Just got done with a fun game of L4D2 with Shyria and Mauve, and I've played with Grthwlwhathefuckstopwhiningwlms from time to time on steam as well, so a couple of us thought it sounded like it would be a ton of fun to have an NPF L4D2 night. Most of us can already find each others' profiles through the steam group Nuklear Power Forums Unlimited. This thread is here just to throw out a line and see if we have enough interest, and if we get a few replies we might schedule a night and make it happen.

I'm up for this, although my weird work hours during the week mean I could probably only play on a weekend night. Also, I've only played Versus mode once in my life so I'll probably not be of much help to anybody if we play that mode.

I'm also totally up for an NPF TF2 night if anyone else is interested.

As with the other modes, you end up doing pretty well in Versus is you consistently shoot your opponents in the face. Claws, bullets, acid spit, cars, it all works!

In all seriousness though, if you are solid in the other modes you'll do fine in Versus. There's a bit more cooperation required but thats about it.

I haven't got either game, but I just finished playing Alien Swarm and it was great :). The only games I've played online are some free MMORPG's (just a couple times though, I just can't seem to like them a lot :/), Minecraft and Serious Sam, just before AS. I want L4D, but I'll wait 'till a discount comes because I don't get a lot of money.

I'd be up for this... For both TF2 and L4D. I warn you, though, I won't talk much because I'm sick at the moment and it hurts to speak.

In TF2, my career class is Medic, and I typically snipe with actual people (L4D), but I'm flexible enough to take other roles if someone is deadset on being the sniper/Medic. And having teammates that attract infected is fine by me... They attack you and not me. :dance:

I kinda hijacked my brother's steam account (he never uses it and he had games already on it) so while it might look like I've played a bunch of TF2, that couldn't be farther from the truth. However I have played L4D2 on my 360, so at least I'll know what I'm doing there :D.

Anyone know how to organize group events in Steam? As far as setting up an event specifically for the NPF Steam group, my guess is that you have to be an admin to do that. So that's up to... let's see... Synk, 01d55, Fifth, BabyBahamut, and EVILNess.



As far as actual dates and times go, I work an evening shift, so unless the east coast people wanna wait until three a.m. to play, it's probably best if I join in a weekend game.

Lag will probably be a problem no matter what we do, since we're so spread out across the globe, but you never know.

EDIT: Just a few thoughts about gameplay since we're doing this as a kind of forum collective (damn commies). Since this will clearly be more of a fun for the lulz game night than a SERIUZ BIZNAZ team game night, what do you all think of keeping allspeak on in our L4D2 matches?

EDIT AGAIN: It has just come to my attention that there are apparently two steam groups for this forum. One is Nuklear Power Forums and the other is Nuklear Power Forums unlimited. I think we should default to using the latter because it has more members and a cooler name.

EDIT ANOTHER TIME: Should we move the start time forward or back from 6 to try and reach out to our friends that live in other timezones? Should we try dividing this up specifically into different regions so that pings will be better in our games? Do we even have enough foreigners within any given area to make that a legitimate idea? I was gonna set this up for you but it won't let me on the basis of I don't actually own L4D2 and it'll only let you set up events for games you own so you'll have to wait for another admin to do it or for me to buy L4D2.

I think all the europeans can play together. The difference is 3 hours at most, and that's survivable.

Americans obviously won't have a problem either.

Australians... if lag's not too bad, they could join the Americans. They're +10 hours, pacific is -8. Means they're 18 hours ahead of you, so it's noon on Sunday down under when the yankees start playing.

Mixing Europeans and Americas... Might work. Lag aside, it's a difference of 8-11 hours. If you start playing at 6 PM, it'll be 2-5 AM here. That won't work, but if you if you moved it forward by three or four hours, Britain would have to get up fairly early for a Sunday. Mind you, it's doable... Europe would just have to get up early and America would get to pull an all-nighter. Australia would still be well-off, though (the bastards), if they can handle the ping.

Fifth, if y'wanna have Europeans kill Americans and vice versa, you either need to star another world war, or the game has to be Friday or Saturday evening, American time. Thursday works only for Americans.

EvilNess just made me an NPFU admin or something like that, so I put it up myself. Several people already said the weekend, so I put it on Saturday at 6 PM. Hopefully it'll automatically translate timezones for everybody. We're doin TF2 as well so don't skip out just because you don't have L4D2.

Well, first,like I said, if you moved this back by, say, 2 hours (to 8 PM), it'd be a whole lot easier for us Europeans to participate. I mean, unless you don't want us or something, but... NAAAAH. That'd be silly.

Secondly, how're we gonna manage TF2 and L4D2? Parallel games? One first, then the other?

Thirdly, what's up with maps and game modes? Do we decide those beforehand, or spur-of-the-moment? Does Steam have some sort of voting system?

This isn't going to be a super organized event. Lots of people will log on, find one-another through steam, and start playing. To do anything more organized like putting particular people in particular lobbies for certain games would be a logistical nightmare. Just get online, and if you feel like playing L4D2 or TF2, hop in a lobby with the rest of us. We'll do our best to make room for people, and if games are full, we can start new ones.

Does anyone have any better ideas on how to run it? I'm really open to suggestions.

We define an even 'timeframe', say, 10 hours. From 6 PM to 4 AM, pacific time.

If someone know they're gonna be on within that timeframe, they just post a few details, when they'll be on, what they want to play, with whom, and so on. Just a little: 'I will be on from here to here and would prefer: to play TF2/play L4D2/Play with a certain person/play with people from Europe/have hawt Medic-on-Heavy cybersex/ohgod BAD MENTAL IMAGE/you get the picture..."

We don't need a lot of organization, but if people just do a little, then we can at least coordinate.

Left4Dead 2--Same issue with Versus mode as I've only played it once in my life. I usually only play Campaigns, but I'm willing to join other game modes if you're willing to put up with having me on your team.

Fifth, by fun you must mean "Oh I don't have a medic with me oh I am dead." Admittedly popping out of the ceiling was awesome. That round was dry because we were so evenly matched out in the main courtyard place.


Also everyone should TRY at their convenience to get L4D2. It's got all the features of L4D and more. For all we know they will put it on sale this week for The Sacrifice.

Maybe getting some PC FPSes recently helped me ^_^. But after everyone left the map that has a big room in the middle, someone was mauling me...hard o_o. We were 1-on-1 but I kept dying over and over :P.

I think I like the medic and engineer when I'm in a team, and the heavy kept me alive for a while when I was alone with some unknown people (not NPFers). Also, can't wait to get L4D2, I hope a discount comes next weekend :dance:

L4D is the only (multiplayer) Steam game I own. I've only ever played it like 4 or 5 times with Mauve, so I probably won't be all that good at it. (I'm too used to the Xbox 360 controls.) As far as choosing between L4D and L4D2... It's a tough choice. The sequel has better graphics, more zombies, new weapons (yay melee weapons!) and more in-game lore (MIDNIGHT RIIIIDERS!!!) but the original has awesome characters (granted, the sequel's characters rock too), the ability to sucker-punch zombies endlessly, and a few little extra details that aren't crucial to gameplay but are just fun (You can see your character's feet if you look down at yourself, and bot-controlled characters will automatically respond to you if you use the "thank you" or "hurrah!" voice commands. Not so much so in L4D2.) Both are extremely fun, if a bit gory (especially the sequel, which involves chainsaws. :D ).


But after everyone left the map that has a big room in the middle, someone was mauling me...hard o_o. We were 1-on-1 but I kept dying over and over :P. Oh, were you not able to follow us when we went to a new server? I'm sorry! I could have sworn I saw you when we went to the new one! :( You shoulda said something in the group chat we had going! We would've sent you an invite!

He and another player were standing on a rooftop in Hard Rain, on a level that has absolutely no known instant kill spots. I hit both of them as a charger, carrying one of them (I think it was mauve) off the roof with me, but launching Toast what must have been 20-30 feet through the air and over a fence out of the level. There wasn't a cliff or anything, he just wasn't still in the level so it was counted as an instant death. It was amazing.

On the one hand, I love my current steamname on the basis that when I kill people it's what they see after "you have been killed by" and that is fantastic.

On the other hand when people on my team have to tell me stuff over voice that's the name they have to use and I kind of feel bad for making them say that.

Have you had the new content installed yet? If not, it may be an issue with the game's launch being cancelled by the auto-update but the auto-update not actually running for one reason or another. I've heard of people having problems with that from time to time.

The game says it is up to date. Says it has no DLC, though, under the tab for that. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with updating. That happens before you launch a game, right? At the Steam Library? This is crashing after that, when I load up the game and get through the intro.

Steam actually has a pretty decent tech support crew. Usually takes a day or two for them to respond, but for what few problems I've had so far, they've been pretty helpful. I'd go ask them for advice, if you haven't already.

OKAY, NEW RULE: If you're online, you see other NPFers online, and you want to play with said other NPFers, GET IN THE NPFU GROUP CHAT!! :D Then we can see who's available to play what games. I popped in there a few times on Saturday to see if anyone was around, but it was always empty so I figured everyone was busy.

For the unaware: You can enter the NPFU's chat room by going to the group's steam page and clicking on the "enter chat room" link on the upper right hand side of the page.

Or you can just make a private chat and invite a crapload of people to it, but whatever. The group one just seems easier.

Since we're mostly scattered out, we have a little bit of lag for everyone (around 100-150), but rarely did it reach unacceptable levels. I think Mauve hit like 900 ping for about 10 minutes out of nowhere, but that was more likely a problem on her end than on the server location.

I feel bad that I was apparently the only person who noticed the language filter. And, uh, found that it prohibitively restricted my vocabulary. Maybe I should clean up my act a bit? Nah, it's too fun to curse. Especially in TF2.

To be fair, though, that random dude who kept saying "who needs to know how to make weapons I will tell you how for a weapon" needed to shut the hell up.

Also I found it funny that the NPFers who kept saying "I'll be a noob, I'm terrible, be in awe of my lack of skill etc" consistently got very high scores.

L4D2 was great as well but oh gawd that laughter started to get to me. And hey, I learned that smokers can steal Survivors out from under Jockeys! I learned this when I was trying to steer somebody off the edge of Mercy Hospital.

The guy I was driving survived. The smoker and I didn't.

Just gonna throw this out there, Azisien is a SCARILY good Heavy. I think the only kills I got on him were as a spy...

And Dustbowl was a blast, especially during those first few rounds before the team scramble. Shyria is a great scout, and there's just something about being able to capture the opponent's control points before they even realize it's vulnerable. :D

Then the teams got scrambled and somebody decided to put a sentry down, but oh well.

Mauve I think I may have been the "ninja scout" you were talking about... if only because your crazy accurate rockets kept killing me moments before I'd get a capture. I don't think I was particularly ninja-ish that night, but there WERE times when I thought I capped the final point, but I had actually died a millisecond before victory... thanks to Miss Stupid Rockets Everywhere and Mr I Am An Unstoppable Heavy Weapons Guy (mauve and azisien!!!! :CCCCC).

Truth be told, my tactic as a medic was "hide behind Azisien and uber him when it looks like he's in a jam." As has been previously mentioned, Azisien is a monster as a Heavy.

For those of you who don't have the L4D games, they are sale right now on Steam. You can get either L4D1 or L4D2 for $10, or both for $15.

Not as good as the deal that went on back when the Sacrifice came out, but still, $10 is pretty good for either game.

SPEAKING OF L4D2 ON SALE

This gives me a second chance (now that I actually have some money) to go after my plan to gift some forumites L4D2. I only have 15 dollars I can spend on this now, and a 4 pack currently costs twice that much. What this means is that anyone who already owns L4D2 can meet me halfway and provide 15 dollars in exchange for that warm fuzzy feeling you get inside when you do nice things, or anyone who hasn't bought it yet can do the same and keep one of the four for themselves (or even two if they have a particular friend they'd like to pass it to, thats only fair).

Im not sure how long the sale is, but if anyone is interested in helping me with this, just PM me and we'll try to work out an agreement on payment method and how we'll decide who to pass these out to.
