View Full Version : I'm thinking about doing an LP, stop me before I hurt myself.

I'd like to try my hand at LP, and my first idea is to do the Heir to the Throne campaign of Battle for Wesnoth just to see what doing an LP is like.
Any advice/"you're-stupid"/support for this?
If you're going to do a video LP, I'd recommend having a couple other people with you when you record. It really, really helps.
If you are doing a picture LP, try and figure out the direction you are going to go with that before starting and maybe think out a couple things in advance. This is something I ought to have done in my own picture LP stuff, but never did.

I'm gonna be doing picture LP as the "print screen" button is easier to find than a working open-source screen capture program. I probably can't do as many pictures as Token does since even at minimal resolution the game will still be 4 times larger.
I'll essentially be able to figure out pacing on my own, and what to write shouldn't be too hard.

Edit your images before dropping them in a post -- don't just printscrn and assume it's done. I mean, you don't have to do a lot or anything, but pick a good size resolution to resize them for in the thread and, if the game uses sprites or is older, etc., you can touch it up for better clarity and all that.
Do a few "updates" in a row to see if you have the patience for it.

Decide how you're going to write your obligatory sidekick character. It need not exactly follow the mood of the game. I had fun with Kieran by making him more thiefy than heroic when I did Lands of Lore.
Doing it should be fun for you, too. If it's not fun, it'll show and not be as good. Even if your fun is venting about how much the game sucks.
Also, decide how much viewer input matters. In some cases, it matters a lot, but where I ran into trouble was when the game suddenly got linear. I may have been better off switching format for a while or doing a hybrid, but several other factors at the time led to me just dropping it. I still regret doing so sometimes.
Really, though, you can do a great LP without viewer input. Presentation is the main entertainment of these.
Oh! I've got one. Don't be afraid to photoshop. Don't be afraid to change names, images, etc if it'll improve the LP. This is assuming you can shop stuff decently. When done right it can really improve an LP I think.

Or use cheat codes/the console.
I still think one of the best parts of my FO:3 LP was the capture by super mutants, which would simply not have been possible without using the console.

I know the markup language for that game, even writing my own campaign (which is NOT gonna be the LP). Hell, I could splice in images and like show a line of dialogue and be like "fuck no" and show the file being opened and modified and showing the modified dialogue. I should probably do that now that I think about it.
And I've done enough stuff with MSPA's image manip thread to be competent at GIMP. I've got the technical crap in the bag.
I'll probably take a crack at doing scenario one. I'm just trying to figure if I should do easy, normal or hard difficulty. I've done that campaign twice on easy, so it wouldn't feel new for me, normal might not lose that feeling but hard might force me to cross the line and use debug mode.
But I'll leave it as my first viewer choice. What difficulty should I use?

Why with a little care and some blatant lies, you can convince people who have finished the game that something is actually in there.

Given how Token's vote is deserved retaliation for me telling him to get mental damage from the Topaz LP, I'll just start a new thread a request a poll when I start this up.
I might start something within a week or two. But first I need to get my add-on campaign out of the way so I can actually think about the LP when I think about the game.
Hell, I got time this week. Just have to splice in some animation coding and input coordinates, run it once to make sure it works and then put it on the server.
So yeah, no more votes until I actually make this a poll. Though I do guarantee that this will start within November if I actually do it.

I don't think anyone wants to see that.
I think everyone wants to see that.
