D&D 3.5 Thread [Nikose] [Three-for-one]

It's another Nikose Day and it's time to beginning the PLANNING segment of his games. Last time I kind of got re-arranged and jumbled into running one, and didn't have time to prepare things the way I would have liked to.

I'm fixing that this time around by preparing my games and list in this thread. There are TWO different games to sign up for. I'm detailing each one. They are in my living campaign world- lots of things have happened in this world, that deviate it HEAVILY from the standard setting. A lot of the notes/time line I'll be posting will reference this, and will hopefully allow anyone with a knowledge of the forgotten realms to have a fair update on the changes.

This also means that out of character knowledge isn't going to be NEARLY as useful here; And I discourage it's heavy use anyway. Be aware that I have no qualms killing you with whatever monsters I have planned. Each of these campaigns are written to [hopefully!] lead you in a direction I choose.

One of these campaigns may be occurring in a side time line. You don't know which one that is.

With the exception of Red Mage Black, I'm going to ask that anyone signing up, signs up for no more then 1 game a peice. There may be game overlay and interactions.

Draconic themes are encouraged.

1) All races excluding those native to Eberron [Changelings, Warforged, Shifters, Kalashtar] are available. Some Unapproachable East races are also unavailable. If you're curious, ask before each race.
2) All classes are currently allowed, excepting Factotum. Do not bring that into my house.
3) No Homebrew.
4) If your character smells of the gladiator reek of Minmaximus, warrior skald of the kingdom of hax, expect to be visited with the worst luck Beshaba can bestow.
5) There are no bad ideas.
6) Except the ones that kill you.
7) If you have a particular request of me, think slowly, carefully, and WISELY about what you want. You will only be allowed to make one request that exceeds these limits; I can and likely will still refuse it. You've been warned.

A man's family is murdered for his crime of drawing breath. He seeks to reinvent himself and his people in a way to force others to accept them as living, breathing individuals. They are not diseased; they are not flawed; they are not imperfect. They exist as they are by divine right, and work hard to earn their place.

Talks of necromantic activity in Calimshan are happening, out in the grand desert. There is a great fear of salt mummies, and there are rumors of strange skeletons immune to the firey magics of their heritage.

TIMELINE
1366 DR:
[Gareth finishes his epic spell, and creates a new race of men, Homo Sapien Tyrian; KingMen. Nikose is the first. The race
breeds true through normal human stock. Gareth forsakes his magic and invests his soul into powering Nikose.]
[In an alternate universe, a timeline of mishaps releases a portion of Shar's mind and gives over a plan for her to bring about in the present. Motions are made towards these plans. The timeline collapse is caused by Nikose's death in 1383 DR]
[The Fallen Knight Itzal is struck with a soul splitting power, forcing him into two pieces; one lawful evil, the other chaotic
good. His Chaotic Good half is sequestered, while his Lawful evil half dedicates his life to the service of Mephistopheles.]
1368 DR:
[The Dark Itzal dies, but Mephistopheles calls on an age old favor, and has his soul scoured to become a hellbred, sending
him back to the material plane as his servant.]
[The Sequestering ends, and the Chaotic Good Itzal is set free, calling himself Black, and serving himself.]
1370 DR:
[The Chaotic Good Itzal attempts to rob Nikose; Nikose offers him an apprenticeship, which he accepts; Itzal introduces
himself as Black, and uses this name from this point on.]
1374 DR:
[The events of Cormyr and Shadowdale occur.]
[Because of the actions of Veit, Draar, Kirin and Solax, Shar is weakened; Mask does not surrender himself to his mother,
and she does not gain his essence and portfolios. Mask and Shar remain seperate beings and Mask breaks his alliance with

[The rebellion was supposed to occur in 1375; by performing it in 1374, you maintained Mask's existence.]

My preference is against over-leveling Arianna (level 15 feels a bit too much for her, I'd prefer my first real D&D experience not be quite that advanced, and besides, she's not one to keep bundled up in dreary cold) so I'd probably say scenario 3 is best for her? I hesitate to honestly say that any kind of jump out to me as scenarios that "fit her" (based on your brief descriptions, at least) but assuming I received a bit of guidance in May I could probably level Arianna up to 10 and have her sweat it out in the deserts or somethin'.

Note however that my actual preference for scenario depends far less on the plot and far more on the players / characters she'd be stuck adventuring with. I'd favor a narrative-heavy approach, and I'd probably prefer adventuring with folks who didn't mind reading and responding to occasional Walls Of Text.

...But all of this is kind of moot for another month or so, ain't it?

Well there is a metamagic to let you burn things immune to fire, although I don't think you have Sandstorm.

Hmm if I have a crossbow permaenchanted with the psionic power Bolt can I just assume having an endless quantity of +1 ecto-bolts or is it the kind of thing where I get to sit in a corner and repeatedly manifest it to get a full quiver?

Generally speaking, a weapon isn't exactly 'permaenchanted' with a spell. Rather, weapons have special abilities which do various things such as adding fire damage to all of your attacks or increasing the damage you do against a specific race. What you are asking for seems reasonable enough to homebrew, even if it doesn't already exist.

Although, bolts aren't exactly expensive. As such, I'd be more inclined to just get a +1 weapon and put special abilties not related to ammo production on the weapon when I have the gold.

A dorje of Bolt would cost 750 gp and would let you manifest it 50 times, if that helps.

Do you think not having to worry about ammo is worth that much? Since your weapon would need to be +1 anyway, you would gain almost nothing from having a crossbow that autocasted Bolt. I suppose there are situations where infinite ammo would be welcome, and not having to keep an eye on your ammo count is nice, I just don't think its 4000gp nice.

Yeah, 4000 gp would get you 40,000 crossbow bolts or ~600 masterwork crossbow bolts.

Again, note that your weapon would need to have a +1 or higher enhancement bonus to put an ability on it. That +1 you were refering to on the bolts? That is an enchancement bonus, and bonuses of the same type do not stack. As such, it wouldn't really matter whether those were ectoplasmic bolts or wooden ones. Also, unless I've missed something, the masterwork bonus is also an enhancement bonus, so you would gain nothing over using normal bolts.

See I didn't know the stack thing. Makes the entirety of buying anything other than an improved weapon seem absolutely pointless. At any rate that reduces certain things.

Just make sure that you have a backup weapon. We wouldn't want you to feel useless because the enemy had a bunch of DR/Bludgeoning or Slashing. Also, sometimes the material of your bolts would matter for overcoming DR, but I can't recall how commen that type of DR is at level 5.

No there isn't anything that says that psicrystals are outside of the rules of gaining feats with hitdice, but apparently there is debate over whether they actually get them for some reason. I figured that it'd be best to ask instead of assume wrong.

Psicrystal is essentially the psionic equivilant of a familar, but instead of an animal, it is a physical manifestation of part of a character's personailty.

If you don't want psionics I don't mind going with another class. Any issues with, say, Binder from Tome of Magic or Dragonfire Adept from Dragon Magic?

The argument is whetherpsicrystals actually gain HD or have HD set by their master the first allowing feats, the second not allowing feats.
Their is reasonable argument either side and while the rules as written are totally ambigious not allowing them feats makes them ridiculously underpowered (though I'm in the camp of they don't gain hitpoints by raw intrepretation) so it best to let them have feats. It is much more balanced that way.
Edit: though this is from my experience. People in the psionics are broken camp will claim the opposite.
If you want to parallel the wizard then don't give them feats because familiars don't gain feats (they would if they gained hit dice).
Really this whole thing is symptomatic of psionics as a whole- the rules aren't coherent and were just kind of last minute tacked togehther.

Constructs that are 'mindless' do not gain feats or skill points. Constructs that are not, gain feats and skill points.

Psicrystals aren't really... either. They're extensions of your own mind, a shard of your psych.

So I would say they would have all the same skills and feats that you have, lacking access to those feats they don't meet the pre-requisites for.

That is a reasonable ruling, and I expected the answer would be a flat 'no', so its better than I expected. Although, now I'm thinking of looking back on my feats and seeing if I can get pp on the crystal, since it can't make use of most of the feats I intend to take. I likely wont change them from where they are now, but it might be a decent thought experiment.

In regards to availability: Weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun) dates in the summer will not work for me. Might work again in the fall, if for some reason you wanted to switch up the time in September. I can start anytime after May 16th.

Might have enough spare time during a random break to level Arianna up to 10 sometime soon, but I'm not making any promises.

Sorry, guys, for my (second, near-week-long?) absence. Anyhoo, here's my almost-finished character sheet (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=292164). Originally going to be lawful evil (with a slow change toward chaotic good - don't know if he was ever going to get there, but whatevs), but, after talking with Nikose, decided to go with LN to start with. Starting out as a (really, really young, yet successful) worshiper of Bane, but looking for a switch to something less... pointless, in his mind. Something more constructive (he finds most of the good deities available locally to be either equally selfish and pointless, or flighty - a reason he still worships Bane, for power). I need only pick one spell (1st level enchantment or illusion I don't already have) and eleven languages. I might change my skills from speak language, however, to something else, as I have comprehend languages.

I specifcly call out Changes as I'll be using psionic stuff that you can't find in the Players Handbook.

I'm very good with it happening on Mondays. Note, however, that I can't reliably make it to a computer before 6 EST, and it's very rare that I can make it before 5 EST.

EDIT: the time-listed above is for two weeks, and only two weeks. By week three (May 23rd) I'll be rather free for anything. What I do not want is to be "the guy" that holds you all up, however. I want in, but I'm not putting myself above the rest of you, if the time is otherwise solid.

Didn't quite finish before I had to stop but I'm fairly pleased so far with all things Arianna, even though there's a fair deal of overlap with Suggestion / Enchantment spells between her and Tactics' character (but Tactics doesn't have Dominate Person or Baleful Polymorph so HAH.) Overall she has more offensive-oriented magic and is kind of like a draconic Black Mage who can also manipulate you into making her a sandwich.

The new character build forced me to go Chaotic Neutral with her (kind of hard to otherwise justify her messing with people's minds) which is probably more appropriate for a self-centered and immature fifteen year old girl anyway. I guess her desire to "do good" is being counterbalanced by the temptations of her green dragon heritage and her youth, or that's how I imagine it. Absolute power corrupts.

Have not yet done equipment (which might change things a fair deal) or magic spells/day, but everything else is chosen.

An impeccable variety of destructive magic with a slight emphasis on acid but versatility there (cold, lightning, fire, she's got the works) + the ability to toy around with people like they were her playthings due to green dragon style duplicitous / seductive / charismatic shenanigans was pretty much the vibe I was going for. If I succeeded in my build she'll be a feisty, playful little bundle of awe-inspiring power. If I failed then Nikose will kill her off early. ;)

...And with that it's back to exams for me!

... actually my character STILL doesn't know who you are, just that he tried to be nice and charming to her (as she was taking control of an inn) and that went okay until she had a temper tantrum?

Also, on a related note: I succeeded on exactly one skill check! Huzzah! I have now officially done something more than look suspiciously at something happening! And it only took three sessions! :D

Slightly more of a summary:
A man named Ezekiel had his entire family killed by a church of Lathander because of their lycanthrope. While three out of we four were in town for our own reasons (the last showing up unexpectedly to all), we have become involved (-ish, it depends on who you ask) in this entire debacle.

We have so far discovered that:
1) Ezekiel is kind of a stand-up guy, from what I can tell - we've never met him, that I know, but in a fit of rage, despair, and hatred of the people that killed his family he... used an illusion to smash a few windows, chairs, and a door. A-yyyyyyyyyyhep. Thus is the wrath of Ezekiel. This illusion was destroyed/dissipated by Arianna, who was accidentally teleported into said area through no fault of her own, and has been whining about it ever since.
2) The Lathanderites hate lycanthropes passionately, going so far as to (after killing the family) seed the man's former apartments with silver shavings... LOTS of silver shavings.
3) the Lathanderites a] don't want anyone to investigate too much and b] have the local cops in-pocket (at least partially)... we know this because a local spellguard blew up the building (while trying to maintain a facade of innocence) and then proceeded to use the most destructive ice spells he could to destroy said building while 'putting out the fire'. In retrospect, it might have been because they thought the person who'd come to the scene was Ezekiel, instead of just 'innocent' bystanders... but whatever. The important note was that said guard had the symbol of Lathander as his obligation token (each chooses a personal token to signify they're a guard and to gain access to special abilities). We now have said token.
4) Arianna's... not a very personable person despite having a huge amount of charisma. She and Caroline (another member of the party who was at the church, not the apartments) talked, made a good relationship, which was then spoiled by Carolina talking to... *gasp*... men. So now Arianna hates us, I don't know why, none of us save Caroline have any idea who she is, and we're trying to rent a room at the inn to discuss things in private. It's gone... poorly.
5) A mysterious stranger named Nikose Tyris has just shown up, offering ([up to?] one of/all of?) us a method of rapid (if not instantaneous) transport around the world. We may or may not be using it now... we probably won't, but, you know.

EDIT: I'd just like to point out that while none of our characters have a terribly strong bond together (yet - they've all basically met today), they're all ready and willing to work together... save for one.

Cliché is cliché for a reason! That said, it's not so terrible, so long as we do, eventually, get to work together. Otherwise the group won't... you know... be a group. If we aren't together, well... we're a bunch of individuals who completely leave off on our own, and there's no game together, and likely no story, as no GM that I know would be interested in giving a bunch of people individual games in the same game world at the same time. It's rough enough when the party splits, much less when the party... isn't! I've run games similar to that, and it's a chore: both for the players and for the GM. Inter-character conflict isn't an issue, so long as they work together, though. That's the main problem we're having now: finding any reason and/or way at all to work together!
E: and mostly, I'm just teasing Snake, at this point! :P ;)

ANYway, I think, in character, we can make this all work out. That's what I'm hoping at least!

Hey, it was pretty fun for me, even after Arianna dominated my skill target. Then she had him insult Ian. Then I put a plan in motion. The exchange between the dominated Innkeeper and Ian pretty much went like this:

Arianna instructs Innkeeper to insult Ian, thus he does.
Ian looks at the man bewildered, "What in the seven suns are you talking about, man? She meant that bloke over there." He points to some random stranger outside." Innkeeper looks confused for a second, then hops over the desk and runs out the door to give the man a piece of his mind. Ian roars with laughter and gives Arianna a stage bow while she looks a little surprised and pretty mad. Then he shuts the door and takes a seat with a smug look on his face.

Didn't break the dominate, but that natural 20 sure hit the spot. Ian, the young man who has a silver tongue and calls himself a dashing scoundrel and does just plain dashes from trouble.

Well, you don't have your money listed and I'm too tired to look it up now, but:

... a) gauntlets of ogre strength or b) belt of giant strength (+2) should give you the strength boost you need (but not both - they don't stack)

... if you have enough money, enchant that puppy (the axe) as that'll do HUGE amounts for you (+1 to attack and damage are actually very significant, plus it overcomes a ton of damage reduction)

... mundane stuff should include rations (or a Ring of Sustenance so you don't need 'em), a decent backpack (masterwork preferred for a fake +1 to STR for carrying capacity only), a decent bedroll, and a flint-and-steel (to keep your axe sharp and to look intimidating).

... full plate is not a good idea with your dexterity. You'll want to look into chainmail*, scalemail*, a breastplate*, or something similar to maximize your dexterity benefit; this is not min/maxing or munchkining (I don't know how it's spelled) or whatever: you're character is actually quite intelligent and quite experienced; thus can be reasonably assumed to have not only had the chance to try out various armor types, but to discover that he fights best in somewhat lighter-than-full-plate armor. If you really want full plate for character archetype/appearance reasons (a completely valid choice), make it a mithril full plate, if you can afford it, as this will open up your max DEX quite high.

This is just stuff that comes to me off the top of my head. I don't have the time, energy, or inclination to look it up for you now, but I'd be glad to help you out more later. If you want to talk on WLM (Windows Live Messenger) I'd be glad to (PM me your name, if you want). I'll be busy tomorrow, and probably not available until later, but I'll almost certainly be available Thursday. If not, no worries. I'll probably look into this more Thursday, unless someone wants to do it form me! :D

*I don't know the max DEX modifiers on these things off the top of my head, I'm just going off the first things that come to mind, and I believe these are all fairly similar.

Check 'Armor for Unusal Creatures', that should cover the armor portion of your request. As an example, I think that Plate Mail for a hydra would cost 12000 gp by RAW. The rest? I'm willing to bet that there aren't an rules for that, but I could be wrong.

If we're going with a classic hydra, buying armour for it will be nothing but a money sink.
All those new heads will need new helmets (or helmet-like armour) and, perhaps, plate or chain for the neck.

Better off leaving it un-armoured so it doesn't get bogged down with weight.
The mounting platforms is an awesome idea, though.

Thats a fair point, we're currently running a Hydra Tank Prototype that doesn't have platforms, but does have armor. It is a skeleton, however, causing it to lose its gigantic natural armor bonus. Hydra Tank Mk II will have platforms instead of armor and be a zombie, permitting it to keep its natural armor and I think even increasing it a little, along with a larger hp pool to simply make it an all around much better undead war machine.

Also apparently that hydra was supposed to kill us so the fact that we're now using it to kill everything else meant to kill us made the DM cry just a little.

To give you a heads up on any 'updates' there really haven't been any. You haven't missed any game stuff at all. Besides Ald joining ours, that's all. We couldn't play on Monday because Nik had some CPU stuff to take care of and that was the second time. If you remember, the first time was due to the fact he completely forgot about the game. So, you're not missing anything, but I hope you have fun on Monday with your RL friends.

Also, since the high chance is that you won't be here, when the game is over, I'll post an update here in the thread for you to look at when you get back.

Okay, so the situation with my girlfriend has evolved a little bit. She's going to be having sessions with a psychiatrist that will likely most often be on Wednesdays. She feels extremely insecure about going by herself and feels that it would be easier for her to be open and honest etc. if I was there, so I'll be attending those meetings with her.

Unrelated: everyone should play Dawn of Worlds, at least once. It's a free PnP world-builder game in which an unlimited number of players take on rolls of undefined "gods" who work together, or not, to create, destroy, build, tear asunder, etc, a world from the ground up, including creating races, waging war, altering the terrain, and the like. It's really fun. The end-game purpose is to have a new game-world, like a campaign setting, that everyone knows equally well ('cause they all made it). Alternatively... you can just play the game. Good times, so far. Full disclosure: I'm still in my first game, in the beginning of the third (and final) age. I'm playing an (effectively) lawful good earth goddess (the personification of the world itself) and a (effectively) true neutral god of division, testing, and deep places; my wife is playing a (neutral) good sun goddess, and an (effectively) chaotic neutral trickster god of the sea, wine, and revelry. So far nobody trusts my neutral guy - and with good reason! - as he's the only one that has created and corrupted a race of evil-ish things so far (although he's also created a race of more-or-less good things too, and purified one of his evil cities to neutral, so, you know...). Fun times.

Note: we played two each because it would be too slow to only do one each, as well as to give us a variety of sometimes conflicting alignments and the like. Normally, however, it's just one "god" per player.
