It's not so much Dwarf Fortress but a game looking similar hoping to cash in on the Dwarf Fortress cult popularity.

They could have at least called it Dwarves!? to sound less stupid.

This is an exquisite painting by Urist Bricksubtle. The painting depicts a dwarf. The dwarf is watching a trailer for Dwarfs?! on Steam. The dwarf is pondering the implications of such a blatant ripoff on the indie game market. The dwarf is crying.

This might be just the thing for those of us who want an intuitive interface and/or basically accessible graphics, though?

honestly I tried dwarf fortress but couldn't figure out what the hell I was looking at. Sure once you get used to it its like reading the code in The Matrix, but doesn't change the fact that to the rest of us its just a mess of indistinct sprites

Don't they have stuff that gives you dwarf fortress in non-ASCII graphics?

Yeah but the interface is still incredibly counter-intuitive on that version, which I think was the version I downloaded.
I probably should have realized I would be confused as hell when the game was recommended to me by a guy who spends his spare time programming Linux and coding and crap like that.

I admit that most of my hatred of Dwarfs?! comes from that god-awful, half-assed trailer you can watch in the Steam store.
Those fucking dancing gif dwarves. Oh my GOD. It's like every fucking internet pop-up EVER rolled into one.
THEY AREN'T EVEN DANCING TO THE MUSIC.
All that puts me into the mindset that Dwarfs?! is a half-assed cash-in on a well-loved internet phenomenon someone else made first for free.
(but oh god yeah Dwarf Fortress needs some interface work)

Yeah, those dancing dwarves looked horrible.

Not gonna comment on the Dwarf thing being a carbon copy or not, ain't played Dwarf Fortress enough to make that call.
But Tripwire Interactive makes awesome games, Killing Floor is one of my favorites of all time.

I dunno. Digging deep to find treasure seems less cool than digging deep to find 'fun'.

say that like the two are mutually exclusive

I thought Dwarf Fortress was mostly about digging deep to accidentally find high-pressure boiling water or steam or lava or spider-men that murder all your dwarfs.

Exactly. 'Fun'.

If magma furnaces are still in I imagine Magma still counts as both treasure and fun.

If I could ever figure out WTF is going on in Dwarf Fortress, I wouldn't be picking up this game.
