This newest trailer came out, and it only made me more pumped! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2xTc3w55jw)
For anyone who hasn't heard, it's a new Sonic game coming to the Wii and DS on November 16th. The Wii version is essentially the day-time section of Sonic Unleashed, which was already better on the Wii anyway; the DS version is more like the Sonic Rush games, just without the bottomless pits of the first game or monotonous back tracking of the second.
I've already got it pre-ordered, because that means I get this (http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/07/13/you-want-this-sonic-colors-pre-order-hat/).

I looked at the link and I was like "pssht, only impressive if it's an actual Sonic head-spikes hat"... and then it was.

Peeshaw. A new Sonic game is announced, I get excited, people inevitably find stuff to complain about, I have no way of knowing whether they full of it (as was the case with Sonic Unleashed, both versions) or they're right on the money (like with Sonic and the Black Knight, made even more depressing by how much I liked Secret Rings). Eh, at least Unleashed is the one I payed full price for...

I did the exact same thing when I first read about it.

Though I do admit that looks pretty sweet, I refuse to trust anything other than hands-ons experience.

I'm kind of secretly hoping that this game will be terrible because schadenfreude is the only emotion that Sonic games can instill in me anymore. I mean, if it was good, I just couldn't relate. It'd be like those wacky abstract paintings you see in museums. It just looks like a bunch of random shapes and splashes of color to you, but you hesitate to say anything because you figure if it's in a museum, it must be good, right? A good Sonic game would be equally incomprehensible.

Hey, _mike bought us a new gamepad for our Genesis. It has X, Y, and Z buttons! Isn't that so cool? We can play all our Sonic games together again without worrying about the second controller crapping out! Though, I spent yesterday playing Sonic 1 again, and that doesn't have Tails, so he couldn't play.

No, it just means that the artist replaced talent with bullshit, which the art community is convinced tastes like candy. I've seen too many black canvases in art museums with some faux-deep explanation to be fooled by that kind of thing.
On topic, Sonic Colors doesn't look too bad, but I am not nor have I ever been invested in the games, having grown up largely without them. It's just nice for other people if it's good.

~What does up must come down / and yet my feet don't touch the ground / see the world spinning upside-down / a mighty crash without a sound!~
~I can feel your every rage / step aside I'll turn the page / breakin' through your crazy maze / like a laser beam, my eye's on you!~
~Watch me roll the night away / watch me save the day / feels like a storm is gettin' close / headed your way!~

I'm not quite sure whether that reaction is a good one or not. :sweatdrop

It's a Barrelpants reaction. That's all you need to know.
So. I haven't played a Sonic game in ages, but Seil's graphic makes me wonder where the idea of Sonic having "friends" went wrong to the point where it's a deal breaker? One thing that I can see is that you probably shouldn't have ten character who can run just as fast as Sonic can if you want him to stay some kind of super-hedgehog, but I doubt that's the objection there.
Too lazy to start a thread for it, but I just played the trial version of Sonic 4. Very good. Visually it's great, with lots of little details. The homing attack is a nice addition. Sonic's running and spinball sprites(?) seem better than what I saw in the original trailer. Music of the first stage is decent. There are multiple pathways through the level. Only complaint right now is the price and that I didn't see any Chaos Emerald zones. Of course, that I didn't see the latter doesn't mean they aren't there.

It's more like he has 53987 of them and they add at least one every new game. There are so many that none of them matter because they never get decently characterized and some are outright aborted, like Silver, who had some great potential to be awesome and new and then got his awesome newness taken away so he could run fast like everyone else the very next game. Then some are just plain annoying.
Edit: It would be like if all the Robot Masters from every Mega Man game got permanently added to the cast.

I'm enjoying Sonic 4, and yes the Chaos Emerald zones are there. You get to them by having fifty rings at the end of a level. They're kind of like the ones in Sonic 1 except you rotate the level instead of moving Sonic and collect rings to get past barriers.
Edit: Not sure if fifty rings is required, but I'm guessing as much.
I can see is that you probably shouldn't have ten character who can run just as fast as Sonic can
As far as I can recall, no one has ever run as fast as Sonic. Even in Sonic&Knuckles, he was significantly faster than everyone else to the point that the 2 player stages were actually hard to do with him because of his speed. He's also usually more mobile with powers geared for that. Sonic 3 gave him that flash attack/shield thing which evolved into the homing jump later.
Edit: I kinda miss the natural progression between levels that Sonic 3/Sonic&Knuckles had. Made it more immersive.

Well the game is out, the reviews are in and Sonic Colors for both Wii and DS are pretty damn good.
The Wii version
Is nearly all Side scroller with a few 3D sections that are mostly just short straight a ways.
The level design is wonderful and the game warns you with a caution sign flashing on the lower part of the screen when you're approaching a pit or spike trap. And the stages a gorgeous.
The controls are pretty good, drifting is wonderful and easy to control, Wisps power ups are fun and easy to use.
Don't know much about the boss battles but they seemed to be handled pretty well.
Story is very lighthearted and funny at times. The cut scenes also seem to be few a stretched apart. The second you click new game you're instantly thrown into the first stage. Giving it that classic 90s feel.
Sonic Simulator is fun.
As for the DS version.
Sonic has been slowed down a bit and the trick system was removed and replaced with all of his gameplay abilities from the Wii version.
The stages are longer then Rush's and Rush Adventure's, and are more aimed towards platforming over running.
Music is the same as the Wii version, note per note. Same quality too (kinda hard to tell for me).
Doesn't have as many different things as the Wii version (lacks Sonic Simulator for starters) but still very enjoyable non the less.
The warnings from the Wii version are present here. So it warns you whenever you're approaching a pit or spike trap. And the stages are pretty.
Over all Sonic Colors is a pretty great game worth buying if you're a Sonic Fan. If not, then rent it. Trust me it's worth it.
9.7/10

So, apparently, the games are good?
Is that why I've heard barely anything about them, because Sonic Cycle's status quo is god?
