I recently got a PS3 and so far I have NCAA Football 2010 and Madden 2010, which I love playing, and Eldar Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which really has not grabbed me. I am most definitely going to get Final Fantasy XIII in the near future. But the question remains, what other PS3 games should I get? Keep in mind that I am a fan of Japanese RPGs, adventure games like Castlevania, strategy RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics (God I still love that game), I might even try a FPS (though I usually suck at them), and sports games (though my football fix is probably satisfied for at least the next five years).
I will greatly appreciate any good advice I can get. Thank you. ;)

Valkyria Chronicles. As for fps, borderlands, modern warfare, orange box (unless you have it on PC).
I hear Uncharted is pretty good too.
FF13 you can skip or reproduce on the cheap by feeding dog shit into your PS3.

I would say get Uncharted 1 or 2 due to them being pretty fun, Infamous cause LIGHTNING, Disgaea 3 if you are a SRPG whore, and 3D Dot Game Heroes for some Zelda action. Maybe Resident Evil 5 if you have a friend to play it with and don't own it on the 360.

I was just getting ready to unload, like, 6 games. You want any of em?
Mirror's Edge
Fallout 3
MotoGP08
GTA4
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
Star wars: The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Was going to let them go for $10 each. Any of them up your alley?

I've only played a couple of them, I can second GTA 4, but as far as your preferences I think the only one I can think of that sort of fits in is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, which was like a beat-'em-up/Gauntlet clone but with RPG elements and Marvel superheroes in place of the Warrior or Elf.

I really didn't enjoy Uncharted at all aside from, I guess, the voice acting which was sort of alright.
Games on disc:
Katamari Forever
Little Big Planet
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Heavenly Sword
DLC:
Scott Pilgrim - pixelated beat-em-up
Fat Princess - an elaborate game of 'capture the flag'
Ok and FFXIII, honestly? Not that terrible. Yes the game makes a terrible impression at first and is just weirdly paced, but it is hella pretty and not that difficult.

inFamous
Disgaea 3
Assassin's Creed 1 and 2

JRPGs? There's not much on the system really. Resonance of Fate and Final Fantasy XIII are the only ones really worth talking about, unless you're into the PSO style of gameplay, in which case you might like White Knight Chronicles.

Whelp. I just traded in all those games, and Fallout 3 they wouldn't take- it apparently has $0.00 value to them. There was no point. So unfortunately, no cheapsie games from me. :(

Also, if you think Sazh is weak in battle, you're doing it wrong. (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/User:Paramina#Sazh_in_Battle)
Not mentioned in the link is how useful Byrnhildr is. She's the only summon capable of using multiple elements (fire, ice, lightning, and water, which are pretty much the ones that matter most) because of Sazh's Synergist skills.
Yeah, he takes a while to get to that point, but he's the best character in the game personality-wise to tide you over.
The lack of Demon's Souls in this thread makes me a sad panda.
I really wouldn't mention it because of a host of things. First off are a couple of glaring balance issues. I forget the name they used, but one of the magic classes is actually capable of killing the "unkillable" enemy in the beginning that's supposed to wipe you out.
Second, the game just isn't all that fun. It teaches you to be hyper-cautious and the whole thing is completely trial and error and you'll probably spend most of the game with a cap at half your health just because of how unreasonably difficult it is.
Thirdly, the rating system gets abused often enough to make you dislike the other players. When you're doing all the work and come out with a shit rating, it's just another dollop of aggravation.
We traded our copy in. Phantom gave it a lot more of a go than I did.
Edit: I know I've said it time and again and you all are probably sick of hearing it, but Flower and Folklore are two good games that represent the best uses of the SixAxis I've seen so far.
Folklore does get repetitive with combat, but it's a pretty game with good voice acting where they have it, lots of lore ranging from common to obscure and all interesting, a good story, and it presents itself well. They'll also probably be practically giving it away at this point.

So yeah the lack of demon souls and people who enjoy fun games in this thread disappoints me.
Cause seriously you listed features that made me love the game, despite being colored to your view.

To each his own. I personally hated it. Not because it was hard (although it was), but because I didn't think it was fair. I don't mind hard. I do mind when I feel like I just can't win no matter what I do.
For reference, I happened to main the broken magic class. I really wish I could remember what it was called. Royalty? It came with a really nice ring.

Royalty (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/royalty). There's a wiki for everything (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWikiRule)*TVTROPES LINK, Blues.
To contribute: I've played Infamous and enjoyed it. As the only other game I could think to recommend, I've heard good things about the Ratchet and Clank series on the PS3 (and have played the PS2 games) but they don't seem to fit OP's taste for JRPGs and FPSs, being mostly a platformer series (well, platformers with really, really big guns).

That's a lie. Nier is a good game with zero information on the Internet (unless it changed recently). :(
Edit: Speaking of, I can squeeze out a tentative recommendation for Nier. The game is depressing as watching kittens march off a cliff, but it's incredibly well-acted and the music, although it's in literal 15-second loops (I timed one) and nearly gave me a nervous breakdown the week my brother played it all night, every night, from fitting the mood of the game a little too well, is also pretty. You could do worse if you can get a prescription for Prozac.
Edit for below: About damn time. It only took them several months after the game was out.

Also, yeah, totally get Nier (http://www.gamepad-dojo.com/?p=1381). Flawed game, but also probably the most memorable game of 2010 so far. Warning: It is also depressing as fuck. That's actually one of the selling points.

Y'know, people saying InFamous was good on here actually made me go look up reviews of it, since I remember seeing six hundred commercials for it, and apparently it is some sort of sleeper hit because everybody gave it like 8s and 9s and 10s and now I'm going to go buy the game too (or maybe order it as my Jeopardy Premier Club prize, whichever comes first...)
Oh, and Nikose, the reason they probably wouldn't give you anything for Fallout 3 is that there is an updated Game of the Year version of it with all the expansions included, so the original Fallout 3 is not going for very much at all...

Demon's Souls, inFamous, Prototype, Disgaea 3 and Katamari Forever are all great games that I can recommend.
Also FF13 is terrible, but admittedly some people like it so I dunno rent it I guess. Personally feel it's absolutely abysmal. Star Ocean 4's bad too, though at least it's got better gameplay (far worse writing though, ugh creepy Japanese shit).
3D Dot Game Heroes is fun but only get it if you can find it cheap and you want a real old school throwback, it's not worth full price. Mirai in particular hated it it, but I liked it. And I think the main reason I did was I paid $20 for it, and it is worth $20.

FF13 has the same issue as Tales of the Abyss, where the cast (almost) all start off less than likable and get better through character growth. Like:
- Vanille - annoying voice, but gets better as time goes on, but still the "perky young girl" stereotype
- Hope - not a bad kid, just messed up from some pretty traumatic stuff thrown at him all at once, does some growing after an angry phase
It would be a lot worse if they weren't all acutely aware of each other's flaws, but they are and everyone ends up getting a talking-to that makes them grow up a bit if you stick around long enough.
That said, I'll come right out and say the beginning of the game is grueling, with no real sense of a place you can stop until you've already put in multiple hours. That drives a lot of people away and I have to admit that I was personally frustrated. Things also take a while to open up skill-wise, which is good in that you get a very natural learning curve, but bad in that you'll feel limited with characters like Sazh, who doesn't get his Commando role unlocked nearly fast enough when it's easily his most useful and he can out-damage any other Commando by more than double once you get Blitz.
It's not a perfect game. It does have some pretty glaring flaws. But there's a good game behind them.
Greed doesn't like the combat, which I actually thought was pretty tops, so he dislikes it more than me. Still, the pacing, both of the gameplay and story, is awful. The delivery of many things could have really been improved upon, especially if they hadn't decided they needed to start the game right in the action. You'll either love the characters, or fucking hate them. It seems to vary from person to person. Nobody hates Sahz though, and if they do they're a terrible person for it.

I'll admit a lot of what you say is true but I disagree with the magnitude of your statements. I didn't think that the characters grew much all things considered. And really if I have to put up with the "start" for the 25 hours I sunk into it, sorry, game fails. There may be good aspects to the game but they're squandered by:
a) The most ridiculous, grindy, linear start to a Final Fantasy of the entire franchise. And I mean really, we were still running down that single road when I gave up in Chapter 9. 25 hours play time.
b) A cool battle system marred by enemies with overly repetitive attack patterns. This would be bearable if they were not also ridiculous HP sinks.
c) Pretty extremely annoying melodramatic characters by most people's standards, that eventually improve at least a little bit after like 15-20 hours.
I could go on. It's just a problem when the time it takes a game to really "bloom" is an amount I could fit, like, 1-3 full other video games into. Rent the thing and if you are somehow really enjoying the first 20 hours, then buy it I guess.

The growth continues over pretty much the whole game. I'm not saying that forgives it. Just that if you make it to the end, they're all pretty okay. As much as I really hate to say this, 15-20 hours is basically where the game really begins. It's unfortunate. I don't blame all 90% of the population who drop it before getting to that point. I would have if my brother hadn't kept going on his own file and actually shown me the game was starting to get good.
All (or most of) the stuff you guys are saying about it is true. Like I said, glaring flaws. I'm just saying once things actually start cleaning up, it's a game worth playing.
I will disagree on battle, though. Yes, enemies have a lot of HP, but you get the means to do a lot of damage, even fairly early on. I also can't say I fault the attack patterns for being samey, because it's not really a "pattern" so much as they have limited move sets. It didn't really bother me, to be honest. It's not like the average soldier with a gun is going to do anything but shoot in real life, for example. They were going for a more realistic take on things that put you as a party of superhumans with unique abilities against a world of normals. Whether you actually like that idea or not is up to personal preference.
P.S. As a note, I left off when I got to Chapter 11. I get that it accounts for like half the game, but still. People complain about everything up to that point being a hallway, but when they throw you into a wide open word, you really miss that hallway. It's not that it's not pretty or well-mapped or whatever, but it's just that big and the game basically steps aside and tells you to go nuts, which you can easily do forever if you're into that kind of thing. If you just want to continue forward, though, you're SOL. You have a goal and stuff, but it's a big world and you're expected to find it on your own.
Err... That aside, I'm going to second stuff like Assassin's Creed 2 and inFamous. I'll also toss in that Castle Crashers is totally great (blue knight owns!) and will give you hours of entertainment. Also, Portal is a must-have, Mega Man 10 is love, and if you don't already have them, grab FF7, 8, and 9.

Thank you all for the advice, it has been helpful, and it has me rethinking whether to get Final Fantasy 13.
I'd say to rent it first. It's not a "not-buy" so much as it is a "come-in-informed." You'll know whether you'll stick it out by the end of the rental period. If you feel it's worth it, don't be afraid to buy. Just because I left off in Ch. 11 doesn't mean someone with more time to play will. I still liked the game at that point, and it's full of stuff to make the wide-open world worth exploring, but I ended up moving away from it because I wanted something with more structure so I had more meaningful short-term goals to let me feel accomplishment, rather than just doing marks and having the story sit off to the side and wait for me to catch up.
I don't think I'd ever tell a person to buy it off the bat, but it at least deserves a trial period to be fairly judged.
