I don't know if anyone has seen this yet, but Freddy Kruger is a character in Mortal Kombat via DLC.

...Why?

Are they trying to cash in on the popularity of his last movie? What popularity? His last movie sucked! (http://www.nuklearforums.com/showthread.php?t=39473&) (The only good ones are the original and Dream Warriors.) B est case scenario, this passes under the radar. Worst case scenario, we get Freddy Versus Jason: The Movie: The Game.

Why would they do this? It's not like Mortal Kombat Vs. DC, where you have two separate entities with a wide array of colorful characters, you're just schlepping things in for the hell of it. Is this going to be the new Smash Brothers, just adding someone new in to the MK line up? Coming soon: Jack Nicholson from the Shining! Thomas The Tank Engine! Fucking Fluttershy!

But seriously, yeah, this really is just an obvious cash-in. That said, I'm not sure what the outrage is all about. It's really no worse than Kratos, Darth Vader, and Yoda appearing in the latest Soul Calibur games.

Kratos fit. Vader and Yoda just... didn't.

Maybe he can have a power where you put in an attack combo and he holds up his glove and then he stops and looks towards the screen and jumps the fuck out of your and fucking murders you right there while you're playing the game holy fuck there goes any chance of me playing mortal kombat ever again.

well, now. Of all the Cash ins they could do, Freddy at least lives in the Realm of possibility that CAN overlap what Mortal Kombar is.... it's much better than a Star Wars character in Soul Calibur, no doubt.

I'm more peeved that MK9 has been used as a cash cow, mooching off fans' nostalgia. Given that the base game is $60, plus the stupid ten dollar fee if you bought it used, then the extra money for either the collector version or the one with the fight stick, THEN you add to that that you will pay $15-$20 for all DLC (the costumes, which were on the disc and stuff, plus either the season pass/bundle or buying each DLC at five bucks a pop)...yeah, this game is a money magnet.

Don't get me wrong, it's fun as hell, but still skeevy regarding the cash grab tactics.

To me it seems more like Freddy Kroger is trying to cash in on MK9.

I don't think we can fault MK9 for a Collector's Edition, because everyone with any weight to their name is doing that these days.

I really wished one of the ME Collector's Editions had come with a wearable Omni-Tool thing.

Considering waht the rest of the fighting game industry (read Capcom) is doing -ie releasing all their patches as a new game that you have to rebuy- the fact that MK9 is getting regular free gameplay patches is pretty much anti this.
And like you don't have to buy the collectors edition or the DLC unlike say Street Fighter or MvC where you need to buy the whole new game basically to play.

My argument is -- and always has been -- that making people pay for characters as DLC divides the players into haves and have-nots and splits the fanbase. $5 a character is also pricy. Granted, I gave in and bought the damned season pass, but it's still REALLY a $75 game.

The one concession I'll make is that at least the compatibility packs make it so if both players don't have the DLC, neither gets to use the character, which is fair.

And at least it's not like BlazBlue CS, which I officially gave up on shortly after hearing the DLC shenanigans on that game.

A: Midway is dead. This is Neatherrealm Studios, which is a dev branch owned by Warner Bros. Games exclusively to make Mortal Kombat.

B: MK9's DLC is doing DLC about 1000x better then most.
Do I need to mention Call of Duty 15 dollar map packs.
Do I even need to remind you all that Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is a thing?
I have no idea why people are just now bitching and moaning at MK when DLC like this has been done, and done WORST.

As for Freddie being in MK...MK is all about crazy nonsense so this seems normal to me. I have not got around to playing it again, so I don't even care about the DLC characters.

EDIT: OOOOOOOOOOOO I got one more, World of Warcraft's PONY OF THE COSMOS a re-skin of a mount already in game for only 25 dollars!

No.

He has a move where he stares into your soul but nothing happens until later when you go to bed. You then have a dream wherein you are playing Mortal Kombat, exactly as you had been the day before, but just as Deja Vu sets in, that's when he pulls himself out of the television set, your dreamscape transforming into a hellish rendition of a Mortal Kombat battlefield. Above your head a pair of health bars appear with a timer between them. You have only a sliver of health while Freddy has multiple health bars.

I've never watched Freddy or know any of the lore but, do you have any control over your dreams or is he in pretty much 100% control in there?

Magus

If I remember correctly they eventually figured out that the dreamer could also manipulate the dreams to battle him.

The only movie I watched had some boy tried that but it was just Krueger giving him some false hope

Depends on the movie and the dreamer. I think the only way to beat him by controlling your dreams is to use it to draw him into the real world and then he's just some dude with crazy gloves and a burned up face and welp.

Final Nightmare. Yep.

There's only 4 movies to that series. The rest of them is fake Freddy. This includes the new one. It's fake. Period.

Yeah, there's only tw... wait. Four movies? What? I hope you're counting the original with Heather Langenkamp and the third with Heather Langenkamp twice. Because everything else was pretty shite.

That being said, it's established cannon that you've got some leeway. The original had Nancy burn her hand on a pipe in Krugers boiler room to wake herself up. As the series progressed - especially in Dream Warriors, it was shown that most people have a "dream power." or at least some sort of "persona." They then use these to fight back. However, Freddy is near immortal in the dream world and feeds of the fear of his victims. So the most you could really do is fight back for a while, and either pull him out in the real world or have someone bury his remains on consecrated ground.

Anything by Wes Craven. That's the only thing I'm counting.

Wikipedia only gives him writing credit for the characters which is pretty much not really a credit at all. Screenplay (the most important bit) and the story were written by other people. That barely counts.

There. fixed that post.
DLC is always optional. Buying the game used is optional.
The collector's edition is optional.

MK 9 is really just a $60 game.
I'll grant you the 20 bucks for DLC, though. Make it 80 then.

Check out Ace Combat 6 if you want to see a real money grab, by the way.

Also, proof the costumes were on-disc?
I see people moaning how the DLC obviously was on the disc (for any game), but when asked for proof, it's always a vague, barely heard mumble of "download sizes" or "obviously it was". I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if it were on-disc (reasons ranging from: "characters weren't completely done during normal development cycle so they finished it as DLC" to an actual money grab), but most of the time it's just people being annoying/ignorant about DLC.

Mind you, I don't care either way. Just curious if it's actually on-disc.

Professor Smarmiarty

Man if I made a game I would make it then take like half of it off the disc and sell it as DLC. It's not on-disk so that makes it ok right?

Whoops.
I completely forgot about that.

Yeah, that's pretty much a fatality. (the scary part, I have at least 90% of the Railworks DLC available on Steam. It "only" cost me €200, though. Gotta love those sales.)

EDIT: Also, have fun and try to add all that.
Steam doesn't like it for me, at least. It throws out a silly error. =D

One of the Challenge Tower matches is Klassic Sub-Zero vs Klassic Scorpion.
There are 4 secret battles in the game (a call back to the ones in MK1-3).

Reptile's has him in his Klassic costume using the moves he had in MK, but since the costumes are just re-colors thrown onto a skin it's still the one you "buy".

Smoke's has him in the uncolored (grey) klassic costume.

Noob Saibot's has him in a pitch black version of the costume.

Then Jade's has her in her MK3 costume.

I think it's safe to say they were on the disc.

On-topic:
I was disappointed by Freddy too until I saw his trailer and realized he fits in well in the MK world. Especially if an action star, 2 special ops, and a cop do.
