View Full Version : "Life In Rapture" or "What Do Splicers Do All Day?"
Think about it - in Super Mario, the Koopas have their own kingdom, they're just... at war? Are they at war? But they're regular peo... turt... potato... mush? They're regular folks, who're putting in a nine to five. In L4D, zombies are trying to kill you. Because you're food. In Thief, you're fighting guards and incarnations of an insane forest god or metal 'children' of a bonkers mechanic. We've got Metal Gear Solid, where there's just another army, we've got Call Of Duty where there's army and Civilization where army army army Nazis.
The weird thing about Rapture and the Splicers therin, is that they're all insane - a side effect of ADAM. They probably survive, for the most part, on potato chips, creme-filled cakes and wine, but they're armed psychopaths. How are there still survivors in Rapture when Player 1 finds his way there? (Survivors including Splicers, not just Tenenbaum and 'Atlas.') What's the heiarchy? Obviousl everyone is going after ADAM - they're all addicts - but are they still reasonably sane? Sure they seem sane, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liw6Xef3gHM) but they mutter to themselves, scream at imaginary people and raise their guns at the sight of strangers.
Little Sisters and Big Daddies play into the heiarchy somehow, but the question is what was life in Rapture like before the arrival of the player?

alot of them are either hold up somewhere or only encountered often because of constant respawning. If enemies didn't respawn you'd only run into a few dozen of them. Simple fact of the matter, most of Rapture is simply dead and only those at the top of the heirarchy would live much longer even if the player never appeared

everybody went into a crazy conflict where most of the commoners gained the ability to respawn shortly after death, and those that didn't were either killed or became tough enough to be considered a boss and/or become a big daddy.
And the little sisters are robots, ALL OF THEM.
So when you say respawn, do you mean like respawn respawn or Vita Chamber respawn - 'cause the Vita Chamber thing was designed pretty much for Ryan only.
Though... if they're designed for him to respawn why don't those against him destroy them?

1) they probably just dont know. Remember that was secretive information
2) do you really think roaming crack addicts are going to put the time and effort into destroying his magic immortality machine? which there are alot of? and dont really help him since he is nowhere near them? and its not full of adam?

Do you know what's going on in a crack addict's head? In a society of crack heads? Where the protectors of said crack are literally only interested in keeping the crack safe?

yes because its a crack addict, these aren't exactly complex individuals. They want more adam, if it doesn't get them more adam then they frankly dont care. All the factions with access to the stuff want those tubes working so no one will offer it for destroying them. There is simply nothing to be gained by destroying them.
Sure some were anyways from random violence, but remember how common they were and most of rapture was sealed off. Doubt you'd miss a few

I always just dismissed the Vita Chabers as part of the gameplay mechanic for most of the first game and never used them because it felt like cheating to me. Then they tried to shoehorn in an explaination about them being for Ryans private ressurrection uses, but made no effort to explain how the hell it worked or why the fuck he needs hundreds of the damn things everywhere.
And then somehow Delta can use them in the second game (I think, could Delta use Vita Chambers? Again I never used them so I can't quite remember) and made even less effort to explain that whole plot inconsistency.
Really the whole thing makes no sense and is best just ignored.
As for Splicers, I guess they just run around being insane and trying to track down ADAM, however they can. Admittedly there's probably varying levels of sanity, some people might be quite normal and well adjusted, certainly there are still a few normal people left in the city when Delta wakes up 10 years later, which begs the question why are they still stuck in that damn city of the dead?
And a more pressing question; if Splicers are all, by defination "spliced" and genetically modified, why do only a handful of them even have powers, when there are large amounts of plasmids out there with offensive capabilities that could aide them in aquiring yet more ADAM to feed their addiction?
Really the whole word of Rapture starts to make less sense the more you scrutinise it.

At that point you've already stopped caring and have continued your rampage with the chemical thrower.

Until the story explains how it happened very clearly and through direct narration of the event by Eleanor? I mean, I guess if you didn't bother to finish it you could have missed it, but it actually goes further to explain how Delta could use the chambers then the first did with Jack. You could easily put two-and-two together with Jack but the events around Delta's rebirth were a bit of a mystery up to that point.
I can understand missing a subtle point or clue, but when the lead female protagonist tells you directly as part of a story-controlled flash back I have to wonder.

I did finish the game (twice, in fact, I have the platinums for both games to prove it), I guess I just forgot about that being mentioned. It's still a ridiculous and pointless part of the games though.

Kinda off topic but relevant to first post: In L4D, I don't think the zombies have any intention of eating people. The comics made reference to people being bitten, as do a few lines of dialogue you occasionally get in Dead Center, but none of them actually seem interested in you as a snack. They just want to punch/kick/stomp on/claw/smash/throw cars at/puke on/ rip innards out of you and then leave your corpse on a sidewalk somewhere.
They're not hungry. They just hate you. You and your stupid, non-decomposing face.

What does the Brotherhood of Nod do between Tiberium Wars? Philanthropy, probably, but what kind?
I always saw them as bake sale type people.

They team up with the Brotherhoods of Winkin and Blinkin.

From what I remember, the splicers also spent their time between being promised drugs by the protagonists running the show(s) down in Rapture by hosting parties/hallucinating that they were hosting parties and amassing "fortunes" and claiming territory. And attempting to defeat Big Daddies to get at the girls and their Adam. Ostensibly they are so dependent on the drug that they have no desire to actually leave the one place where it is abundant.
That seemed to make sense to me.
If you want to feel bad for people, there're always the NPCs in MMOs/RPGs. They tend to stand in the same place all day and all night. Their poor families never get to see them so that they are there with little exclamation points and quests for you.

My theory is they are all under threat of their allying faction to stand there and give quests and behind their cheerful disposition is someone overcome with terror and dread. Those exclamation points are a warning. Run RUN BEFORE THEY GET YOU TOO

It's too late -- they've gotten to players already (http://www.wowhead.com/quest=28096).
