View Full Version : Exalted Long Term Campaign Interest Thread

Funka Genocide

This is a basic interest thread to find some players for a chat based, long term Exalted campaign. The general idea is a multi-episode epic detailing the shifting of the epoch in Creation.

The idea would be to meet up via a chat program on a weekly basis and work through episodes in real time. We could handle any offtime or out of character things on this forum and use it as a general base of operations through pms and such.

I'd be running things as the storyteller and I'd like between 4 and 6 players who can make a regular chat group. Not really sure how long it'd go, but if time constraints became an issue we could make it biweekly and have pc's played by proxy.

I have pretty much every book from the first edition, and a few from second edition. You'd need to get your hands on these books yourself, which might make this an expensive (or illegal, depending on your predilections.) endeavor, but if you're like me and have been sitting on these books for the better part of a decade then this might be right up your alley.

Anyways. post here if you're interested, feel free to ask any questions or present any ideas you might have. I don't have anything written in stone yet so this could be a standard Solar campaign, an alternate single exalt type campaign or a free for all combined campaign depending on everyone's leanings. I'd prefer to have everyone on generally equal footing, so I'm leaning away from a Dragon blooded centric campaign, as they pretty much fall over like drunken prom dates in the back of a limo, but I digress.

I'm interested. Considerably more so in 2ed than 1ed.

My schedule is currently very open, but I can't promise it will remain so, however. So there's that.

I'd also prefer a solar or mixed campaign.

I think I've got the basic 2ed rule book and some various source books for artifacts and spells and shits.

I could probably get my hands on the other books somehow that is totally legit.

I only have the 2nd Edition core and Dragon-Blooded sourcebook(which as I figured is pretty much useless at the time). I'm also completely new to the scenery, but I guess that there is only one good way to get better.

Also my major periods of activity due to my hours is about midnight to 4 am central time. Still I would be interested in this if I can be allowed in.

I'm interested. I can obtain the books if needed.

Ok I've got all the source books now for 2ed and if we can get at least one more interested party I can start drawing up some plans and get a schedule in place.

If most everyone just has the main rule book we can run a solar campaign which is really what I'm looking to do. I like the idea of using all the other exalt types as foils, villains and all around assholes.

Setting is likely going to be immediately after the Empress' disappearance. I've got a few major story arcs in mind but we'll start off relatively small (ie: mainly concerning a major city and the surrounding areas in a single direction.)

Players will be basic starting solars, no special allowances for anyone and certain 5 point backgrounds and such might be vetoed out of hand because I'm a dick like that. Basically, I want the characters fresh off the boat, so to speak.

Buuut, I'm in Australia so the time zone difference might be a problem.

I have been looking for a new tabletop game, what is Exalted like and what setting is it. I am always looking for a new tabletop system, so I guess you can count me interested. I will look for the books tomorrow or the next day if the place by me is closed tomorrow.

Ok looks like there's enough people to get going. I am thinking a 2 hour window sometime on the weekends, I am located in Las Vegas so I'm American pacific time zone. If we can work it out for late Saturday morning in that time zone that'd be cool.

Like from 10am to noon PST. We can go longer or move around as needed.

If thats' cool then let me know, if not let me know a better time. I used to be a hardcore wow raider so I'm accustomed to shuffling my schedule for online crap, but I work 4 days a week from Monday to Thursday, I'm out of the house from around 5am to 5:30 pm so I'd like to avoid those days.

For those of you without the books, I'd recommend just getting your hands on the basic 2nd edition rulebook, you really won't need anything else unless everyone wants to do an alternative exalt type.

So what I'd like to hear from everyone at this juncture is their time preferences and campaign type. I'm leaning towards an all Solar campaign. I'd entertain Lunar and Sidereal and maaayyybe Abyssal. No Infernal, Alchemical or dragon blooded though.

No fair folk either.

But yeah, solars are pretty much the beefiest character types anyways.

Also: One more slot left if anyone else is interested, once we get the particular hashed out we can start submitting character sheets.

Weekends are definitely the best time for me in any fashion or way, I've pretty much died on making plans for that time period anyway, so yeah clue me in for then...must set alarm cause I've been sleeping away those hours a lot.

That.... that is early.

I could TRY to be up that soon, I guess.

EDIT: I would SUGGEST, but not insist upon or even really care that much, that you limit character creation to the main book. 1ed had lots of problems that the core 2ed book solved quite handily. Unfortunately a lot of the supplements were either written by teams who didn't communicate well (see abyssals), or by some kind of retarded monkeys. As a result you have some pretty broken (both over powered and underpowered) things, particularly centered around celestial martial arts. Like Void Avatar Prana.

Plus a straight solar game would be pretty cool.

All Solar sounds good. That time would be about 4am for me though, so perhaps I should opt out.

ok we can move it up to sometime in the early afternoon if that works better.

How about 2pm pst Saturdays? and like I said we can move it to every other saturday and even have some forum sessions if needs be. I'd really just like to work out the major combat sequences via chat.

If everyone is cool with a solar campaign you can start making your character sheets using the 2nd edition rule book and send them to me. It'd be cool if we could get started this Saturday so let me know if the new time is good before then.

I'm ok with 2.

Edit: It may take me a little longer than tomorrow to get a character completely together. I'm looking at using a night caste pirate I have sitting around, but I'm not 100% sure she was fully completed and it's been awhile since I've looked in the exalted books.

If you really wanna start that quick I could kick you off the .txt and you could check her over for inaccuracies or whatever.

Hmm, since I'm going to have to brush up on a lot of things to put together a background and settle my options regarding sorcery, magitech and thaumaturgy, there's no way I'll be able to get a sheet done tomorrow.

What is decided so far:

Twilight, intended to be a scavenger, archeologist or explorer (favours Resistance, Survival and Presence). A lot of other details are being debated but they're too hazy to put down as options right now. Next port of call is reading up on some good places to come from.

Ok it looks like most everyone needs some more time so we can set this back a week and maybe get started on the forums here. So far I've seen Overcast and Krogoth's sheets and the numbers look legal, Krogoth you seem to have a lot of redundancies which would equate to wasted points but other than that I don't see anything invalid.

I'd suggest going with one method of close range attack and one of long range. There might be some merit in multi-talenting into both melee and martial arts in the beginning due to the possibility of being unarmed, however as a Dawn caste solar the likelihood of you being disarmed is somewhere between not very and go fuck yourself.

having 2 forms of ranged attack just seems silly though. Go with thrown or archery and use the other points for something more useful.

I'm pretty sure Krylo and maybe some others are more familiar with optimizing a character build though so they should feel free to add their 2 bits.

I'll get some info about the campaign setting up so you guys can adapt your back stories to include a reason to come together. It looks like we have 5 players (5 right? or did I forget how to count? Its possible, I work for the government.) I'm cool with it not being a perfect circle, in fact it might be more interesting that way, but I'll leave the decision up to you guys. It looks like its going to be a straight solar only campaign though, so pick a caste and send me those character sheets.

Oh, and what chat program do you guys want to use? Something free!

krogothwolf
09-11-2010, 09:38 AM
I dont recall putting any points im archery. When I get my interwebs fixed I'll fix the martial thing though. I wasnt sure what to do about them as its been awhile since I created a exalted character

Funka Genocide
09-11-2010, 11:20 AM
actually yeah, my bad. I misread it. thought there were dots in Archery there.

Right now I'm pretty much reading every book ever, so I should have a pretty well defined starting point in a bit. I'll post something fluff laden shortly and answer any questions you guys might have in regards to integrating your character into the setting.

Few basic concepts I'm strongly considering.

The East: Its the most populous direction in Creation and home to the perpetually feuding Haltan and Linowan nations, as well as the recently ascendant Solar conqueror known as the Bull of The North. There's plenty of stuff going on in any direction in creation, but probably more going on in the East than anywhere else.

The strong hand wields both quill and blade with equal puissance: Mainly a nod towards diplomacy and compassion in victory. I'd like to explore the possibility of not just conquering all you see before you, but in bettering the lives of those who fall under your reign. Engendering a sense of responsibility for your mortal charges as a means to both personal satisfaction and peril; seeing a dead dog by the roadside is unsightly, seeing your dog murdered is devastating.

Everyone Wants Everything: Being the new kids on the block is never easy. While your spark of divinity carries with it the much suffering and long denied mandate of heaven, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone willing to simply bow their heads in quiescence, the big boys have all either spent millenia killing your reincarnations over and over again or devolving into the madness of the Wyld, your erstwhile cousins the Abyssals are twisted and tragic reflections of your perfection and purity with the death of all things as their only and consuming goal, while yet more sinister and twisted beings writhe beneath the skin of defeated titans, ready to burst forth like carrion grubs from a corpse.

Suffice it to say that any being with power enough to challenge your might and right will do so, often violently, in their own bid for domination of Creation.

Your ellipsis abuse has prompted me to look up the proper usage of this grammatical device.

I now know more about ellipses than I did before, so thanks.

Other than that I guess a few things to keep in mind are the concept of your character and the nature of the game and setting.

Your concept, in my opinion, should be the driving force in character creation. You can't have a fearsome privateer, feared throughout the West as a terror of the waves, without some knowledge of sailing, or an honest woodsmen with no knowledge of the woods. I don't really look favorably on system abuse or thoughtless "twinking" of characters.

However!

The world of Exalted is a rough and tumble sort of place, where normal folk rarely leave the defined confines of their domain. People don't undertake large trips abroad lightly, or rather those who hope to make it to their destination alive don't. All manner of terrible things are hiding behind, in and under pretty much every notable piece of scenery.

What all this means is that it would be prudent to plan to defend yourself from something bigger and nastier than yourself. Defensive charms are a must and having at least one sort of perfect physical defense will really make not dying a lot more likely.

Its not quite as necessary to focus on charms that help you make other things dead or desirous of death unless your concept would dictate such. If you're a studious sort who is looking for the third codex of Morganal to confirm your theories about micro-biological essence manipulation, you might not be terribly concerned with the most efficient manner to remove a human beings head from its customary seat atop a pair of shoulders.

By its nature Exalted is a game of really freakin' awesome combat sequences, I don't plan to shy away from armed conflict in this narrative, but I will take it a little easier in the early steps. Don't expect to be arm wrestling The First And Forsaken Lion anytime soon.

Krylo

Maybe a staring contest with the Mask of Winters. Nah but I'm looking forward to seeing what you have for conflict, my natural defenses are pretty good physical and social, but I'm a bit lackluster in my unnatural social defenses. Definitely the first area of business for my personal improvement considering we may be scaling the difficulty ladder rather fast.

Oh yeah I forgot, I use aim, msn, yahoo, and most recently gtalk aka all the free ones.

Alright so the concept of my character right now is:

A veteran axe-man from within the legion who has a Wolf as a pet. He Exalted recently who had been trained by a well respected instructor within the legion and was one of his better students. He followed a dream he received when he exalted in which he ventured into a tomb where he recovered 2 artifacts there.

Short and sweet right now.

At a glance I got some issues with your character Raptor, you took Iron Whirlwind Attack without Peony Blossom Attack and One Weapon, Two Blows. So that one is out. Also you need an Essence of 4 in order to take Worshipful Lackey. With those two gone you have one free charm left.

You also didn't seem to use all your free Ability points. Which I'm guessing is because you assumed you could use the free ones to raise Presence and Performance to 5. You in fact cannot, so with that you are four bonus points in the hole and have 4 extra ability points.

I'll check krogoth's now. Same thing with Iron Whirlwind, Infinite Melee Mastery requires Essence 3. Didn't spend one primary attribute point. With the other charms eliminated you have one more free charm, and three more bonus point to work with. Oh and I got you with 12 Peripheral essence not 20.

krogothwolf
09-11-2010, 08:12 PM
Gah, Iron Whirlwind was supposed to be One Weapon, Two Blows, I have no idea why I got them mixed up. I Had Infinity Whirlwind in there with the idea of spending the 7 points on a third essence then got different ideas and didn't fix it afterwards. That's an easy fix. I wonder why I used essence x 7+ willpower instead of essence x 3 + willpower.

Actually the Hungry Tiger was suppose to be One Weapon, Two Blows and the other was Peony Blossom Attack.

rapter200
09-11-2010, 08:37 PM
Ah yes I didn't mean to add the Iron Whirlwind, I guess I just forgot to take that one out when I saved it. This is the corrected version, or at least the most up to date version. Thanks for telling me the free points don't get you to 5, guess I looked over that part.

Edit: Ok thanks yeah I did over calculate willpower but now all is good. Willpower goes down by 1 thus bringing me down to 15.

if you guys could include a rundown of how you spent your bonus points in your character sheets it would make checking them for accuracy easier for me. I don't have the exhaustive knowledge that some of you have regarding the system and mechanics (or the attention to detail, it would seem.)

I'm actually thankful that we've decided to set this back a bit since my research is taking a bit longer than I suspected. The sheer volume of source material available is kind of daunting heh.

I'll start to compile everyone's character's into a basic list, and if anyone wants some info or ideas on how to integrate their character into the setting hit me up. It'd be nice if we could get at least a few of you to have back-stories considering the East and its people's. Here are a few examples for inspiration.

A young Linowan shaman renowned for your treatment of ailing warriors afflicted with Hal fever or those who suffer from Vatal madness who exalts as a twilight caste. Suddenly thrust into a much larger theater, you must reconcile your inbred hate of the Haltans and your lingering loyalty to your Boat Clan and people with the mandate of heaven.

A daring Linowan War Clan leader who exalts as a dawn caste in a fierce battle against the Fair Folk on Haltan soil, leading your men to surprising victory but garnering the suspicion of your countries allies from the Realm. How long can you hide your divine might before the call of conquest grips you?

A veteran Haltan commando nearing the age of customary retirement, adept at infiltrating enemy fortifications and experienced in espionage who simply can't leave the lifestyle behind. Exalted as a night caste during a clandestine operation near the Linowan border, you are seen as an enigma by your people and as a treasure to your queen, who seeks a way to bargain with the Bull of The North on equal footing.

A young funerist from Sijan with an uncustomary respect for life, sought out for your original and often stirring funeral designs who exalts as a Zenith caste. You must struggle to understand your place as a priest to the Unconquered Sun and a champion of life after so long spent ministering to the dead.

A passionate hawkrider from the Barrat-Su family of Metagalpa, learned in the ways of oration and logic as well as trained in the arts of aerial combat, you defied your families isolationist and insular traditions to go questing far away from your home amidst the floating peaks of Mount Metagalpa. You exalted as an Eclipse caste on your travels and have come to a much broader understanding of Creation as the Wyld Hunt nips at the feathers of your riding hawk.

Hmm, do you mind if I keep my character originated in the Southwest? His path of universal Unity would likely lead him down to the Scavenger Lands at the very least so he could get familiar and build some ties around there in order to strengthen his overall plan. Also might grant him some minor safety if he suddenly found himself on the run from the Immaculate Order. Though I'm just building excuses since my brain already sucks from having to get familiar with the system and the organization of An-Teng. And ha, I can already tell by the name pirate that Krylo started in the opposite direction as well. I'll check the stuff now.

Here's the start of the new backstory.

Kahrim is a Linowan War Clan leader who exalted into the Dawn Class during a battle to prevent the Haltan from expanding their border further. He defends the territory easily, garnering a reputation from how he cut through the Haltan's with ease. The night after the victory, he dreamed of a tomb that he ventured to in the morning. Upon returning he possessed two rare weapons, a battle axe and a suit of breast plate.

Help fleshing it out would be appreciated.

Funka Genocide

a suit of breast plate.

Like, plate armor made from breasts?

LOLOLOLOLOL

Also if you're really attached to the concept of being from someplace else that's cool, just include a reason for being in the East in your backstory. We can roleplay out the gathering of the circle in forum posts perhaps. If you guys give me some basic groundwork for your character histories I can contrive some means of their meeting and we can work through a sort of communal prologue.

EDIT: We can work out a pre-exaltation story for you Krogoth to help define your origins if you'd like. Like roleplay it out to give it a more organic feel. I can throw together a basic scenario and have you rp through it. We could probably do it through pms and maybe publish the highlights here as your backstory.

Alrighty you're pretty much in the blue for everything except every time you took Essence Flow, since it needs 4 Essence to have. That and even if I counted them you would have gone over your free charms by two. Your dodge DV is also higher than I counted it, you have 7 I got 6.

So in the end drop dodge by one, rid yourself of all Essence Flows, and you got one more Charm you can choose.

And now krogo. Clear as far as I can see, would love to see folks fill out one like Krylo's, about to do it myself, if only because his has a shit-ton more detail in it. Figure it'll make it easier on Funka.

Yeah using Krylo's as a template would be nice as it presents everything in a concise and informative manner.

I'm still reading up on things and trying to consolidate a plot line, got what I consider to be a few really good ideas that I'll decide on shortly.

rapter200
09-12-2010, 12:55 AM
Ok I am filling out a Krylo template right now, I really like the idea of the Sijan back story. Here is what I got for motivation- To recreate creation in the image given to him by the Unconquered Sun, by either converting or destroying the Immaculate Order.

Back-story wise role-playing it would be awesome and make thing very natural if you would be up for it sometime tomorrow or the next few days, I would be as well.

Ok here is what I got filled of Krylo's template, it is not completed yet. I need to figure out my combat stuff, plus can someone tell me what Permanent means under essence and can someone check if my Essence recovery is correct... my calculation -> (8 Full rested + 2 Cult worship= 10 Recovery).

Overcast
09-12-2010, 01:52 AM
Before I even look at it you should only include the Cult Worship bonus when it comes to Essence recovery because from what I gather he gets his from his manses.

Permanent is the actual dot value of your essence rather than the numbers.

Also in hindsight Krylo could have had three essence flows if he had the base essence needed to get one.

Also here is my guy, will probably take a break after this.

One final thing since no one responded before I woke mid-nap. Raptor you have one of the rarest Artifacts in Creation. There are only six canonically, four of which are beyond your grasp. Having that one is going to invite creatures much bigger than any one of us if it becomes known that you have it. It is a singing deathwish. I left it since it didn't disobey any rules, but just warning you about the possible repercussions. And that Funka may take it from you anyway.

rapter200

Ok thanks overcast, yeah I just realized how dangerous having a singing staff would actually be so I am going to have to set that aside until a later date. A search for it could become quite a nice story line or something. I replaced it with a The Death-Speech Gemstone, Hearthstone Amulet-Orichalcum, and a level 3 Manse. Here is what I got so far, still got to finish the combat section which I will do after I come back later today.

Krylo
09-12-2010, 10:32 AM
Alright, reworked some.

CHANGES:

--FIXED ISSUES. I vaguely remember back in the day having dumped all my BP into starting essence and then changing that and not correcting derived values/charms. That'd be why things were wrong. Regardless, I removed essence flow and gave myself the six dodge I should actually have.

--REMOVED TWO CHARMS. Dropped Dodge and Sailing excellency. Neither was a pre-requisite for the dodge and sailing charm I actually wanted, and my mitigation can be handled better with parries... and really if we're starting in the east any sailing charms are basically pure fluff.

--ADDED THREE CHARMS. Between essence flow and the two above I had three charms to add. I chose Fivefold Bulwark (always good to have this or flow like blood if you're outnumbered), Graceful Crane (fits the character and her sea legs, plus it's awesome), and Hungry Tiger (need some offense, don't I?)

--SLIGHTLY SHUFFLED SOME SKILL POINTS. Dropped throw to 1 and increased presence to 3 (Fluff reasons, exalted pirate should really be a pirate captain eventually). Checked skill point math to make sure it was still ok. It is. (40 points - 10 into favored - 18 starting = 12 from BP as I calculated).

--MADE SHEET EASIER TO READ. Spiffed up my charm descriptions, and included page numbers. Also included stats next to my equipment in the equipment section, instead of only listing the derived stats in the static values section.

--FIXED AN ERROR OR TWO OC MISSED. Noticed my thrown knife accuracy was too high even before I removed a point of thrown. There was something else I can't think to remember right now, too. Must not have been important.

--REALIZED I AM RIDICULOUSLY STRONG FOR A 5'6" 100lb TEENAGE GIRL. Seriously, my combined strength + athletics is 8. She can tie a horse shoe in a pretzel. Check page 127 if you don't believe me. It amuses me to no end, and you can expect me to probably drop another point into strength and athletics eventually.

--CHANGED MY TOTEMIC ANIMA. Inanimate objects are lame for totems. Made it one of the giant siaka sharks instead. Much more awesome.

Unrelated to the sheet, I also came up with a reason for my western sea pirate girl would be in the east through some playing with her backstory.

Flufflite version because I don't want to make a fluffheavy one: She was born and raised on a pirate ship, and learned how to fight, raid ships, and helped out around the ship in general. Unfortunately her ship had the misfortune of getting to a merchant vessel just before the Lintha did.

She exalted.

However, the Lintha aren't mere mortal pirates, and a bunch of demon blooded pirates are a little much for a fresh exalted to handle on her own. As a result she was only able to save herself, and her family died.

Shortly after this event she began to have visions of powerful weapons and artifacts in a place she somehow knew was Denandsor. Turns out her exaltation came from a night caste who had lived there before everything went to hell. Not that she realizes that. She just knows that she knows.

Knowing she can't take on the Lintha herself, she's headed on out thaddaway to pick her up something capable of destroying the Lintha. She's also realized she's going to need help with that, though. She doesn't know much about relics and artifacts, and she realizes some faint wispy memories locked away in her exaltation probably won't be enough.

Minimal alteration necessary to put her in the east and make her willing to work with the rest of you scrubs.

EDIT: Wanted to read krogo's sheet and it was a bitch so I adapted it to my template, which isn't really mine it's from some older RP we had on the forums. I think it's PF's or Raiden's or something I don't remember. Uploaded his sheet here.

I didn't check it for anything though as I am tired and blah blah blah fuck you.

I DID HOWEVER notice that he has no perfect defenses. Friendly suggestion--drop some of those social abilities, and maybe peony blossom if you'd rather do that, and pick up parry melee charms up to heavenly guardian defense. Defensive charms are generally more important than offensive ones.

Indeed, you only want to use offensive ones when you either know you'll get to move again before your opponent (thus restoring DV and your ability to use a defensive charm when he does attack), it is in a combo, or you are slaughtering extras/mortals.

Getting hit in exalted is a bad thing. Even with your pretty awesome armor.

Overcast and Krylo know more about the system than I do so I'd listen to them in matters of practicality, I spent the evening trying to internalize the system and it does favor defense over offense both in effect and necessity. Even a high level solar will get diced to ribbons by cannon fodder without some means of consistent defense.

Also, getting hit is never good, even in super heavy artifact plate. What high levels of armor do is allow you to risk getting hit a bit more often. You really can't rely on armor as your sole method of damage mitigation however. Perfect defenses are very handy for those times when something atrocious is about to crumple your sun child into an unidentifiable paste, the ability to basically say "nuh uh, you didn't hit me" is, well, godlike.

Also, Arhra seems MIA as he's the only one who hasn't submitted a character sheet yet. We can run this with 4 people but his last post strongly suggested that he's still interested so its likely he's simply preoccupied.

@Krylo: your description of the second excellency on your character sheet is incorrect, you can only spend a number of motes equal to your combined ability+skill, not twice that as you've stated. Also, if you use both the first and second excellencies together this becomes the cumulative limit of essence. for example if you had 5 strength and 3 melee, and wanted to use a combo consisting of the first and second excellencies you could spend up to 8 motes totals between the 2.

like 4 extra dice and 2 extra successes, or 3 extra sucesses and 2 extra dice etc.

Also, if I remember correctly, flame piece ammunition is rather expensive to procure, especially outside the South, and your resources of 2 would suggest that funding your 20 flame pieces might prove difficult.

@Krogoth: You must have a motivation for your character, you can't be a Solar exalt without some sort of driving force and a great destiny, not only is it integral to developing a methodology for your character, but its necessary for several in game mechanics as well. It could be as simple as "Conquer Creation in the name of the Unconquered Sun" or as esoteric as "Enlighten the essence of mankind in order to supplant their reliance on supernatural forces."

In the same vein you should describe the appearance of your character.

Also, with resources of 0 your character is a destitute vagabond with no resources except what they carry on their back. You have no home or money.

also also, your Flaw must be connected to your primary virtue, which must be a virtue rated 3 or higher, since only your valor is rated 3 or higher, it is automatically your primary virtue, so heart of flint is not an option. Choose an appropriate limit break.

@Overcast: Pretty sure you're an Eclipse caste, but if you could fill that in on your character sheet it'd be sweet.

@Rapter: Since you seem to be basing your defense on resistance charms I'd suggest taking the Adamant Skin Technique perfect defense, other than that looks fine now.

Ahh yeah just realized I only went over the knife in regular mode due to extreme laziness.Which reminds me that I might due some house keeping to my own sheet to make sure I didn't do it to myself.

In the meantime I would offer Arhra some extra time on the thought that not only does he have reality to contest with but is currently running two role-plays and being badgered by people like me on occasion to make sweet drawings of amorphic adorability.

Will do some checks after I'm done looking over mine again.

Arhra is ALSO working on a character.

He's trying to get magitech on a starting character. Obviously he will be Twilight.

Perfect Solar Circle assuming OC is Eclipse as he didn't fill that part in, but he totally looks like one other than the not having any actual eclipse charms.

Edit @ Funks: Fixed on the charm.

As for the flame pieces, they're a stylistic/fluff choice more than anything (as are the knives), meant to emulate classic pirates with their old muzzleloading flintlock pistols. Fire and drop. I will be using them rarely, and I'm ok with them being empty quite often. I imagine they would have been quite important/useful to her before she exalted and learned, 'fuck you, I have a sword' style, though.

Though I have a feeling Arhra's twilight will take care of reloading issues.

Edit: And the ammo is a two resource cost (meaning it would break me) outside the south, and a one resource cost (meaning I could buy out of pocket easily) inside the south.

Edit 2: A lot of my character is pure fluff really. Archery with flame piece spec? Fluff. Point of throw even though I already have archery? Fluff. High presence? Fluff (useful too, but that has nothing to do with my decision there). More awareness than I'll ever need? Fluff. Sail skill in an eastern setting? Obviously fluff. Etc. etc.

Ok, its no big rush for Arhra but he hasn't posted in a few days so I was trying to bait him out of the internet-woods and into my trap, which mainly consists of polite requests for a character sheet.

and breast plate jokes.

But ok, the numbers look relatively ok except for the things I've mentioned in my previous post. I've got a few backstories to work with so I'll start to contrive a reason for everyone to be where they gon' be.

Krylo: Nalera, estranged Night caste pirate from the West. Seeks the means to destroy the Lintha who robbed her of the only family she ever knew. Has likely sailed the breadth of Creation driven only by whispered fragments of prophesy and promise.

Overcast: Syren, an ambitious diplomat who seeks to unite creation and? Needs more information.

Rapter: Voros, a Sijanese funerist turned priest of the Unconquered sun, possessed of a driving necessity to rid false religions from Creation. You might want to take some dots in lore and occult if you haven't all ready to substantiate your role as a funerist of Sijan as they are rather learned people.

Krogoth: Karim, a Linowan war clan leader who exalted amidst a fierce battle with the hated Haltans. His dreams of the first age have shown him the path to his own burial grounds deep within the endless forests of the East, he now seeks to use his newfound Celestial power to? Needs a motivation!

Also, sailing could prove very useful as a matter of fact. There may be more trees in the East than grains of sand in the South, but there are also many rivers that run for thousands of miles through important territories, so a good knowledge of sailing will come in handy sooner than you think.

Heart of Flint wasn't mine! Krylo just didn't change it over I'd guess. I have Berserk Rage of Valor.

Thanks for the conversion though krylo and the mentioning Perfect Defense instead of mostly offense. Sorry you tried to read mine, I have a very weird method of doing things sometimes.

I was going to ask you about the Motivation. I was going to have it Conquer the Haltan Republic but wasn't sure if that was adequate enough.

The other thing I was going to ask is do you need Manse to use Hearthstones? Or can you use them without it?

Alright, here is the latest version of Kahrim.

Got the motivation and physical description up

Removed 1 from Resistance and Preformance and put 1 in Sail and 1 in Specialties for 2(If I have that right, that 1 point = 2 specialties for caste/favoured abilites. Figured since Lionwan's are sorta pirates made Sail favuored and survival not anymore.)

Changed Influence to Resources.

Added some items. Not sure If I did that part right though.

Took 2 Axes since they would be for throwing and 1 Ward charm for fair folk.

Now just need to figure out intimacies. Was going to make it Axes and my familiar wolf. IF that's alright

Sorry meant to do a lot of things when I was suddenly jarred with the fact that I have a physical fitness inspection in a few days that I am doomed to fail and took a moment to run and see how badly I was going to fail. Anyway barebones backstory.

Born in An-Teng. Pro-Realm parents, raised to be an unassuming beuracrat and servant who would do well for their family until he was married into another. Did so, but always had dreams of being some kind of hero, and so practiced martial arts in his spare time.

Scarlet Empress disappears and his little town starts showing some of its true colors, dissenting words start circulating the common people, only exacerbated by the attitude of the Dragon-Blooded on vacation. Though he had the foresight to see that this small incursion would probably just get everyone killed.

They'd need something much bigger, they'd have to wait.

So he set out his bureaucratic skills to breaking down the resistance. Spoke around the commoners with the ideas he knew were true. He even dared to speak up to the Dragon-Blooded(in a fully respectful fashion of course) to tone down on their revelries until power was consolidated.

In the end it fell down to one dire group, who confronted him and seemed set on silencing him. So he spoke, he picked at their arguments and tore them to bits and pieces, dismantling their social group till the leader had no loyalty left, and in the end their leader was all that was left and got his ass handed to him before he was turned into the Realm.

Though he was surprised to find when he got home that he had a caste mark under his cap. His dog had started talking to him. And that old chain that had seemed just some odd family heirloom resonated with a sort of power that drew him take it. He had Exalted.

With it came power. Understanding. He'd stopped a small uprising, but it had a point. The Realm was crumbling, and even when the Scarlet Empress was around it was an imperfect nation. He could do better. The whole of Creation could be united. The time had arrived for a new world, a new nation, a new age.

The first step was allies, so he took off to the Scavenger Lands, the best place he could start for those to stand with him against the Realm. Though he's recently been pulled off just a bit further East. Some internal feeling drawing him to a destiny he doesn't understand.

And now to work on that character sheet.

Here is what I've been working on for a backstory. Let me know how it looks.

Kahmir was born in Linowan, his father was killed in battle with the Haltan and had a dislike for them from the start. He was quiet skilled with the Axe at a young age and went through training and his early days with 2 close friends. The first was killed in an early battle, turning Kahmir's dislike for the Haltan to hatred.

As Kahmir became more stronger and more skilled, he attracted followers to him, advancing his status from warrior to a leader of a small band. He continued to fight and battle the Haltan earning praises for his victories and shame for his defeats, though even still is War Clan grew.

On the day his world would change for ever, he happened upon the despised Haltan's encroaching on Linowan territory. Though outnumbered by the Haltan's, with such an action taking place before them they had nothing to do but attack them. During this combat his other friend fell to a blade of the Haltan and shortly after Kahrim exalted, slaying the Haltan's in a orgy of blood and death.

With the Haltan routed, Kahmir left the battlefield vowing to destroy the Haltan republic and claiming the land for the Linowan people. That night he received a dream of his tomb, hidden in the endless forest. His Tomb. The morning after he ventured to the tomb, claiming the artifact's buried there.

He realized that the first steps to destroy the Haltan Republic had started, the next step was obtaining more powerful allies to help. The Day's of the Haltan Republic were numbered, as Kahmir vowed he would bring it down.

....................
-Metric, "Black Sheep"

He couldn't make her smile anymore. Though his eager fingers worked the flesh of her pale lips into a sick semblance of a grin, her eyes could only stare in cloudy absence. He stared in marvel and disappointment as his fingers left pale white blotches on her unblemished skin; saddened as he was by her sudden lack of vitality.

He soon tired of his labors as he lie down beside her prostrate form, both naked and shimmering in the dim moonlight that filtered through the reed-hut walls. His lungs exhaled a fiery pain as he realized with childish surprise that he'd been holding his breath since before he'd throttled her.

He panted quietly in desperate depression and elation, the black splotches of his air-deprived vision intermingling with the hallucinogens in his blood stream to call forth a plethora of delightful and terrifying visions. He'd grown accustomed to these mad visitors, after each episode he'd be accosted by phantasms of screaming children and women who's faces were now contorted by death and decay; no longer fit to satiate his needs. They never spoke, only wailed silently in a beautiful cacophony of spent violence.

That wonderful, horrifying silence was suddenly shattered by a low whisper of incomprehensibly, sickening sweetness. His eyes, pupils already dilated by chemicals, now bolted wide open in fear.

"Such beauty, so rare to these eyes. Were that I could see more my love..."

He jumped to his feet, still muddle headed and dizzy as he surveyed the tiny hut. At first there was nothing save the stationary traipsings of the rude dwelling and the corpse of his latest victim, all else was shadows and silver moonlight.

"But I can offer you more, so much more than these ephemeral pleasures."

The voice came from everywhere and nowhere at once, he began to cry uncontrollably as he huddled in a corner, sure that he'd finally succumbed to complete madness, his tears of terror soon gave way to crazed elation as a slow, sobbing laughter rattled in his chest.

"Who... who are you? Have you come to eat my dreams? Come to steal my soul?" He questioned between giggles.

"No my love, I come to give you teeth with which to eat the soul of the world."

....................

The long moment of helpless terror subsided as her final breath left her mouth. She was suddenly detached, free from the physical pain of dying but also from the horrible unease of living. She could see her silent form kicking in uncontrollable spasms beneath the man's bulk, could see the spreading puddle of liquid forming around her crotch, she almost laughed at the absurdity. Bereft of dignity even at the last, she mused, a fitting end to something as worthless as herself.

"But is it worth that you desire?"

She sat cross legged across from her cooling corpse, wondering how one went about the proper process of dying as the strange voice came from beyond the thatched reed door. She turned her head to regard the strange newcomer cooly, his face an emotionless mask depicting an ecstatic, skeletal grin.

"Worth? No... no not that." She replied, realizing that she was now truly dead and likely facing some demon employed to eternally torment her for her sins.

"Then what? Death without purpose? Would you sit here idly as you die, used and abandoned by yet another?"

"I think..." she said quietyly, "That I would rather see them die as I am."

"Who?"

"All of them, every last one of them."

The mask seemed to grin a bit wider at that.

....................

Her waking eyes opened once more into the strangeness of life. She lie in a thin gown, soaked in her own filth. Her skin was cold as death, and yet she could feel no chill, could not remember warmth... could not remember her name, only the terrible thing that had taken it and the grinning mask.

And so, Seven Harmonious Melodies of Despair drew her Second Breath. She felt a dull ache in her forehead which she instinctively rubbed with her fingers, coming away with a smear of bright crimson. She arose from the floor and tore away her filthy clothing, naked to all Creation and pale as the baleful visage of Luna. A terrible thirst at once overtook her, a need to feed, to destroy, an all encompassing vision of the Thing Before The Gods that had devoured her name and darkened her soul. She searched frantically for her prey, for the man that had taken her mortal life, her eyes those of the hawk.

Her predators gaze fell upon something pulsating in the corner of the hut. It looked living, purple veins visible beneath what appeared to be pale flesh. Throughout its writhing mass she could discern the forms of flesh, breasts, hands, lips and obscene things, all incoherently pulsating. Such a thing was an abomination before the nature of Creation, and yet she did not quail, indeed she could no longer understand fear, nor could she draw a link to the Creation that had birthed her only to see her abused, raped and eventually slain.

Somewhere within her newly darkened soul a beast growled, a need for vengeance and a sudden insight that this thing was all that remained of her murderer culminated in an uncontrollable urge to rend and tear.

Her limbs now felt horribly strong, her fists like jagged iron or hardened bone, deadly as any blade. She struck at the strange chrysalis with the might of the horrid dead, blow after crushing blow punching softly into the gently weeping flesh to no avail. Seven Harmonious Melodies did not know how long she raged in her dark furor, only that her reverie of useless violence was stopped by a dry whisper.

"It would seem that Dusk suits you well sister." the voice rasped.

Seven Harmonious Melodies turned once more to the flimsy door to see a giant clad in black steel that whimpered quietly, his face covered by a mask of bone fashioned in the manner of Linowan shamans. She did not reply, only regarded him coldly with her new eyes, uncaring of her nudity.

"Our cousin slumbers in his demon-womb, neither you nor I know any craft that can break him from it before its allotted time. You have more pressing matter to attend to besides; vengeance needs must wait for an opportune moment." The dead whisper spoke.

Seven Deadly Melodies did not immediately reply, instead she turned to the chrysalis and embraced it, her body mingling with the mad physiology of the accursed thing. She kissed it softly on one of its lips and whispered gently to the slumbering beast inside. "I will come for you cousin, and no matter what power you might possess I shall drink your blood, I shall eat your heart as you watch."

The giant clad in weeping steel approached her and offered a black cloak. "I am known as The Thing Beside The Grave, sister, and I have much to teach you."

The two left in utter silence, the remote hut now forever tainted by the convergence of the greatest evils in creation. If anyone from the nearby river settlement knew what transpired there that night they had the good sense to not get involved, as the fledgling Deathknight made haste to her new dark master, the thing that grew in demon flesh dreamt of blood and murder and a great many things far worse.

It's more a matter of putting together a character who can do useful stuff instead of throwing together a mess that won't be much fun to play. I've don't have much experience with Exalted (and especially with most of the things Twilights mess around with!) so I needed to scope out what is actually possible with a starting character in order to decide on a background.

As it turned out, being a sorceror is nearly impossible (and I'd want to do the initiation in game anyway) and magitech is prohibitively difficult as well (and not all that exciting).

The core motivation's decided on - helping mortals help themselves by giving them the tools they need to better themselves. Background will definitely involve a lot of hard work to get where they were before the Exaltation. Details of the Second Breath are being tricky to work out right now.

The main thing to do is decide between starting with an artifice focus - a Lookshy sorceror-assistant who assisted in scavenging ruins - or more of a medicine focus with an alchemist (might go Haltan instead in that case).

Funka Genocide

Its not terribly difficult to start as a sorcerer, you simply have to accept that you're not going to be as proficient in mundane tasks as the rest of your group. You won't need to arm wrestle Yozis, that's what your dawn caste are for, or argue the finer points of celestial law with Nara-O or what have you, you're pretty much the glass cannon.

7 points for the extra essence, probably a few points to max your occult and bam, you're a terrestrial level sorcerer. Take a few defensive charms and make sure at least one defensive rating (probably dodge) is reasonably high, then grab a couple of useful spells in addition to your terrestrial initiation charm. Feel free to fill in the holes with a few miscellaneous charms and abilities.

Pretty much all of your bonus points will get eaten by sorcery, but still its totally doable and considering the fact that you have plenty of basic skill points to go around your character won't be helpless, not to mention the fact that any weakness you have can be shored up by the other members of your circle.

Krylo
09-13-2010, 10:24 AM
you're pretty much the glass cannon.

Well not really.

More like a glass doomsday device.

Most sorcery is pretty much entirely useless in actual combat (without prep and the ability to arm wrestle yozi, anyway) because there's casting times involved and in the time you're spending casting death of obsidian butterflies or flying guillotine your intended target is either cutting your head off, shooting you in the eye, or activating their perfect defense.

And with the total lack of mote efficiency in sorcery that's pretty much unacceptable.

A combat sorcerer would be taking things like invulnerable skin of bronze or wood dragon's claw (and maybe boiling blood for an alpha strike) and combining them with celestial martial arts. They'd have to prepare all these spells before combat, though, and it'd be useless in a surprise attack.

The real power of sorcerers is doing things like making acid rain from the sky to destroy a city, summoning demons/elementals, traveling across creation in great ships, imbuing items with great power, restoring moldy and destroyed books to perfect condition, etc.

A combat sorcerer is pretty much a terrible idea.

Funka Genocide
09-13-2010, 10:52 AM
Terrestrial sorcery is only a single speed 6 shaping action I believe, I could be mistaken though.

But yeah, supplementing martial arts with close combat oriented sorcery is of course totally sweet, but its not like a skilled dawn or night caste can't keep a baddie sufficiently occupied for you to cast a terrestrial level spell. Offensive spells are also pretty useful for taking out large groups of extras (although simply beating them to death with your shoe would probably suffice.) and in larger engagements like wars and such.

Here's an example I threw together.

He pretty much suffers the same drawback as any sorcerer type character though, kind of wussified in the beginning in exchange for the promise of inevitable god mode. I kind of like your idea better though Krylo, you can always pick up the flashier and less practical spells alter and focus on the more useful ones at first. I'd probably drop my integrity charms for a few early celestial martial arts charms and swap out my range oriented spells for something more close combat oriented.

Krylo
09-13-2010, 11:00 AM
It's a speed 5 to shape, and you have to make a join battle roll when you release to decide how long the actual cast takes.

While you're shaping and rejoining battle, however, you can't activate any defensive charms, and it's obvious you are casting. This makes it pretty easy for an opponent to use, say, Flawless Archer Discipline (or some kind of horrible combo) to shoot you in the face and force you to roll a wits + occult versus 1 + whatever damage you took or give up the casting.

A dawn caste, or other combat orientated character (in our group probably me as that Krogo sucks at defense) can stunt getting in the way with their own PD or something, but that's hardly something you'd want to rely on.

But yeah, in war or with large groups of extras or when you want a city destroyed?

That's what destructive sorcery is good for.

S'Why I called them a doomsday device.

Edit: I mean combat sorcery is useful in some situations, but I would never recommend building a character around using it. More like I'd give a sorcerer I was making to destroy cities or for utility some of the cooler combat spells as an aside.

Edit 2: If memory serves flying guillotine actually says right in the description you can use it to cut the head off of an opposing army's commander. It's part of what makes it one of the most awesome spells. Blood to oil is up there too, though, as something you prepare a head of time so your first MA strike reaaaalllly puts the hurt on. Or just before you 'peacefully surrender' to the hunt so you can let them touch your exposed hand.

Oh look, a character sheet!

A few things to get sorted still with equipment, movement speeds and other weird maths-fu but that should be everything important for chargen covered.

Backstory cliff notes version is trained as a sorceror-assistant in Lookshy, tended to assist with various expeditions around the place to pry in ruins. Exalted while helping the people she was with get out of a particularly bad situation. Just after getting out of there, SUDDENLY DRAGONBLOODS (some leading the expedition probably?). Very badly wounded but managed to escape. Found and nursed back to health by a hermit couple, but scarred and still not entirely recovered.

Thought it would be interesting to have someone whose confidence was very badly shaken quite early into their Exaltation. So as the game starts, shiny Solar awesomeness begins to overcomes hesistancy and reserve.

A short term motive is to improve thaumaturgy, especially learning alchemy in order to become a better doctor. An obvious other short turn motive is finding and learning things that stop other Exalted punching one's face in. (It hurts)

I might change the name. Just picked something vaguely Japanese sounding because the people of Lookshy are all weeaboos.

You can only initially raise them to 3 and it takes 4 bonus points to raise and ability to 5. You have 4 abilities at 5, thats 16 BPs used when we only get 15. Also from what I could gather your purchased 1 extra point in a virtue (compassion) which cost 3 BP, so from what I can gather you used 19 BP, 4 over what we have to use.

Though you may want to wait for someone like Overcast or Krylo to check your sheet before you change anything to confirm, reason being I could be wrong and because they are more experienced in this matter than I am.

It only costs 1 point to raise an ability by 1 if it's a caste or favoured ability. 2 if it isn't.

Didn't look over it all yet, but I think I saw something through a quick glance. From what I remember Friendship with Animals Approach needs Majestic Radiant Presence. I'd probably replace it with Spirit Strengthens the Skin, a good fallback if Iron Skin Concentration couldn't actually save you.

Wow would you look at that, then I got one small change to make. Which is to raise performance to 5. That will cover the 4 BP I invested in abilities when I though raising Presence to 5 would cost 4 BP, rather than 2.

It's been errata'd since it was a typo. Why on earth would a Survival charm need something from the Presence tree after all.

Okie dokie, kind of debating whether or not to stat an rp thread or just wait until Saturday.

I guess we can use this thread to post any pertinent out of character stuff or bits of fluff that don't happen during our play sessions.

Also, its 2pm PST Saturday afternoon. I've left that time slot hanging for long enough that I consider it official now. I'd like everyone to set aside at least 2 hours and we can run longer so long as everyone agrees, but I really need everyone to show up on time and not bail early. If you're going to miss a session for whatever reason, post here or send me an email at

erickdiaz84@gmail.com

Don't sell my account to spam bots either or I'll cut you.

As long as I and by extension the group has a heads up we can think up something. If you feel comfortable with someone else playing your character that's totally ok, if not then I'll play it by default in the best method I can come up with. You'll likely face an experience penalty for being a no show, but not so severe that you'll fall behind after a single missed session.

If you just don't show up then I'll probably try to replace you.

I might have to miss a session here and there as well, so I'll post in this thread, send pms or emails or what have you. If a weekly schedule becomes to stringent I think it might be nice to have longer sessions in longer intervals, like once every 2 weeks for 4 or 5 hours.

If any of this is unacceptable or impossible let me know and maybe we can work something out, other than that I'm pretty excited to get started and hope everyone else is too. I'll likely post more fluff throughout the remainder of the week, feel free to do the same regarding your character's exploits prior to the campaign.

Geh the bastards didn't put it in the scrolls, but indeed one of the writers have taken that to point so blah blah. Will in depth everyone's if I get the chance before Saturday arrives, but this week is murdering me in a huge way so it may not occur for a little bit.

Though I should be available for that Saturday meeting no matter what.

All good except raptor just staring at the basics(haven't looked at the items that hard). Took one more intimacy than you have the compassion for and that shot your bonus points a little. Just get rid of one and you should be fine. Also took more languages than you have the linguistics to learn same fix.

This week is going to be fine, but I seriously doubt I'll have the time on the 25th - family is visiting for the weekend.

I'll see if I can get a proper backstory done tomorrow. Meaning to properly flesh out that manse too. I imagine it as something a bit like a Mayan temple made of huge, carved stone blocks that can burrow underground and also re-arrange itself somewhat. A manse that has the power of moving gigantic stone blocks around is just begging to be used for that.

I still need to settle where exactly it's located though. >> <<

Hmm, I think I am going to re-arrange things a little. I think I've overspecialised a little and also want to decrease the Medicine focus for now to better show wanting to learn more about it.

Also a little tempted to go for Compassion 5. Although that might not be a good idea.

Edits should be done tomorrow.

I also wanted to check if I could take (Blunt Trauma) as a Martial Arts specialty? I like the picture of punching and kicking things but also using improvised weapons a lot. Seemed more interesting than just taking (In Armour).

Funka Genocide
09-17-2010, 12:02 PM
The skill of martial arts is pretty much at its core the skill of causing blunt trauma to an animate object, so I mean come on... a bit general there for a specialization.

Try unarmed, improvised weapons, clubs etc.

Arhra
09-17-2010, 06:19 PM
To explain that specialty a little more, I was trying to exclude martial arts weapons (and probably clinches as well). I'd forgotten about a few that are blunt weapons though.

Although yeah, it still seems wider than taking (Fighting Unarmed).

Actually, on that front, do gauntlets or iron boots still count as fighting unarmed?

Funka Genocide
09-17-2010, 09:02 PM
Yep. They just supplement your basic unarmed attacks but use the same maneuvers and techniques.

Also, Going to take the rest of the night and do some writing and scenario planning, I'll try to post stuff here as I go along.

Arhra

Really reshuffled everything since a few things were bugging me.

Just want to check a Craft specialty in (Precision Mechanisms) is alright. It looks like it's fine as applied to Craft (Air), but it might be a little too broad with regard to magitech on account of things like automata and fuel-bolt launchers.

I'm putting together a little profile some time tonight.

We should really talk about how our starting pairs met. Interesting stories there, I'm sure.

Kay, I'll get started on that.

The Unconqued Sun rose above the western sea, his rays illuminating the glittering jewel of the west and rousing the privateers aboard the Siakal's Brood.

The ship rocked lazily in the great ocean as the men aboard switched shifts; the skeleton crew whom had manned the ship for the night moving below decks to get a precious few hours of sleep, while the proper crew prepared the Brood for the day's piracy. Riggings were tied and untied, the sails unfurled, anchor weighed, and thousands of other small tasks preparing the ship for sail were performed, all the while a teenage girl sat in the crow's nest.

It was an unusual sight on the western seas, an attractive young woman aboard a ship--and not for poor reasons. Such a woman could enrage the storm mothers and bring even the mightiest ship to ruin. This particular girl, however, was the daughter of the ship's tya, and rumor abound that the father may be the Brood's captain. Either way, she was trained in all manner of shipboard operation, from directing the sails to gain clean speed even against the winds, to wielding a chopping sword in ship to ship combat and as valuable a member of the crew as any man.

Even so, she would soon have to take the tya tattoos or forsake the life of a sailor forever. There was no time to think on such things today, however, for her sharp eyes spotted something in the distance long before the sun could even reach its apex.

"GUILD SHIP! 40 KNOTS TO PORT!" came her cry from the nest, to be echoed by sailors on deck until the entire ship had been roused into a flurry of action, redirecting the proud ship and preparing to ram and board, as Nalera scrambled down the riggings to the deck with an agility rare even amongst practiced sea men.

It was not long before battle was met, and Nalera stood with the other sailors of the Siakal's Brood as they cut down the guildsmen and their hired hands, each murder sanctified to the goddess from which their ship took its name, their bloodied corpses falling into the sea. The battle was well fought and easily won with nary an injury to the practiced crew of the Siakal's Brood.

However, celebrations were not to last, as a great sea beast rose over the horizon dragging a ship behind it, seen too late with no one manning the nest during the battle.

The Captain hissed but a single word, with equal parts fear and hatred in his voice, "Lintha."

And then the demon pirates were upon them.

They leapt onto the deck from the sea with their hooked swords, giving away their demonic and wyld twisted nature. Nalera tried to fight them off with her crew, but she--and they--were but mortals, powerless against the primordial blood, diluted as it was, pumping through the Lintha's veins. One after another she saw those she called family cut down with no chance of survival.

The Lintha took no prisoners.

She felt the hot sensation of a blade tearing through her abdomen, biting deep, and fell to her knees. The wound was deep but it wasn't fatal. The next, however, would be. The Lintha before her raised its blade and swung it down toward her throat, meaning to, perhaps, take her head as a trophy. She closed her eyes, and thought but one thing, 'No.'

The blow never came. She opened her eyes to see her sword interposed between herself and the Lintha, but something was off. She didn't have the strength for that, and yet she held back the Lintha's attack as easily as she might stop a child's. The wound on her abdomen, too, seemed to hurt less, and her entire body was filled with warmth and light.

Looking up, she could see the sun at its apex, shining down on her, as she now shined against the darkness of the Lintha. And then there was nothing but golden light, with streaks of red, and the beauty of the sea at noon. It was as if her body was moving of its own accord, as if she was not herself, but someone else. Someone older. Someone powerful.

When she regained herself she stood surrounded by the bodies of Lintha pirates, where she had slain them one after another until they had fled, leaving her alone on the sinking guild boat with the bodies of both her crew and the guildsmen. She was the only survivor.

She wanted to cry, to fall down to her knees and weep and bemoan the death of all that she had known, but she had no time for that. The ship would sink to the bottom of the sea, and she would be on it if she allowed herself to stop. Cutting free a raft from the guild ship she jumped onto it before she allowed herself to feel the pain.

It must have been days then, drifting alone at sea, questioning why she lived. How she had lived. For what purpose was she spared. However, the only thing she could feel other than sorrow was hatred. Hatred for the pirates that had taken everything from her. Hypocrisy, perhaps, after her own life, but pure and true all the same. She did not know what she was, but she knew she was strong now. She knew what she would do.

She would hunt them down, each and every one, and she would kill them.

She also knew, however, that as powerful as she was now, it still wasn't powerful enough to take on the entire Lintha family, but there were memories that weren't here. Inklings of places, ideas, of power. And that was what she needed. Power. Her memories told her of two such places near where she was now, an island and a place deep beneath the sea which would rise to the surface for her. She went to each in turn, each a manse and each granting her hearthstones and even a wavecleaver that felt like it belonged to her.

However, she didn't find true power there. She knew where she could, though. A place, far away, in the east. Denandsor.

Hocking the minor treasures she had found in her two old manses, she bought fare as a passenger to the City of the Steel Lotus in An-Teng, and it was from there she would make her way to Denandsor. At least that was the plan, but in An-Teng her destiny would change as she met the first member of what would become her circle.

Edit: If we had an RP thread we could probably work out the meetings there but Funka is apparently lazy.

In An-Teng the individual does not matter. What matters is the family. Every one part will work to advance their name. This is something that is ingrained in youth, and something that carries on in adulthood. An unavoidable truth of life. Syren Bamulase had been discouraged from rash moves his whole life, his family the kind who made slow meticulous marriages and trades that may raise their family name to a new rank of security next generation, and so his entire existence had been boring; shoved into government work as a bureaucrat to serve as a bridge for the family into more important individuals that they could work their way close to and eventually sucker into becoming Bamulase's as well.

And yet somehow he still found time to dream. Every night staring up after school and then later in life work at that shining chain that hung above their hearth, a symbol meant to make him think of the unity of family, but one that instead made him wonder how powerful a man had to be to wield such a magnificent weapon.

In dreams he found escape, wandering the wilderness from time to time practicing forms he saw some of the Immaculate Order using, but not actually understanding them. Picking up a dog whom he wrestled and scuffled with, and even secretly stashing away money to buy little martial arts items like a fighting chain, much lighter than the one at home, but it was a start.

He likely would have carried on like this forever, maybe even trying to plead his way into the Immaculate Order, if only just to learn a form to even his playing field with the Dragon Blooded enemies he may face of some grand martial hero, but then the Scarlet Empress disappeared.

The effect in his little town was odd, some folks looking to work their way into the Dragon Blooded families to get some gambit on the Realm at large(his family) others, after years of having to deal with the crap of Dragon Blooded vacationers, began to plan revolt. Still others had darker plans, in their little cults below their households, but then Syren wasn't aware of those ones yet. What he knew was that he could read in the documents he looked over the plans of a whole town, and knew that if it came down to civil war and revolt that they would likely all perish under the military scrutiny of the Realm. An-Teng, bureaucratically, had the total power to break from the Realm without the organizing influence of the Empress behind them, but that was as a whole, if they started bouncing ragtag rebels in every small town East of Steel Lotus they would systematically be eliminated. It threatened his family, his dreams, and even his life. The Realm, just as discerning in their bureaucrats as he, also saw the threat and began to push their thumb down over the town, but that only exacerbated the land, those who wanted to rise up gaining new evidence with every martial action.

Though he had no idea just what he could do, at first anyway. This needed some kind of hero who could rise up and change the direction of this slowly damning scene, and in his mind the only hero he had was that martial master he had been trying to become. Fighting would do no good, not yet, but he had to do something. Anything was better than standing by.

So he took advantage of his only other marketable skill, social interaction. He would spend the time he usually used training speaking to people, planting ideas and proof of what would happen if they moved by themselves. Breaking loyalties to leaders, or leaders from their flocks and dismantling the resistance group by group. He spoke up, mostly through letters, to the Dragon Blooded with respectful requests of things they may do to help ease the situation. Somehow winning a few good battles when he started seeing less military attention, and even less obnoxious vacationers.

The scene was advancing grandly, but there was one element he could not have seen even through the paperwork. Cultists. Yozi cults were not so unusual in An-Teng, something that likely came with the regular trade with the Lintha or just the odd nature of the Tengenese in general. Either way they had risen up with their robes and weapons looking to confront him on his way home, kill him, and let the town fall into the kind of chaos they could benefit from.

The social enemy was not just strong in their beliefs, they were fanatical. Logical proof might not nearly be enough to get through to them. He needed backgrounds, understandings, individual investigations. He had about ten seconds while their leader monologued. It came to him in a flash, some sort of intuitive understanding of why they were all here, and how he should act to inspire them. Greater than just gleaning information by sight, stronger...almost magical. He spoke loudly past their leader almost immediately, his words breaking at weak points in the individuals of the cult. Scratching open old psychological wounds, and making new ones in suspicion of how they spent their lives. The leader tried to rally them, working to keep them loyal, but the assault of words from Syren was tearing the cult apart at the seams. Until he was all alone.

Staring at each other the man was a raging mass of fury. His whole organization reduced to one, his gods would not find this pleasing at all. He only had one thing left to offer, so he ran forward and attempted to stab the charismatic bastard who ruined his life. Though where his knife went, there was just air. And where his head was there was suddenly a fist. Then a foot where his gut was. Then an elbow where his back was. Just as systematically as he reduced the man's social group to ruin, Syren did the same to the man himself. Leaving one beaten bastard lying on the ground weeping. No longer a threat much to anyone.

Back home he got undressed, the strain of the day finally starting to catch up with him, and as he removed his working hat he found beneath something a bit odd. A golden symbol, a ring with a disc within. He had Exalted.

The revelation was quite shocking to him, the talking dog didn't help much either, his whole world was spinning as he tried to make a pure understanding of what was happening. Though even before he could do that his family was badgering him with more of their crap, talking about how he had been too rash in the past few weeks, how he was going to settle down this instant and that they had found a girl to marry him to that would be good for the family.

He saw the girl. His family could rot. He stole the heirloom and left the next day. He was meant for greater things than to be locked in that little town to waste away what life he had trying to advance a group of people without the ambition to take risks. He had a plan, with the Scarlet Empress gone there was a vacuum of power. Under the vacuum some families looked to fill the space, others looked to split off entirely. It was the perfect time to prey on such social weaknesses, to unite the aching masses finally broken from their dalliance from that damned woman. Somewhere in him he knew this place had once been united, and it could be so again. He was going to be the one to do it.

So he took off to the City of the Steel Lotus and jumped on the next ship East, looking to see if he could get to the Scavenger Lands. At least that was the plan, but on those shifting waters his destiny would change as he met the first member of his circle.

Well it didn't. Me being a lazy git had a lot to do with it though.

Pretty much any time on Friday will work for me, on account of me living in the future and it being Saturday.

And after the time of this post on any day except your Wednesday should be fine.

So I doubt this matters, but I got a job and can't get on until 5 (3 PDT, 1 hour later than normal) this saturday (and possibly more saturdays, I don't know).

So, I'm guessing this is dead on account of no Storyteller, yes?

Hey I was running into some serious brain death and considerable hurdles in tactical application of the umpteen hojillion rules, items and abilities printed throughout the dozens of books. I've decided that I need to be more familiar with the systems before I can really do anything.

If you guys are still interested be on the lookout for a story related update here, followed by a new thread in the rp section. But yeah, I still don't know how combat works or how to coordinate even small scale battles. I guess some practice would be the best thing, but I feel like a jackass doing things improperly.

Well, I guess it might be too much trouble if you're struggling with the system that much. I have to admit I don't quite have my head around it either.

What does everyone else think?

I want to keep playing regardless.

I want to keep playing as well, but the system is a difficult one to wrap your mind around. Good thing to know I wasn't the only one struggling with it.

I'm in.

I could also help design some antagonists until you get the hang of it, and/or do some combat practices so we can explore the mechanics a bit more.

I'm not expert either, having only had a couple of chances to play (and none of them getting very far), but I seem to have a better grasp than a lot of the players, so.

ok now its just a matter of finding some time to devote to this. Despite the obvious assumption, I'm a pretty busy dude. But I'll sit down and write some stuff up this weekend. I'll troll aim for you guys and hit you up for ideas and whatnot.

I could help out. I've been running a weekly Exalted game for the past 2 years with mixed splats and in 2ed, so I have a bit of experience in the system since I have players that constantly make me go "Wait, you want to do what? Fuck, let me find the book."

Run mass combat, single-combat, ambushes, and so on. So if you have questions I can always help out.
