Just got this game in the mail today, and I'm really digging it. Shock troopers are OP as fuck, but I still have uses for my scouts and whatnot. Dig the leveling and equipment mechanics, which are probably more or less unchanged from the first game, which I haven't played. Story isn't anything special yet, but it's not bad, and there's some solid dialogue. One of the teachers has the same voice actor as Bender from Futurama, though, so nothing he says can be taken seriously. NOTHING. Anybody else playing it?

I want to be, but I cannot find it ANYWHERE near where I live and I don't want to purchase the digital copy from the PSN.

So, serious frowny face for me. Still, glad to hear that it is fun.

Right now my main problem with this game is that I never use half the classes. I only ever do missions with shock troopers, scouts, and a tank. It's not that those other classes aren't useful, because they are and I can see how they'd be useful, but there just seems to be much more incentive to stick with this grouping. The game grades and rewards you based on stuff like how quickly you completed a mission, so I'm not interested in classes that aren't murderkill machines.

My experience with the original Valkyria Chronicles tells me that you're missing out if you're not rockin' out with Snipers. Also, if you can excuse the mobility issues, 80% of the time going with two lancers is a more efficient way to take out tanks than using a tank.

But yeah, Shocktroopers were ridiculously overpowered in the first game and it doesn't surprise me that they've continued the trend in the second.

I have a sniper. Low health and mobility means I usually only have one in a group, though. I just file them under Scouts what with how the advanced class system in this game works.

In the first game, with a clear LOS a sniper can decimate the enemy forces with OHKOs. There still is random chance you just MISS 4 shots in a row, but the Sniper was a great unit to use multiple times in a row since once you got into a good spot you didn't have to move.

Yeah, I got one on a watchtower in the last mission, and I was cappin' everybody, even those annoying shield fuckers.

Alicia was my fleet-footed serial killer in the first game*. She could sprint ahead and murder the entire back lines without a hitch while my slower shock troopers were left gasping in her dust. I think scouts accounted for about 80% of my kills and 100% of my murders.

*I mean, her ecstasy after each kill does not hint at mental stability.

Alicia

I like her. She bakes bread now.

If you complete the Scout's Challenge in the Edy Detachment DLC and equip Alicia with the weapon you gain, she pretty much becomes an unstoppable machine of death and destruction.

I found it strangely progressive, in a way. Alicia was a fairly feminine, maternal woman with deep compassion, a cute crush and...a genocidal streak of annihilating dozens upon dozens of soldiers. It also, however, contributed to a sense of dubiousness in the cutscenes when Alicia would be all like "OMG I hate the thought of killing people, even enemy soldiers."

Actually I think in my interpretation Alicia just pretended to give a damn about deeper issues around Welkin because she desperately wanted to get into his pants, all the while secretly harboring darker desires. It's sort of a gender-reversal of the traditional storyline where the guy pretends to not be a bloodthirsty killer in order to appeal to the cultured girl. In this case, Welkin's all sophisticated and pacifistic and searching for morality while Alicia's like "Yes, I agree, war is evil, I am everything you want in a woman, so sleep with me...and please ignore the downtrodden cries of the souls of my defeated foes as we make love."

You really should get the first game. There is a badass scene involving a Welkin, a Tank , a River, and a whole shit load of surprised enemy soldiers.

As for my murderers I probably used Vyse and Aika way too much.

EDIT: OH yea, question. Is the racism like super bad like it was in the first game against the Darcis or however you pronounce their name.

From what I understand, the racism is still awful. Those filthy Darcsens still impinge on the purity of your squadron of gun-toting teenagers. Luckily, the sequel allows you to "finish the fight."

One of the main characters, Zeri, (Who is awesome solely for being voiced by Crispin Freeman) is a Darcsen, and I've got some blond jackass in my squad who apparently hates Darcsens talking shit on him in one optional cutscene. I don't use him because he's racist.

The plot of the game is that there's some civil war going on in Gallia because the lady in charge of the country is a Darcsen, so this rebel group is throwing a temper tantrum cuz they don't like Darcsens and they want her to abdicate the throne.

Isn't the main villian in this game supposed to be Hitler? Or, you know, Hitler-but-an-Animu-character?

I think it was in the first game. I don't *think* that's the case in this one, but it might be.

The first game's backdrop is more of a Russia Versus Europe with Russia invading Switzerland to get Oil Scenario. Except the oil is magical blue rocks.

THIS GAME.

THIS FUCKING GAME.

THIS GODDAMN FUCKING GAME.

The credits system is the douchiest thing in the goddamn universe. It's douchier than Captain Falcon at a frat party. It's douchier than George Bush's presidential career. It's douchier than me.

I swear to Christ this Goddamn thing is rigged so that whatever I need to advance a character to the next class they WILL NOT GET NO MATTER WHAT.

You know what game Valkyria Chrnoicles reminds me of? Hogs of War for the playstation 1. That was a fun turn-based World War one era, with classes and turn based attacks, except everyone was a pig.

The only thing that disappoints me about this game, (VC not Hogs) is the severe lack of pigs in it.
