Now awhile ago I posted about how my original model finally RRoD on me. So I need a new one. My main concern is all my saved data. I was in the middle of Dead Rising and Star Ocean, didn't finish my Fallout DLC, and want my Mass Effect data in anticipation for 3. So can anyone think of a way to transfer the saved data onto the new system?

Option A) Get Memory Card/Formatted external hard drive and transfer all the files over between the two machines via USB.
Option B) Get a Data Migration Kit.

Then my friend the best thing to do is to find someone with a not smoking dead 360 and ask them if you can use there machine to preform the data transfer (which could take a good long while depending on the amount of data on it). That or find some way to link the HDD to your computer and do it that way.

The Migration Kit doesn't require the old system to be on, you just hook the old HD directly to the new system using the Transfer Cable.
That's what I did

Can't you just, like, plug your old hard drive into the new xbox?
I honestly don't get why data needs to be transferred at all, you can literally just use the exact same hard drive. When my xbox rrod'd, I took out the hard drive and the disc inside, sent off the xbox, and put everything back in the new one. It was like nothing had happened.

Like others said, you can just pop off the hard drive and plug it into the new system. That is, unless you're getting a Slim, in which case I also recommend the data migration cable. Just plug it in and it does all the work for you.
The only thing is that you'll have to re-download the licenses for any DLC or XBLA games you bought, but that's just a matter of re-downloading things off of your Purchase History list (or whatever its called). If you don't download the licenses then you'll only be able to access the full content while signed in to XBL, and you'll only get trial versions when offline.

This. I have friends who bring over their HDDs to play stuff they have saved on their account(s) (e.g. Rock Band and all their downloaded songs).
If you now have two HDDs, then yeah just transfer that stuff, especially if the new one is larger. You can also go through a process that will recognize the new machine and hard drive as yours and transfer your ownership of all your crap (like things you've already purchased to download, etc.) and let you re-download data without additional charge. I know MS has videos and guides for this. As for your save data you'd need to do as suggested and get it transferred.

Buy one of these (http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Xbox-360-Data-Migration-Cable/product/4A629AA4?one=blank&WT.mc_id=pointitsem_googpdtext&WT.srch=1&two=blank&three=blank&mr:trackingCode=C2078E9E-DB82-DF11-BC8B-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA), they work on any HDD. There is no setup involved. Just plug it into your old HDD and your new xbox.

posted this because I wasn't sure if I could. I have the original model and since I owned one since about launch never kept up to date on the new models. I didn't know if they were compatible

Old hard drives can't plug into slim models, but with the data migration kit it doesn't matter. Worth noting that the migration kits can't transfer under every scenario. They can't do slim-to-slim, but that's not the issue here.

do they sell non-slim models? cause all I've been seeing are the kinect ones and no clue which they are

You might find some surplus ones somewhere but I don't think they directly sell them anymore. Kinect bundle is a good deal if you even want a Kinect, but if not, shouldn't be too hard to just find a 250GB slim model on its own.

so kinect one is a slim?

The slim is black and has a more angular shape.
Also, my brother was looking into buying a 360 for Fable 3. We went to the store and found, I shit you not, the only model they carried was a 4GB. Like holy shit, I don't know why they'd even MAKE something that ridiculously small. But it was right there on the box. We were both flabbergasted. We own flash drives TWICE that size and there are flash drives much larger than even that on the market.
So yeah, just hope your area isn't such a hole that they think you deserve only 4GB units.
Also, Microsoft, those kind souls, were thoughtful enough to just so happen to have built in a mysterious port, and took pity on the poor souls who bought the $199.99 units by creating a 250GB hard drive for it. For $129.99, nearly the entire cost of the console, making it $30 more expensive than just shelling out for one that has 250GB of drive built in.

The small slim is the same as Microsoft has been doing for years with the Arcade model, which had no hard drive. The 4GB isn't an actual hard drive, it IS some flash memory in the xbox itself. From there, you can pop on a hard drive. This can actually be an attractive alternative because it is $100 cheaper, and then you can buy a couple gigabytes of memory card and pop it in instead of having a hard drive at all.
Unless you're direct downloading your games, which you should not because the prices are ALL higher online versus retail stores, you don't need more then 60GB of space.

Anyone have any good co-op games they'd like to recommend? (No Live or anything since I'll be sitting right next to Player 2.)

Yes. Any new model being made from this point forward will be a slim.

I swear that was the only post I didn't see. It still works though. Worked for me at least.
