View Full Version : The Return of NPF Steam Night
Toastburner B

It's been awhile since we had an official NPF Steam Night. There have been a few times where we managed to get an impromptu one going, but a lot of time it ends in one or two of us sitting in the group chat waiting in vain for enough people to come in to get a game going...such as this past weekend when me and lazy were hoping to start a game.
So I ask thee, denizens of the NPF: who is up for a game of something this weekend?
Traditionally, these things have been L4D and TF2 centered. I'm more of a L4D guy, myself, but I'm willing to get publicly humiliated playing TF2.

I should get my new PC tomorrow, if everything works out Ok, i'll have (probably) TF2 running by the Weekend, i've never played this game before in my life, so everyone is welcome to come shoot me in the face.

Been playing a lot more l4d lately myself after an entire month of nothing but Guild Wars. I'd be happy to join in!
...I do have TF2 though, so I can come along and be shot in the face for that as well, I s'pose. Do prefer l4d. Zombies!
I got both TF2 and L4D2 plus lots of free time. Just some problems:
1)I suck at both
2)My connection is quite slow, so there's probably gonna be some lag(I guess that doesn't matter when you're playing on easy or in a game where both teams are made of newbs)
3)I'm not very good at understanding spoken english and since voiced communication is kinda essencial to planning...
I'm still up for screwing everything up, though!:D

And there's little planning that goes on in L4D anyway. :P

No worries, we usually have a few people with lag. One more won't make much of a difference.
3)I'm not very good at understanding spoken english and since voiced communication is kinda essencial to planning...
Planning doesn't really factor heavily into how we play.
And by "doesn't really factor", I mean, "We don't plan, we just kinda run."
So there seems to be interest...what time can everyone be on on Saturday/Sunday?
Geminex

My fan type thing is making lots of noise and the internet tells me this means that the other fan type thing may be broken, so my computer is noisy and potentially becoming very hot.
But screw that noise, Pyros will definitely play L4D2 until his computer catches fire!

1) We aren't exactly pros. No worries. (Although half the people who say they suck usually end up destroying the opposite teams and getting the most points)
2) I regularly have 300+ ping in certain L4D matches. It doesn't affect any of the other players, so it's usually fine.
3) Only a handful of us use mics, and most of the time we just use them to crack jokes and complain about getting killed at inopportune moments, rather than using them to actually PLAN anything. We don't usually make battle plans-- our strategy is "run around like morons and hope we don't die." So it shouldn't be a big problem.

i suck a bit less as demoman but i still suckDemos hard to start up but once you hit 5 hours on him he starts opening up
i'm a sad sad excuse for an enginneer there is two things about engie you need to be good with him. Map Knowledge which you don't have, and a Good team which is hard to find at times.
i backstabbed a guy as a Spy and then proceeded to die a lotso your good with spy. (seriously Spy is considered a "Master" class and is REALLY hard to play without experience even the best spys rarely have a 1 to 1 kill/death ratio)
i unlocked 2 anchievements in a row as a doctorMedic is a good starter class and is (in my opinion) the Most Important Class in the game. You learn things from other people playing and learn to dodge (scout skill) read the battle (heavy skill) aim with needles (demo skill) and use your melee (good pyro skills) while also managing with multitasking (engie skill) and learn to cut your losses and retreat (spy skill)
stick with the good doctor for now.

Also that spy battle was great until some jerkass (me) went Pyro. It would've been so much better if everyone was just disguising, running around, shooting, Dead Ringing, and so on, with nobody knowing for sure whose team anybody was on.

Well the recording was kind of impromptu after I mentioned it maybe once. The music covered over voices, but I didn't actually record all that much voice chat in all the raw footage anyways. And if I did, often it was with me staring at a wall or something. I'm just a video editting noob, I do what I can.

What software do you use to record and edit these? I have a huge harddrive and a four-core processor, so running L4D2 and recording software at the same time should be easy.

Fraps to record, Audacity (audio) and WMM (video) to edit.
As one can see, my system is swell for recording. I would just have to clear out some of the garbage on my storage drive. Too much animus.
I don't know how everybody else feels about recording things constantly during Steam Night. Might allow for Charger Olympics, at the very least.

constant recording I personally wouldn't much like that.

Precisely my thinking on the matter! Unless it's obvious and planned beforehand, I wouldn't make a habit of it.

On Spy Rush:
If my team had started going spy, I would have joined. I thought it was just an attacking team thing though, so I stuck with Heavy and mowed you guys down. You guys did make me hella paranoid though, so I started just shooting everywhere, hoping to hit a cloaked spy.
It actually got about three spies, I think.
Also, that round led to me getting 4 kills in one life as Heavy. I don't think I'll ever get that again :P
That said, that was maybe my third time playing TF2. Fun time!
Edit:
I'd love for more people to play Killing Floor with, since synk asked for games that aren't L4D and TF2.
And since Kerensky had a mistaken impression of the game (Left 4 Dead for the Counterstrike crowd), I might as well do some promoting.
Killing Floor is a multiplayer co-op zombie survival game, like Left 4 Dead. It was originally an Unreal Tournament 2K4 mod that was bought by Tripwire Interactive and turned into a full-fledged game for download.
It has basic similarities, but fundamental differences to Left 4 Dead. Killing Floor is much more open-ended in playstyle. You are given a map, and you must survive a set number of waves on the map (similar to that one mode in Left 4 Dead, but different in that it's not about lasting an amount of time, but objectively surviving a set number of enemies). You earn money for killing specimens, which you use to buy ammo and guns from the Trader, who moves around the map and opens her shop between waves.
There's a HUGE list of weapons you can buy. However, it helps to narrow your list by which weapons benefit your perk the most. Perks are sorta like classes, but less rigid. They give you some advantages to certain weapons or playstyles, making them do more damage, increasing the magazine size, reducing reload time, and making them more affordable, among other things. However, and this is one thing I really like, selecting a perk never precludes you from anything. This is important, because when you run out of ammo for the guns you are good with, you'll use ANYTHING to survive. In this game, with the perk system, that actually means something, and the decision to use a gun you don't have an advantage with is a meaningful one.
You can still get by with the guns that you're not good with, also. It's just less optimal.
The teamwork in that game is a lot less forced, but a lot more fluid. Like Left 4 Dead, healing is more effective when done on someone else. In this game, healing is a renewable resource, but it needs time. You have a medical syringe that runs on recharging power, somehow, and it takes half as much juice to stick someone else with it as it does to do yourself. By the nature of the enemies of this game, a cohesive team will always be watching each other's backs. It doesn't give you the easy indicators like Left 4 Dead, so it encourages more team cohesion in the first place, since you have to know yourself when your friends are in trouble.
One thing I also absolutely adore about Killing Floor is the ability to weld doors shut. You can actually effectively hole up somewhere, and it really feels like you are holing up, because you're actually welding the doors shut to lock out the enemies. That's something that's missing from Left 4 Dead, where the only places you can feel like that are the preset places that the designers built in to the level. You don't have the same sense of ownership.
Killing Floor is a 6 player game, all survivors.

I got Killing Floor, but I haven't played it yet, also a couple other games that have online multiplayer. I think we all should all each other as friends (at least those who are regulars at Steam, or at least the NPF weekends), that way Steam will tell us which friends have the same games as us, and it'll be easier to set up a game or something.

I'm kind of regretting not getting Killing Floor when it was on sale for super cheap a while back :S
Oh well. I might cave eventually but I dunno. I have a bit of a backlog right now anyway.

I've got Killing Floor, although I've only played it among my friends here at college. Gotten up to level 4 Demolitions and Sharpshooter, and almost level 4 Firebug. Although my friends and I start up a Skype call to communicate a lot more easily, so that's one reason why it's seemed simple for me.
But more people to play with would be nice, so I'm up for any games when possible.

How much does Killing Floor cost? The idea is intriguing (now that I actually understand it properly)... and to be quite honest I'd love for there to be an option for NPF nights other than tf2 and l4d.

On a related note: Are there any of us who play Borderlands on the PC and would be interested in busting that out?

Killing Floor is a bit stale but it would work for NPF, and looks like we have six people. KF is twenty bucks, but I would wait for a sale. Not worth it at that price.
I do have Borderlands too, though the four player limit makes it kind of small (since we have been averaging eight to nine players).

Got a level 69 Berserker and a level 7 Hunter right here. And I'm game on starting a new character whenever if that's alright too.
...yeah, I like the game a lot. It's Diablo with guns, I can't help it!
Okay, so if I remember my account info correctly, my name is 'poetischerliebhaber.' I just got TF2 up and running on my laptop, and waiting for my copy of L4D1 to arrive.

I think I tried to add you like months ago and you're still on my pending list.
You should get a refund and get L4D2 instead, with Sacrifice DLC out, it's universally better.

Your steam login is not the same name people use to add you to their friend list. For that, they enter the Alias you set up that is seen by other players in games (and can be changed at any time, even mid-game) or your email address.

So I guess it's obviously not happening this weekend, but I still want to get some discussion going about adding games to the roster.
So right now it's looking like the top 3 contenders are Borderlands, Killing Floor and Titan Quest. I'm probably gonna end up getting one of them shortly/eventually, but I'd feel better knowing that whatever I buy is going to end up frequently playable. Like, if not for NPF nights, my L4D would be collecting dust and I wouldn't even own L4D2.
So if you could pick one of those 3 (correct me if I'm wrong by adding more of course) games to "add to the roster", what would it be?
Right now Borderlands is looking spiffy to me, but I don't know enough about any of the options to say for sure.

I've had Borderlands for a while now. The only thing that keeps me from playing it anymore is the fact I don't know anyone with the computer version. All my friends bought the 360/PS3 versions and gave me the finger, and I'm too cool for public games.
I'd be down for weekend runs of it any time I'm not out on the town.

For those who are contemplating Titan Quest, THQ is having a sale on their store and Titan Quest Gold is only $5.
Here's the link for Titan Quest. (http://store.thq.com/store/thq/en_US/pd/Titan-Quest-Gold-Edition/productID.150121400)
And here's the link to the entire sale. (http://store.thq.com/store/thq/en_US/list&parentCategoryID=&categoryID=54746400&resultsPerPage=35)
I'm on the verge of caving in and buying this. It is extremely tempting...

Yeah, i've heard its real buggy, but it gets patched a lot, so who knows?
Anyway, I'm thinking about picking up one or both of the L4D, which gets more play? (I got a BIG bonus at work this week :D)

You know, I have Titan Quest.
I forgot about that. I think I bought it when I splurged on the Holiday Steam Sale a year or so ago.
...And I apparently played it for 11 minutes, according to Steam.
EDIT:
If we're just looking for games to play that everyone has/can get...
Alien Swarm?
It's free, yo.

There isn't really a reason to get L4D1 anymore. They even ported some of the original campaigns into the sequel, so you don't miss out on much at all. And yeah like Arcanum said, L4D2 is the norm on npf nights, so you may as well cave in to peer pressure.
WRT Borderlands, are the DLC packs worth it? Like, Borderlands is 20 bucks on Steam, Borderlands Gold (with all the DLC) is 30 bucks. Is it worth shelling out the extra 10 for 4 mission packs and early access to the Duke Nukem Forever demo?
lazy man

Well, looking at the price of all the DLC they're all still 10 bucks by themselves. Knoxx alone is worth the 10 bucks, so at that price you may as well just get the Gold version and all the extra goodies that'll come with it.
Azisien
