Is this one of those series where I should just skip the first one and go onto the sequels? For instance, I recently got into The Elder Scrolls and quickly realized I might as well just go ahead and just start to play Morrowind because, well, it's where the series really got "good" and indicative of the series as a whole.

So anyway, question is: should I play Thief 1 and Hitman 1? Or just move onto the second, most often-touted games in those series?

Play Hitman, skip Thief.

Skip Hitman, Play Contracts. It's pretty much a remake.

Play Theif 1. Just because it is the original. Nothing like giving originals some life.

Thief 1 is a lot of fun, even though it took me like two hours to get it to work (had to download a special patch). It reminds me a lot of another game I own, Arx Fatalis, but without the RPG elements. In Thief you just have a sword and a bow and a set amount of energy as opposed to gaining levels. Hiding in the shadows and running around in various corridors/caves is very similar to Arx Fatalis, though. I'd call it "Arx Fatalis Lite".

As for Hitman, the collection I bought only had Hitman 2-4 in it, I just wasn't sure if should try to hunt down the first one. However, in looking at it online it seems like Contracts basically takes the best parts of it and remakes them, so I don't think I'll go out of my way to play Hitman 1.

I haven't played the other Thief games, but the first was excellent. I lost my old copy though.

Thief always made Pyros a happy camper, and I'll admit I'm actually quite crappy at this whole "stealth" thing, so it's a good play.

You should go by character: Thief's Garret is a master thief, who steals to live and because everyone else fails to protect their belongings from him, who doesn't give a crap about all this mystic hoodoo or ancient societies, but is so skilled and determined that even the gods that overlook the setting are wary of him. Has an AWESOME voice.

Hitman: Agent 47: Bald. Genetically Engineered. Controls poorly. BLAND. Kills people.

I dunno, Garret's kind of helped by the utter incompetence of his foes. For instance, an assassin shoots into the store he's in--directly at the shopkeeper clearly standing behind a counter, killing him. The assassin then remarks to his friend, "Surely Garrett is dead, for there would never be two people within a store. Let's return to yon manse and drink yon ale." (paraphrase)

Hitman 1 is hilariously dated. It is more of a pain in the ass to play these days.

Skip to 2, or hell if you can only play one, Blood money is the best one.

As for thief....well I never played the games, a rarity for me I assure you, but as far as I know it is still fine, although 2 is far better from what I understand. 3 is meh.

Hitman's enemies are only so much more intelligent in that once they hear that there's a bald man in a suit murdering people, they'll stop at nothing to find him and kill him, including having a degree of omniscience in knowing where he is and having unlimited ammo.

But they have absolutely no f'king clue about that bald guy in overalls walking around.
