View Full Version : Delve into the Clockworks - A Spiral Knights Thread

So Spiral Knights is so awesome that it deserves its own thread. For those who don't know SK is now available on Steam and it is FREE! It's also like 500 MB so those of you with slow connections don't have to spend half a year downloading an awesome free game.
Also I figured there were enough of us already playing it to warrant a thread.
Plus in addition to all that I may have spent $5 to get 1600 energy so that I could get my 2* gear without having to wait several days to have enough energy and money to craft the stuff. With that said, I have ample energy left over and would be willing to start an NPF Guild. I just want to make sure you guys would be interested in that, since it would take 500 energy to make one.

there is two ways to get energy.
one is wait for myst energy to recharge wich takes 22 hours for every hundred
Second is to buy crystal energy with crowns or real money.

essentially
your ship crashed/was evacuated on this planet and they found this weird energy emanating from the core. the only way to fix the ship is to get this energy...however the planet is hollow and filled with clockworks these clockworks seem to span centuries of cultures and monsters.

It's a shame we can only do parties of 4, but still it's cool.
Does anyone know how energy is spent on elevators in a party? Is it based on each individual paying 10 for themselves, or does one person have to pay the 10 and everyone goes down?
I've been doing mostly solo adventuring just because (and I'm anti-social like that I guess) so I haven't noticed when I was in a party.

Everyone pays 10. If you join a party in the middle of a run, you pay 10 just to be at their floor.

To be honest, I think that once you get tier 2 clearance getting money for buying energy isn't going to be hard at all. I've been getting 3k with 100 energy and I don't even have tier 2 clearance.
Arcanum
06-16-2011, 08:57 PM
Perks include guild chat and a guild hall and the guild name under your character's name. I was only gonna make the guild if most/all of you were interested, but we can easily just use Steam chat to communicate.
Also Tier 2 depth is pretty tricky, at least soloing depth 9 took a bit of patience and two deaths.
Even then, from just plundering depths 1-8 I've already started earning back the energy I payed for. I was down to 1100ish (from 1600) and I'm back up to 1300 (bought energy twice today for ~3500). And that's running mostly off mist energy (you get another mist tank when you get tier 2 clearance).

Hmmm. A guild sounds kinda cool.
I've got Spiral Knights downloaded and my sister's played it, but I have yet to try it out because apparently when the phone company says they'll make sure my house has access to higher-speed internet within the next 48 hours, it really means that within 10 hours my internet will suddenly become so slow and unreliable that the wireless card loses the signal six times in less than an hour and Steam refuses to start up.
Assuming the internets pick up again, I'd love to explore some Clockwork lands with y'alls.
Also, it doesn't sound like many people are interested in Champions or Forsaken World, but I figure I'll eventually try 'em just because they're free. If anyone else ends up with Champions, we totally need to form an NPF Justice League for the hell of it.
Ryong
06-16-2011, 09:29 PM
Forsaken World I've played and, uh, it's terrible.
Like, you have to spend a LOT to get some of your stats up in order to be able to do anything later on and that means either you pay a LOT or you spend months doing the same quest over and over just to get money.

Ryong
06-16-2011, 09:43 PM
Heat: When someone picks it up, it is shared between everyone. Each piece of equipment uses heat to level up. New stuff starts at level 1 and you can't transfer heat. Also, weapons get a charge speed bonus at 5 and usually get something special at 10 - like my heavy hatchet got a chance to stun at level 10 with every attack.

Would be fun to try out playing with a few players, especially since the bomb weapon doesn't seem to be one that works well when suffering lots of aggro.

Actually, the bomb is pretty much perfect when you got a bunch of guys running you down, since you can lure them into the blast radius without worry. I'm getting the hang of explosives myself, but it's already better than the gun.

From what I've seen, it seems like gear of a whole star higher is so good that even a max-level item of the lesser rank isn't as good.
Doc ock rokc
06-18-2011, 01:45 PM
Lets put it this way. Two star gear at level 1 hits harder then 1 star gear at level 10. Essentrually when you go up a level in your gear then anything that was a challange will cease to be. My current 3 star gear absolutely destroys the lower levels most steams are on.

The auction house is pretty fun. It's alarming how frequently people put valuable things up for a starting bid of like one crown. Then other people notice and there's a little bidding war going on, but if you're lucky you can snag some sweet deals. I got 3 Blaze Peppers (four-star materials) for 79 crowns last night, for instance.
Right now it'd be awesome if I could get a Searing Sword on the cheap, but the Calibur works just fine and I like its charge attack. So I'm aiming for some sort of two-star Helm and Armor instead so I can move on to greener, more lucrative pastures.
Re: Below. I'm getting slightly tired of fighting Snarby, if only because I gradually come to realize the boss fight is either buggy as shit, or compensates poorly for lag.

Recipes are your friend, since buying the item you are usually paying the person recipe cost + material cost + energy cost + profit. However Recipes in the Auction House are at least double the regular price unless you get really lucky. Fortunately if you get down to Depth 4 there's a Traveling Merchant who sells 1* and 2* recipes, which randomize every day.
Is the 2 star equipment better? I have my stuff leveled up to like almost level 9, so I don't wanna get rid of it.
Once you equip an item it binds to you. Meaning it can't be traded or sold (except to NPC vendors for a tiny amount of crowns). Also, you sometimes need weapons for crafting. For example to get the 3* Tempered Calibur part of the crafting recipe is a level 5 heat (I think, don't quote me on the level) 2* Calibur.
What I recommend is going on the Wiki and looking at what armor/weapons you want so you don't waste crowns and energy crafting things you're gonna barely use.
Snarbolax etc.
Blocking is your best friend during that fight. And yeah the bell sometimes doesn't stun him, but he has a period of invulnerability when he's getting ready to attack (and I think that sometimes stretches into his attack, I might be wrong). But yeah, there are times where the bell simply doesn't stun him for no apparent reason, but so long as you're blocking when he's diving underground you should be good. Plus you can easily outrun his biting attacks.
Just got this early this morn. Interested in playing later. Skimming, 'cause 'M at work, but what's this about a private NPF thing?
In-game NPF Guild. I have the spare resources to make one so I figured "why the hell not?"
Oh and on a related note to recipes, I can make my way down to Depth 13 relatively easily now, which is where the Traveling Merchant sells 2*, 3*, and 4* recipes (also randomly generated). So if I see any recipes for stuff you guys want (Like a Cutter or a Searing edge) I'll pick it up and sell it to you at cost (plus a 500 crown shipping and handling fee).

Downloaded this last night because everyone I know is playing it. Since I'm woefully ignorant of the game however, how bad are the freemium features in it? I don't intend to spend a single penny on 'em, I'd just like to know if I'm screwed or not.
On the note of freemium features, did anyone ever play something called GunBound? Back in 05/06 or so I played it, since I was a teenager, liked Worms but hated the lack of multiplayer for it, and didn't know any better. Sweet Zombie Diety of Choice that game was bad for freemium features. Well, the game was bad in general but just about -everything- there you had to part with cash to get game-breaking advantages over opponents. Then they'd come out with more items that broke the game further over the original game-breaking stuff, so the suckers who orginally paid for equipment would be... suckered further. Luckily, since that game didn't like £ (or some other reason I can't recall), I never spent anything. Did a good job of deterring me from other freemium stuff, though.

The only thing I've seen money spent on is energy, and a few things that can help you start up. Energy is the resource that lets you do anything in the game.
Without paying money you're capped at 100 energy that recharges over a time (constant recharge for 100 energy over 24 Hr. period). You can trade 'crowns' the currency of the game for energy that is above the cap that you get to keep till you spend it, that costs ~3500 crowns for 100 energy.
Spending money only lets you progress faster. I haven't spent a dime yet because my life's going to get totally crazy over the next few weeks and I've been having a great time with it. Game seems to have a great balance between paying and non-paying players and doesn't feel broken at all.

I can't really pinpoint anything I don't like besides how equipment quality is somewhat unclear and that charge attacks are underpowered (6 damage normal pistol shot and 10 damage for a charged pistol shot doesn't seem worth walking through hallways with it charged like that.)Charge attacks vary between weapons. The Calibur, for instance, attacks everyone in a circle around you, with the additional caveat that it can hit multiple times if you backed enemies into a corner first so they don't get knocked flying by the first blow. There's also some variance in regular attacks for some weapons, so it's probably ideal for you to check the wiki before you make any weapon upgrades, and see what fits best for you.
But yeah, early guns and swords have very underwhelming charges.
Whew. Finally found a place that had enemies that dropped swordshards so I could forge a caliber. Nope. One click, half your current HP gone. That achievement is for when you have a single bar of health left and then use half of it to revive someone.

That's hardcore.
When you die you can sit there and wait to be revived by an ally, or you can spend 2 energy to revive (or you can pay the cost of all of your allies to revive everyone). That energy cost doubles with each following death. So second death would be 8 energy, third is 16, etc etc. However there is a third option where you can return to Haven at no cost. So if you use up all your mist energy reviving, you can just go back to haven. Oh and in Tier 2 it costs 5 energy to revive (which then doubles to 10, etc).
Yeah, but I've tried the right click and it wasn't working. What are the condition you need to be in?
If it drains your health then there's nothing more you can do. It's on the player to revive his/herself. If it's not draining your health then the player might have already been given health from someone else. If that's not the case then I dunno. Make sure you're right on top of them and not randomly right-clicking everywhere? Run around them in circles madly right-clicking? Here's some specifics on the mechanic. On that note though, Solo T1 runs are rather profitable, and much easier with 2* equipment. You can make anywhere from 3k to 4.5k depending on which levels you get. I have concluded that most of Tier 2, with the exception of arenas/danger rooms where it gets impossible to kill the healers as they get meat shielded too effectively, is -much- easier to solo.
I even got through a graveyard. You only get the same number of Phantoms as there are players. With >1 player, it's inevitable you'll get multiple Phantoms ganging up on the same person, which means they're usually dead. Just a singular one can be handled.
And I'm still only in 2* gear, but it's all Heat10 and I've reached the Emberlight depth a few times without revives. No new recipes there, so I'm hoping the Nightblade recipe eventually pops up on Basil at Depth 13.

That would go for a lot more in my opinion. At least 300k. The cutter line's charge attack is relatively useless in later tiers, since you're stuck standing still for a while and it doesn't have great knock-back. Compared to the Calibur, well, the spin attack is just plain awesome.
The only problem is that I looked into the Brandish, Cutter, and Calibur on the auction house before deciding which one to craft a bunch of. Cutter's go for at least 3k (which is what I sold mine at). Brandishes were cheaper, and caliburs even more so. (I'm mostly talking about the buy now price, which I put below every other buy now price to guarantee a sale as fast as possible.) Most of the time Brandishes and Caliburs, if you wanted a guaranteed sale, were being sold at a loss (i.e. below 2400CR). And of course none of this took into account material costs, since I had an ample amount of what was needed to craft cutters and burned through them without a care.

Thing is Brandish is cheap because its cheap to make but expensive to upgrade. and usually their upgrades are super specialized.
Caliburs are more expensive initially but have good cheap upgrades for each level (like I already can upgrade a calibur i just bought and I got it the other day. and If i had the energy I could upgrade to 4* in a snap.)

I've got a fancy scheme I was thinking of trying.
I could make an alt account through the website, and log onto that while Krayzin is logged on through Steam and such. I make a group with the alt, clear my way to a depth 5-7 arena (that I can clear easily but still gives a good payout). I then have the alt choose the 'go solo' option, which puts Krayzin onto the arena floor seperately. I clear it, I get good money.
I then exit out, and have the alt reinvite Krayzin back to the arena floor. Then go solo and clear again. Rinse and repeat.
The issue is that this feels a little rule-bendy, but I can't see anything in the Terms of Service/Code of Conduct that would prohibit such a thing. You're allowed 3 accounts per PC (yes, accounts - not just characters), after all. And a few other people I know have been doing it.

Pretty much. The alt is just there to invite, go solo, then do nothing while the main gets to work. Also, I'm pretty sure it's fine to multibox anyway, Flare, which MMOs like WoW generally allow.
Leaving the character completely idle doesn't work though, since you get booted after ~15 minutes of inactivity. Something that's gotten to me a few times already when I'm cooking or whatnot. Plus the other character needs to reinvite and choose the go solo option.

Of course, but I think spending 10 energy per arena for a 2k+ payout is much better than going through every floor. And it has to be a Stratum 2/4 arena since they payout much better. But a Stratum 4 arena would have Tier 3 nasties.

Question: I think I saw somewhere in this thread that a fully EXP'd piece of gear can be used as a crafting ingredient.
Is this true, and if so, what for?4* and 5* equipment needs to be Lv5 before they can be used in Alchemy. Otherwise the level of the equipment makes no impact whatsoever.
[edit] On an unrelated note, the music on the Character Select screen gets pretty nice if you let it run long enough.

A little more clarification: When crafting the 4* variant of a weapon/armor, for example a Silent Nightblade (4* sword), you need the 3* variant (in this case a regular Nightblade) at level 5 heat as part of the crafting requirements. And again when crafting a 5* item you need the 4* variant at level 10 heat (so with the current example you need a Silent Nightblade at level 10 heat, as well as all other crafting materials, energy, and crowns, to create an Acheron).

Ah, so there's no point in getting full heat on my starting gear if I can already craft better gear, except for shiggles.
Good to know!

Ok, just as an offer I have a recipe for a Twisted Targe (the 3* upgrade for the Snarbolax shield) which I was going to put up for auction. But, if anyone wants it I'd be willing to give it to them for the sold price of 4k crowns.
Just reply before tomorrow morning and I'll hold onto it if I need to.
