenter, two stray donkey foals and a stray bull calf.

Lovely, I wonder if the useful dwarfs got devoured by some forgotten beast on the way here or if this is all Queen Mauve sent our way.

16th of Malachite, 376
I have sent the miners to start digging out what will be the grand entryway into the future Omnom.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Second%20Journal/MainEntry.jpg?t=1280429678
The pit shall be 10 levels deep traversed by four bridges and the walls will be carved into fortifications so that bowmen can fire upon any unwelcome visitors from relative safety. The trade depot will eventually be connected to a vast storage area for goods and other crap. And my favorite part shall be the grand dining hall which will have multiple levels, waterfalls and lovely engravings.

2nd of Galena, 376
There's an alligator near the entrance...
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Second%20Journal/gatorgame.jpg?t=1280429684
He's been prowling around the ponds on the green side of the plateau for about a month now. I think he's stalking the fisherman.

Sent Shyria out to keep an eye out and if need be, 'axe' the gator to leave.

9th of Galena, 376
The miner, Loyal, has proven his worth to the outpost and has become Legendary.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Second%20Journal/LoyalAscension.jpg?t=1280429682
He developed a strange blue pulsing glow, so I had Doc Equius check him out and now Loyal's working faster than before.
Don't know what the doc did to him, but I should send Thadius to see him.

28th of Galena, 376
The miners found sphalerite among other ores within the pit excavation area.

Armok rain magma upon my beard, it's Autumn. The first caravan should be arriving soon and we've got nothing to trade to them.
I need to think of a way to deal with this.

-------

Boring update, nothing happened besides nervously watching that alligator who wandered away after awhile.

No dwarfifications, no deaths, just excavations.

Autumn of the year 376 at the outpost Omnom

14th of Limestone, 376
Oh great, the animals are breeding. Guess this means we'll finally have meat on the tables.
It'll give Doc something to do besides stand in the hall and stare at everyone who passes by.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20376/Breeding.jpg?t=1280520758
I swear he's thinking about where to make the first incision every time he looks at me.

22nd of Limestone, 376
The miners are digging up gems in the pit. Greed claims they are Morganites and Alexandrite.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20376/gems.jpg?t=1280520750
Oh, and I really need to thank Doc Equius for whatever he did to Thadius. Now both miners are working at a break-neck pace.
I never want to figure out what he did, but the Doc's a miracle worker.

3rd of Sandstone, 376
Oh shit, more migrants.
At least it's someone useful. A high master armorsmith, her peasant husband and their two children.
The peasant calls himself 'Viridis' and claims that he has some talent as a soldier.

We need our inventory counted. Guess we have a new bookkeeper.

5th of Sandstone, 376
Viridis has been locked into a closet so that he can damn well learn to do what I tell him to do.

20th of Timber, 376

What the HFS does he want? Quit following me!

22nd of Timber, 376
SKULKING FILTH! A kobold ran into one of the many cats stalking around the outpost.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20376/skulker.jpg?t=1280520746
The little thief promptly ran off, but not before being chased a bit by Shyria.

25th of Timber, 376
The liaison chased me outside, down the hillside and forced me to bargain with him for what goods they shall bring to the outpost next year.
Bastard! Forcing me to make deals with my own empire.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20376/persistence.jpg?t=1280521539
Well, I showed him afterwards. I had all the goods in the Depot seized.

Also, another kobold spotted today. This one was hiding inside the pile of junk we seized from the traders.
Scared the hell out of the assistant carpenter.

Did the Queen have them seed the area with those thieving rats?!

I knew it! The caravan was sent by Queen Mauve to sabotage me!
But that doesn't matter now does it?
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Winter%20376/Captured.jpg?t=1280609971
They'll be staying here forever. Now they'll never get a chance to report back to the Queen and give her suggestions on how to tamper with my outpost.

17th of Moonstone, 376
Buzzards!
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Winter%20376/Buzzards.jpg?t=1280609967
Buzzards are raiding the food left in the pile of junk we stole from the traders!
They're shitting on me! They're trying to carry off one of the butchers!
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Winter%20376/Mycheese.jpg?t=1280609984
THEY'RE STEALING MY CHEESE!

4th of Opal, 376
I decided to check on Viridis today, he's making good progress on the inventory. I've decided that his family can see him now.
I'm gonna keep an eye on him though...I have yet to see any strange books appear in his quarters, but I'm always prepared.

12th of Opal, 376
Wonderful news from our prisoners. One of the merchants has gone quite mad you know.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Winter%20376/Crazy.jpg?t=1280609980
Apparently he started to attack his mule and the mace-wielding guard locked in there with him.
Needless to say he didn't last very long.

And now the other merchant's flipped his lid as well. Plus the aforementioned mule has become demented.
This all quite wonderful to watch.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Winter%20376/Bloodonthewalls.jpg?t=1280609962
Well, the last merchant is dead and now his horse has become depressed.
Quite entertaining, quite.

Now let's see how long the animals can stand being around rotting corpses.

28th of Opal, 376
I've decided to let the miners have a break from digging underground all the time.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Winter%20376/Trenchwork.jpg?t=1280609991
They're gonna be digging a defensive trench around the outpost and down to the creek in the valley below.
In my genius, I have decided to build a bridge connecting our hillside to a lone outcropping separated by the creek.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Winter%20376/BuildingBridges.jpg?t=1280609964
This shall become the only path into and from Cluttered Gods. Omnom shall be a marvel of fortifications.
Goblins will quake in their iron boots when they see the grand defenses I will have in store for them.

20th of Obsidian, 376
What is this?! A kobold has managed to sneak into our storage areas?!
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Winter%20376/TeddyThief.jpg?t=1280609986
Wait...it's got a steel toy boat! Dammit!
Where's Shyria?!
Why didn't the caged dogs notice this vermin before it entered the outpost?!

Dammit dammit dammit! It got away. That means we'll have even more of them show up soon.

Loyal and Thadius are gonna be working overtime getting that trench completed and the dogs are all going on chains!

Nothing shall threaten my outpost. Nothing shall threaten my power here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

What's this? Has our brave expeditionary leader gone mad with power?!

I wasn't expecting the buzzard raid. I didn't realize Toady had decided to include flying versions of rhesus macaques. It was a riot as the buzzards swooped in, terrified all the dwarfs, attacked one of the farmers and carried off various plump helmets and cheeses.

In other news: future updates are probably gonna be two seasons per since it takes little time on my part to play through a season and little has happened so far. Though this will probably change back once everything is up and running and I break into the caves below and have frequent goblin raids and elf sieges on my doorstep and FUN looms around every corner.

I want to apologize for taking so long on the next update.

I've been having FUN trying to figure out how the military screen works and I also got stuck in a rut pre-planning some layouts among other things.
Additionally, I've had things come up in real life (sig's telling the truth :D )that have taken away time to really play DF and focus on it.

Needless to say, I've gotten through the rut and should have an new log up soonish.

And now for your enjoyment It's an Intermission! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHOBw6XwqRo&feature=related)

Excerpts from the Journal of Overseer Wigmund Crazedtreaty
Spring and Summer of the Year 377 at the outpost Omnom

1st of Granite, 377
One year, has it really been one year since we set up here?

13th of Granite, 377
For some reason I have decided to throw a party today.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/th_Partytime.jpg?t=1280965063
Did the children make me do this? What strange powers do these foul things hold over me?

Also, the animals have been breeding again. Kitten roasts for everyone!
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Kitten.jpg?t=1280967481

24th of Granite, 377
I have decided to let the surviving caravan guards leave their special accommodations.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Escape.jpg?t=1280965440
They shall spread the knowledge that Omnom does not tolerate any threats to its safety.

6th of Slade, 377
We've started work on what will become a Microcline Road connecting the fortress with the outside world.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/MicroclineRoad.jpg?t=1280965559
Have to find something to do with all those damn blue rocks.

16th of Slade, 377
Apparently the Queen wasn't amused with my treatment of her spies.
Or everyone is terrified of the majesty of this outpost.

Either way, we haven't received any migrants so far this season.

14th of Felsite, 377
The trenches have been completed and now we have complete reign over this side of the creek and the main hillside. Even the volcano is under the control of Omnom!

16th of Felsite, 377
Elves! Those scum have actually sent traders here?!
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/ElfScum.jpg?t=1280965809
I'll humor them this time. As I don't want to spoil what I have in store for them next spring...

23rd of Felsite, 377
I feel filthy. The elves are happy, but I swear that next year they shall not even step foot in the fortress proper before I strike them down.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Dealingwithscum.jpg?t=1280967444
On the other hand they did have some decent drinks and caged creatures that we pawned off a huge pile of crappy trinkets on them for.

15th of Hematite, 377
The elves have left the fortress. I despise letting them live, but they'll lull the next year's caravan into thinking it's safe to come here.

All according to plan.

23rd of Hematite, 377
I have spent several days working out the floor plans for what will become our workshops, dining halls and some sleeping quarters.

Level 5 contains what is an open pit where we shall farm those surface crops that can't grow in the glorious darkness as Armok intended all plants should.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/SurfaceFarmPit.jpg?t=1280966087

Level 4 is where the soap production, ashery and wood furnaces are going to be housed. Really don't need them but these workshops will some lazy peasant something to do eventually.
Also, this level will have the water reservoir that will feed the waterfalls in the dining halls below.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/ReservoirandSoapProduction.jpg?t=1280966096

Level 3 will house the masonry, carpentry and jeweler's workshops as well as storage areas for furniture.
The dining areas on this level will overlook dining hall be reserved for myself and the chosen elite of Omnom. Nothing but the best.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/ProductionandEliteDining.jpg?t=1280966099

Level 2 will house the future textile industry of Omnom as well as the sweatshops that will churn out the cheap crap demanded by so many traders.
The dining balconies on this level look out over the main hall and will be for the nobles and other officials that will infest Omnom in the future.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/HighEndDiningandClothing.jpg?t=1280966103

The Entry Level of Omnom houses the Main Dining Hall which will have five majestic waterfalls falling from far above as well as the Kitchens which will feed this hungry fortress.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/MainLevelandFoodProduction.jpg?t=1280966109

Lower Level 1 will house the Siege Workshops were weapons of war will be produced as well as the mechanics shops will help power the industrial might we will attain.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Engineering.jpg?t=1280966116

Lower Level 2 is where the true magic of Omnom will happen. Here we shall tap the very power of the nearby volcano and forge mighty blades and armor that will allow us to storm the very gates of Hell itself!
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Forges.jpg?t=1280966119

Additionally, there will be a system of pumps that will both provide irrigation for the underground farms on the Kitchen level, but also power the mighty gears that will power the industries here.

3rd of Malacite, 377
Camels have been wandering into the outpost for some reason lately. I have ordered Shyria to guard the gates as much as possible. Hopefully the next migrant wave will provide us some more fodder recruits.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Camels.jpg?t=1280967121

Shyria decided that the name of her squad should be the 'Mountainous Climaxes'. Alright then.

10th of Malachite, 377
Seems we're infested now.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Camelchase.jpg?t=1280967380
A camel jumped Viridis by leaping out from under his bed and has chased him into the Entry Hall.

There's another camel lurking in the kitchens.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Kitchencamel.jpg?t=1280967376
We've blocked the doors and are trying to set up some traps to catch it if it tries to escape.

23rd of Malachite, 377
Well that didn't work.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Injuries.jpg?t=1280967553

More traps are needed.

3rd of Galena, 377
Viridis ran up to me in a panic today. Or maybe it was excitement. Hard to tell.

Apparently those critters I got from the elves included a Grizzly Bear, a Tiger, a Saltwater Crocodile, a pair of Elk and a Deer.

4th of Galena, 377
Started work on a sacrificial pit today. It'll be filled with water and house the crocodile as well as any alligators we catch and train.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/SacrificialPit.jpg?t=1280967477
And later goblins to feed them all.

21st of Galena, 377
Camel captured. Flare's room is a mess.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Captured.jpg?t=1280967540
Now if we can do something about the half dozen other camels wandering around here.

23rd of Galena, 377
Our first snatcher.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Year%20377/Snatched.jpg?t=1280967475
Pity he didn't make it much further than the cage traps at the bridge.

A real pity.

Any way Dorflare can get some kind of combat skill?

Wigmund
08-04-2010, 10:38 PM
To be honest, I have no idea how.

Toady really changed the Military system from the previous version. Now you can actually assign squads to specific areas, have them wear uniforms, tell them when to cycle between training, patrols, breaks and whatnot.

But it makes it hard to grab a random dwarf, give them some combat training to toughen them up and send them back to work. Especially since they got rid of the stats (no more Superdwarvenly Strong/Tough scribes :( ) and wrestling is nearly useless in combat.

Okay... uh, let's see.
A quartered escutcheon with one half filled with two crosses made of axes. One quarter has two beer steins. The other quarter is yet to be filled, though I might simply fill it with generic colours and/or shapes.

Thinking of a single bear rampant supporting the escutcheon, which is carried on the back of the crocodile which will act as the compartment.

My "research" failed on what a crocodile means in heraldry, but the bear stands for "[...]strength, cunning and ferocity in the protection of one's kindred."

This'll be the Fortress achievement.
The actual coat of arms will be somewhat simplified.

Does this seem okay? I'm still open to more suggestions.

Malek

If you need a filler for one of the quarters, it should be a piece of dwarven cheese.

Excerpts from the Journals of the Overseer Wigmund Crazedtreaty
Autumn of the Year 377 at the outpost Omnom

3rd of Limestone, 377
In an effort to relieve crowding in the animal cages - and to give ourselves some sort of defensive military - a temporary training kennel has been set up in the incomplete dining hall and many of our excess critters will be trained into Warbeasts.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20377/Kennel.jpg?t=1281400179

It was either that or have Doc Equius butcher some more of them, but we've run out of room in our current food storage areas.

15th of Limestone, 377
Another camel in the kitchens today.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20377/Nuthercamel.jpg?t=1281400172

This one actually put up a chase before it stumbled into the cages set up for the one that was hiding in Flare's room. It ran through the kitchens, into the hospital, across the hall into the dining area, scared the shit of those children, up into the alcohol storage room, back down the stairs connecting to the workshops, into the hospital again, through Doc Equius' room and finally into the trap.

We really need some more entertainment here.

17th of Limestone, 377
Woke up to a horrific stench this morning. Upon answering my polite demands as to the source of the offending odors, Viridis showed me that we have no less than FOURTEEN camels in cages throughout the fort.

Apparently they have developed an odd habit of charging the cage traps at the exterior bridge on a seasonal basis. Whether it's due to us blocking off their usual migration destinations in the swampy areas on the plateau or they have developed some sort of suicide cult where they sacrifice themselves to my greatness we shall never know.

13th of Sandstone, 377
I have decided to throw a party today to celebrate my greatness and to toast what will be my long reign as Overseer of Omnom.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20377/PartyAnimals.jpg?t=1281400171

We have one.

5th of Timber, 377
I have decided to have the top layer of the pit removed early so that we may go ahead and construct the bridges that will traverse the chasm.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20377/Bridges.jpg?t=1281400181

Thadius and Loyal have been sent back down below to finish digging out the rest of the pit so that we may have our Grand Collapse sometime in the next year.

18th of Timber, 377
The caravan from the Mountainhomes has shown up today. Should I treat them like I did their predecessors? Should they drag home a couple of bloodied carcasses as further proof to the Queen that I am no longer her pawn for her Armok-damned amusement?
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20377/SecondCaravan.jpg?t=1281400167

No, I shall actually trade with these dwarfs. They know what happened to their comrades. I shall let the fear consume them and allow me to make terrific deals at their expense.

24th of Timber, 377
Apparently some of the camels we captured were pregnant because one gave birth to a calf today.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20377/BabyCamel.jpg?t=1281400183
Looks delicious.

Apparently a kobold was following the caravan because Greed ran into it in the Entry Hall while working on the bridges. I have ordered Shyria to check the merchant's beasts for any suspicious boxes that may currently or may have contained kobolds so that the things will infest the area.

I don't need an excuse to lock all this caravan away and watch them go insane...but I'd like one...

27th of Timber, 377
Another kobold was discovered in the Entry Hall today.
Poor Thadius was chased down into the pit by the thing before he realized it was scurrying out of the fort.
http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af38/lwyman/Cluttered%20Gods%20LP/Autumn%20377/Koboldredux.jpg?t=1281400177

Shyria figures the damn things must migrate with the caravans, following in their shadows trying to find something shiny to take home to pick up the best kobold girl in their warrens. Shyria was ordered to bed rest by the Doc to rid herself of these damned silly notions. It's obvious the Queen uses them to mess with me.

Another camel was born today. Goddamn long-legged furry roaches.
