First rule of Sony... (http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/02/sony-lawsuit-factory/)

Never talk about Sony.

Second rule of Sony

Never talk about Sony!

So if you talk about something certainly that came from Sony, you're liable to have Google look up your IP address and give it to them. So not only has Sony installed a new rootkit firmware that allows them remote access to their servers, they want to overreach and destroy the 4th Amendment and charge these people with statutory damages because they hacked the PS3 to put on Other OS.

Seriously Sony... I want some of what you're smoking.

Money. They're smoking money. Money that buys very expensive lawyers. Its the only way they get away with this shit.

To be fair Sony Spent and Lost a lot of money to make the Ps3 "unhackable." Some of the price tag goes to the anti-hack dedicated processor, money and power that could have been cut to make a much cheaper model or a much stronger system. All for the sake of protecting their market. However, It still doesn't give them the right to do this BS (considering that the ORIGINAL PS3 could be repartitioned and made to do the same thing!)

None of which worked because it was cracked wide open in a few days, and just goes to demonstrate the problem I have with Sony as a business, and the problem I have with DRM technology in general.

you cant make something unhackable even if its a built in firmware you will see tons of mod chips to bypass it and thats assuming no one figures out a software solution that works. And if its possible someone will.

But here is a better idea, make a better system so we wont have to pull this crap. Stop limiting what we can do, its only hurting your sales

And which didn't happen until they removed the ability to put linux on it. And cracking the whole thing has now made it easier for pirates.

Can you imagine fucking with the kind of people who want to put linux on their PS3?

Because I cannot.

wait, it just hit me, this is only good for sony to act like dicks. Its not illegal to hack something you own.

We are all on watch lists by Sony for saying the words "hack" and "ps3" together in a thread, looking at the thread, and knowing of the existance of the thread.

Now see, I'm about to start a job that would pay me enough to keep up with a console gaming habit. And I was planning on getting a PS3, not even jail breaking it or anything. But with this kinda crap I don't even know if I want it anymore.

Is this Sony's plan? Are they trying to stop the fact that when a PS3 was sold it was sold at a loss? By getting people to NOT want to buy from them? I'm just confused how this does anything good for them, but I'm not "in the know" on this gen of consoles anymore.

^This^

Seriously, I even got a PS3 controller to use with my previous phone (a N900) and that I could use with my laptop (it needs a program though). Having something other than my Wii and laptop for playing games at home would be nice, and now that I got a 1080p TV, the PS3 (with all it's technological stuff) looked very nice. Maybe I should just save for that 3DS :/

Fair warning, Nintendo damn near said it's uncrackable... (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107307-Nintendo-Heyday-of-Piracy-Is-Over)

I'm giving it two weeks.

Other problems with the 3DS is regionalization and kids wanting to run Linux on it...

Oh wait...

I don't get it - I mean, I like Sony as much as the next guy but their business prac-

I am a loyal Sony customer. I have bought many fine items from the company and have had no major problems with any of them. I, consumer, pledge to continue buying from them because they're so great. All is well.

I haven't had any problems with not being able to hack/mod my DS lite. Yeah, I got one of those trendy card thingies but, I wouldn't miss it if I weren't able to use it. Doing stuff that I would not do in my games like messing with cheats, looking at removed/event only content from a game and other shenanigans, and getting some free games (Tyrian in my laptop, Wii, phone and DS FTW!). I haven't imported any games either (I got this one game at a retail store, which came in a weird transparent DS box once, it was from Europe) so, it's ok if the 3DS won't be hackable for a while/at all, at least, in my case.

OTOH, my Vivaz Pro isn't hackable ATM. Stupid Sony Ericsson and their anti-hacking stuff, I miss things like fixing some stupid bug that appears in the media gallery when you have hidden folders with images, changing my phone's font, deleting useless crap, removing the stupid operator logo that makes my phone take longer to turn on/off. Yeah, it's not a Nokia (Nokia's S60 phones can be hacked to your heart's content in most cases) but at least I want some community bug fixes like people did on the Satio :C. I'm getting an Android phone as soon as something that fits my needs comes out :/. (i.e. nice Hi res screen, keys, TV out, a not crappy camera for pics and video and overall good specs, I don't want to end with an underpowered overpriced phone *coughN97cough*)

Whenever someone says something like that, I have to laugh. Even implying that sort of thing is just a challenge, like telling a six-year-old that they can't get huge air sans limb-shattering (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIeFCi_8tos) or that no, they can't watch The Ring.

These are the guys that that don't use QUI's because they think it takes the challenge out of it. These are the guys that make professional programmers weep. These guys make nerds seem like jocks. These are the equivalent of a Walking Nuke in the programing world.
Don't!

I don't know. Really this all aimed at jailbreak nothing more. So long as you not supporting jail brake then they'll leave you be.

Could you blame them though. the PS3 was basically destroyed beyond repair. They might have to bail out of the console fight this gen and focus on PS4 being harder to crack if things get worse.

They have every right to be pissed that they are pretty much going to bleed money from now on unless they cut the PS3 and there losses from it short.

Hell this whole incident might push PS4 out the door sooner then planned.

focus on PS4 being harder to crack if things get worse.

This is not the right direction at all, and they will drive themselves and their reputation in to the ground if they continue down this path.

edit: I mean, I can't stress enough how much of a terrible move this would be for them to make.

It ranks right up there with that ass-headed wild hair they had for a moment about maybe making PS3 games encode to the console so they can't be rented or bought used.

But Sony takes too much pride in there products. They're going to likely continue to try and stop hacking on their consoles.

It wouldn't surprise me if an early launch for PS4 (as in a year before the others) was partially due to them wanting to replace the then broken PS3 ASAP.

Which again goes back to my not liking how Sony conducts business.

I don't actually see Microsoft or Nintendo moving to a new gen anytime soon, one having just launched a brand new console edition and major interactive device*. For the PS4 to launch 'early', it might actually be jumping the gun a great deal too much then it can handle.

It is important to remember that releasing early not only gets you a step ahead of the game, but it lets your competition learn from your mistakes for their launches instead of making them.

*I would actually like to see this become a trend, with the old method of "new console every couple of years" replaced with "Console software upgrades often, and console hardware upgrades as technology advances". A lot was learned from the early editions of the Xbox 360, which was improved upon in the later manufacturing runs, and more was learned from them and used to improve the new incarnation of the 360.

I'm kind expecting Sony to eventually take this route even farther in a attempt to "repair" the PS3.

This whole thread makes me almost want to go back and see if I can't jailbreak their old fucking betamax players and send one to them just for lulz.

I've said it before. I'll say it again. Fuck Sony. Their practices regarding hacking, DRM, system invasion, and particularly their throwing wads of cash at courts and legislators to oppress their customers have been nothing less than deplorable. It's a damn pity someone hasn't found a way to drain their accounts dry yet.

You can modify the hardware, sure, but modifying the firmware will get you in trouble and that is what gets people arrested because it's agains the DMCA. It's bullshit, but hey we knew that.
