View Full Version : DmC had me and then it lost me
I will be perfectly honest and say I've never really been super excited for Ninja Theory's take on the Devil May Cry franchise. They do some stuff really well, but none of it is really the stuff I like about the DMC games. That and there was stuff floating around that painted them as really dismissive towards the original games and their fans and about how they wanted to make the DMC games less "Japanese," which also bugs me for a number of reasons I won't get into at the moment. I still figured it would be a good game, just not a good game in the ways I wanted it to be.
So, today this trailer went up. (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/08/the-whole-world-turns-against-dante-in-dmc/)
I'm watching it, and I'm finally in. This looks fun. It's bright, colorful, imaginative, and fast-paced. Begrudgingly, I admit that this looks pretty good.
UNTIL the end, when we see what seems to be some ghost chick or a lady in another world or something. At that point, we get the following exchange:
"Dante! It's chaos out here! But I found a way out!"
"Where?"
"There! I marked it!"
Already we have a character whose roles in the game I expect will be relegated to, "This is how you use this ability, Dante!" and "Your next objective is the factor on the edge of town, Dante!" and "You've gotta help rescue me, Dante!" Not exactly something I'm looking for and the dialogue just doesn't seem to work. So that killed my interest.
FAKE-EDIT: Someone linked me another trailer.
0EWn9ZQu_yE
Combat looks good, though something about it looks off in a way I can't name. I'm still really not liking the dialogue or Dante's friend.
Also, someone pointed out that the eye gates may mean we end up saddled with forced stealth segments. I'm hoping not, but that could very well end up happening.
I admit I'm biased, but this still just bugs the hell out of me.

If it makes you feel any better, you are not the only one who hates this new direction. It screams what we like to call "we had a different idea for a game, but slapping a franchise name on it will get more money, so we shoehorned the usual trademarks of the franchise in." See the also WTF-inducing Brothers in Arms: Furious 4.

Yeah no. Not buying this, then.

Yeah no. Not buying this, then.
first and foremost we don't even know if there is any stealth segments.
I kind of wish that they do this in another series in a way or just gave it its own series. Because I really like the "World against you" thing. I like it and all other types of games that do the same but I really think that lumping it with Devil May cry I have been in the dumbest idea that they thought of.
it looks like a rather good game on its own. Something that could stand on its own as a action packed silent Hill kind of game. But it definitely doesn't have the ham factor that Devil May cry is known for.
Oh, so I finally figured out what was bugging me about the combat in that DmC trailer. Everything about it looks easy. It looks like it's really early in the game, so that could be why, but even so it doesn't seem hard. Like, Dante just floats in the air and juggles his enemies and nothing about it looks threatening or intimidating. He just blows through them like it ain't even a thing.
Rewatching and goddamn why does this game take itself so seriously.
"I found the camera locations for this area..." Oh fuck you, I hate those repetitive diversions.

OP trailer made it look like it could have been a pretty fun game, too bad they had to ruin it by getting rid of dante and putting in this new asshole I don't give a shit about cause he plainly isn't dante.

The DMC series as a whole is kind of a testament to how even a decent sane forms of evil like greed is is ultimately helpless before the power of sheer brainless shitfucking ego.
I'm really torn here because EHHHHHHH this reboot looks shitty. The world looks pretty cool and I like the design and stuff, but Dante looks like a punk-rocker douchebag instead of an over-the-top ridiculous demon cowboy rock star thing which I've always enjoyed. And the ghost lady thing seems somewhat interesting but her and 'Dante's interactions seem crappy and forced and Dante should never just like have chill boring-ass movie-script conversations with anyone.
'Go, save yourself' PTTTTTHHHHHHBT.
On the OTHER hand, goddamn does that look like some fun combat and that transforming sword thing looks fucking awesome. But as Liz said it looks easy as piss. What I loved about DMC was that it was hard as fuck. The problem on the lower difficulties was always that the enemies just kind of stare at you half the time. So what this needs, and its very likely, unless this game will just be total shit, there'll be way more enemies and they'll do a lot more moving around and attacking. I hope.
I'm really just confused about why they felt the need to redesign Dante. Because they ran out of room on his timeline I guess and they already did the 'younger and even cockier' version?
Also did anyone else notice Dante appears to have an english flag stitched on his sleeve? The hell?

TDK, I never noticed it to be honest.
I'm kind of mixed about this game. I wanna play it but I don't want to really accept this as another DMC game.
Aw well at least the game play looks great and the worlds are pretty.

Hey, I know what's the deal I have with the combat: The GET OVER HERE chain reminds me of God of War, in that your melee weapon has a fuckton of range or you can instantly get into the range of a stronger weapon whenever you want, without having to throw yourself in the middle of a bunch of enemies.
Clearly what needs to happen is that this guy meets up somehow with actual Dante - or this continuity's Vergil - who proceeds to berate him and beat him to a pulp and then take over the game.
So, just like DMC4.

DMC4 would have been actually good if it were Nero OR Dante all the way through, or you'd at least have the option to do so after beating it once.
As for this? Yeah, I was sceptic but still had hope they could pull it off. Doesn't look like it.

Remember how DMC started out as a Resident Evil game until they noticed it was going in a air-juggling with bullets direction and made it a different game, that didn't have anything to do with Resident Evil?
On reflection that may have been the last original game Capcom made. And maybe it will be.
Oh, that reminds me. DMC 4 was shit. Not even just like because of Nero and all that shit. Well, okay, it is mostly because of Nero. But the game, in addition to being easy as fuck was just so...cartoony. It was like an anime. And not in a good way. That's exactly the problem with Nero, he was a straight up goddamned anime character. Angsty, overemotional, spontaneously becoming absurdly powerful when required by the plot. (I mean, the final cutscene just fucking epitomizes everything wrong with him. He hovers in the area randomly for like ten minutes, does the giant ridiculous hand crusher move and shouts the worst goddamn overdramatic bullshit which doesn't even make any goddamn sense. Ugh.) Visually, too, the game was too cartoony. It was much brighter and less imposing, visually, than the previous games.
So in that regard at least, this game looks to be superior. Though not in the dialogue and over-drama-no-one-cares-about category. But fuck, I'll take what I can get.

When this game was first announced this was honestly my first thought.
Like, my theory - which makes that first announcement trailer make way more sense - is that new!Dante isn't actually Dante. He's just some other dude who was mindfucked until he BELIEVED he was Dante.
At the end of the first trailer, he's tied up or something, and you hear some mysterious voice go "for the last time what is your name" or something. Then, the kid goes "My name... Is DANTE." That isn't him being defiant. It's the bad guy winning.
The way that the world keeps changing schizophrenically is literally a hint to indicate that he's not alright in the head.
I hope and expect that the real Dante will eventually show up and kick his ass or something, and then become an *optional* playable character.

See, this is why I played DMC3, loved it, played DMC4 and then no, fuck this shit, this is DMC3 without all the awesome.
Like, even gameplay-wise it was a sidegrade, less variety in weapons but you can change styles at any time.

I would much prefer this to be the case than what it appears to be (that this is actually Dante, redesigned to look like the lead creator of the game). I doubt it will be though, especially considering the shit the makers have been coming out with about this game, which is what most pisses me off about the whole thing.
They even came out at one point and said that everyone who was bashing the game was actually just being a troll and secretly really wants to play it. Erm, no, you've ruined the main character from the series and made him look like yourself you pretension douche, fuck off. That and you're trying to insert another prequel into a series that doesn't need it, and fucking up the continuity along the way. This game is only going to be considered dis-canon alongside DMC2, and good riddance.

Of course, they could, themselves, be trolling. Or maybe they're trying to keep the HUGE TWIST under wraps by pretending it isn't there at all. It's what I would do.

TDK... did you even play the original Devil May Cry? Go back and play through the last segment of the game.
Powers as the plot demands? Check.
Overdramatic bullshit lines? (FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!) Check.
I will mark Dante from DMC1 to be far less angsty, overemotional, and the game was pretty damn dark, so points for that. But Powers As The Plot Demands and over the top hammy lines that don't make sense are series staples.
What was Nero supposed to be, anyway, a carbon-copy Dante or Virgil? Or were we supposed to play as Dante the whole game? I rather like the switch-up, exploring a different playstyle can be interesting from time to time.
But that's an argument for another thread, I'm off topic enough as it is.
As far as DmC goes? This should be its own original IP. And it would work. Hell, it might even be GOOD. But slapping the DMC name on it to get buzz and interest all in the name of maybe a little more sales right off the bat? Shit move. Totally shit move. And Tameem photoshopping his head on Dante's body was also a pretty shit move. If he wanted to star in his own fucking game he should've just done Temeem May (And Probably Will) Cry.
I also noticed the God of War-esque approach to combat and immediately got fifty times more irate. Take a game that inspired God of War and... make it more like God of War. Wow, step fucking backwards there. Nevermind the rumors going around that the framerate has been cut in half and they can't handle more than a handful of enemies onscreen at once. It's like they're trying to make DmC Babby's First Hack'n'slash.
We're all pretty agreed that we like DMC because it is harsh and unforgiving and only by displaying the flyest of moves and sickest combos with great skill can we succeed... and look damn cool doing it.
Whatever happens with DmC... Capcom better pull its head out of its ass and give us a proper DMC entry at some later point in the series. Because if we're stuck with "the adventures of Tameem in Limbo-Mindfuck-World" for the rest of this IP's lifespan I'm just gonna completely ignore Capcom forever.

Like it's amazing because literally all Capcom had to do is just keep making DMC1 over and over again with minor variations forever and I basically would have bought all of them.
Like what the fuck has the world come to when you can't rely on goddamn Capcom to take a gold-plated money-press formula and not fuck it up again and again and again.
...The dumbest part is that sudden spate of inexplicable sanity where all of a sudden they got it right again in DMC3 and then proceeded directly back to their chosen path of fucking up.

...The dumbest part is that sudden spate of inexplicable sanity where all of a sudden they got it right again in DMC3 and then proceeded directly back to their chosen path of fucking up. Yeah I was kind of hoping Capcom would continue along its earlier pattern of the the odd-numbered DMC games being awesome and the even-numbered ones being crappy, that way I would know which ones to bother looking at. But NEW!Dante appears to be breakin' Capcom's combo.
Powers as the plot demands? Check.
Overdramatic bullshit lines? (FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!) Check. And yet somehow it was still awesome.
Granted, DMC3 had HORRIBLE voice acting and lines, yet was also amazing. Capcom, why do you do these things?!
Okay I guess I supressed that memory from DMC1 because it was terrible. DMC1 WAS kind of overdramatic at times. Honestly when I think DMC I think DMC 3 because it was fucking awesome all over the place. DMC 1 was awesome too, just I liked 3 better personally. I do think 1 had better atmosphere, though. And it was harder.
(Also Dante isn't FUCKING TERRIBLE like Nero so him being overdramatic is much more tolerable.)
DMC1 was great but it has problems. DMC3 is the best.

We do not talk about 2.
I actually quite enjoyed DMC 2. It was also my introduction to the series (I had the kind of parents who would just get you something randomly from the middle of a series for christmas or whatever. like OH HEY HERE'S BOOK FIVE OUT OF A SERIES YOU'VE NEVER READ.). It was pretty stylish, the atmosphere was pretty nifty, the wall running and combat and stuff was all pretty legit, but some of the enemy design was shitty, and the story was ehhh. The main HUGE ASS issue was that it was way too goddamned easy.

4 was my first game in the series, and I really liked it. It would have been better if they hadn't forced you to run through the entire game again backward, but Nero isn't THAT annoying.
Well, okay, I'll admit I paid little to no attention to the cutscenes. My point is that it was cool to have access to two characters with completely different styles. I want to see more of that.

I started with 1, played 2, Enjoyed the hell out of 3, and owned 4.
I currently own games 1, 3, 3 Special Edition, and 4.
1 is an excellent game that has it's own minor issues but I still love it.
2's story actually hurts to think about.
3 is my favorite which is like saying "Man Chocolate is my favorite brown thing to eat" in a series like this.
4 had some big issues but I can appreciate what they tried with it and at least they gave us Dante half way through.
I really wish DmC was that theory I read on here, that it's just some loonytunes Devil Hunter that got brainwashed into thinking he was Dante, in order to make him hunt down and kill Dante. But we know that ain't happening.

Who the fuck cares about story in DMC games?
The only thing worse than giving a shit about story in a game like DMC is a tutorial lady of some sorts. Or any tutorial beyond press buttons to fuck shit up. In fact I think "This door has a cucumber shaped key-hole, find a cucumber to open this door or just slap it with your monstrous dick" is all I need of a game that is essentially a closet Resident Evil parody.
I hope this game bombs. Unless it changes a lot until it's released, which I highly doubt. When I hear you people saying this seems more like god of war I can't really think of anything else than my thoughts from when I played God of War: "Man, I wish I was playing DMC instead". Because God of War is pretty boring, but I may be alone with that opinion because apparently some think it's genuinely good.
